Fujifilm X100V Sales Jump at Map Camera to #1 For March 2020

Fujifilm is one of the few companies growing during these troubled times and they are even making an effort to help the creative community survive COVID-19, which couldn’t be at a worse time for the company with the Fujifilm X-T4 coming. Yet even with COVID-19 the Fujifilm X100V has managed to jump to the number one spot at map camera after the Fujifilm X-Pro3 did the same thing.

Digicame-info points out that Fujifilm managed to prevent the Nikon Z50, which has been selling well, from rising back into the top spot. The Fujifilm X100V debuted in 3rd place but quickly moved up to first after Fujifilm started to ship the silver Fujifilm X100V, which is what happened with the X-Pro3.

DPRTV Fujifilm ACROS II Review

DPRTV took Fujifilm ACROS II for a walkabout Calgary to see how it compares to the original. The new formulation has been said to have more contrast and punch. When compared to digital ACROS it is very different. Digital ACROS is contrasty with much deeper blacks and brighter highlights with a different tonal range and grain structure, but Jorden prefers ACROS II for skin tones. Both have distinct looks, but they are far apart.

BCN: Fujifilm Grew 115.6% Year Over Year in March While Others Flounder

BCN says that camera sales in March 2020 were down 49.5% year over year, but Fujifilm came out way ahead. Mirrorless camera sales were even halved according to their data, but Fujifilm, grew 115.6% while everyone else struggled. Fujifilm seems to be on a roll even with COVID-19 disrupting the world economy. Let’s hope that it continues.

Unpacking the Stimulus Bill for Freelancers
COVID-19 has led to some unprecedented federal legislation and many freelancers have been left trying to understand how it affects them. This week’s Fujifilm Friday Forum brings you Tom Maddrey, ASMP’s General Counsel to the American Society of Media Photographers, to answer all of your stimulus bill questions.

Update:
I attended the meeting and it was useful. It seems everything is up in the area, but the attorney on the call recommended that photographers apply for everything they can. I don’t want to give any legal advice on this blog and the lawyer they had explaining everything wasn’t comfortable going into tax, but they are having another townhall today, which you can watch here at 3PM you can also find their resources here.

Tales of the X-T4: Tale 3 ETERNA Bleach Bypass

Previously Fujifilm released X-T4 tales:

Tales of the X-T4: Tale 1 – Versatile Performance
Tales of the X-T4: Tale 2 – IBIS

Now Fujifilm has released its second tale “Tales of the X-T4: Tale 3”

Fujifilm has always been a company that cared about color science whether dealing with film or digital photography. This is why in 2003 they started creating film simulations in their digital cameras with the FinePix F700, which featured “F-Simulation” that kicked off Fujifilm’s continued roll-out of digital film stock simulations.

The rolling out of film simulations haven’t been random, because starting with the X-Pro2 Fujifilm introduced “ACROS” which fit the design philosophy of the X-Pro2, which was followed by “ETERNA” in the X-H1 which was intended for video use, and later “Classic Neg.” for the X-Pro3. This has now lead to “ETERNA Bleach Bypass” in the X-T4.

“ETERNA Bleach Bypass” is the follow up to “ETERNA”, which was introduced for the X-H1 that was intended to be more videocentric. When Fujifilm compares their film simulations “PROVIA” was dead center until the introduction of “ETERNA”, which is outside the matrix of their photography centric simulations due to its low saturation and contrast, which you can learn about here.

Now “ETERNA Bleach Bypass” pushes Fujifilm simulations even further, making “ETERNA” more of a middle ground simulation. It resembles black-and-white photographs dropping saturation even more, while tightening dynamic range making it equivalent to “Classic Chrome” for photography on their matrix which you can see below.

In Japan “bleach bypass” is know as “retaining the silver” because it skips the step of removing (“bleaching”) the silver halide during development which goes back to the days of film. Fujifilm has been aware of this technique for some time and they have decided to introduce it first in its “bleach bypass” movie film simulation.

This effect is very different today, because in the past it was done for movies being projected on a screen, while digital images are often viewed on monitors, phones, TV screens, and more. This made designing “bleach bypass” an engineering challenge because it has to be designed to relay the same impression created by viewing the film in the theater on any format that it is viewed.
