Tales of the X-T4: Tale 2 – IBIS

Previously Fujifilm released their first X-T4 tale called “Tales of the X-T4: Tale 1 – Versatile Performance.” Now Fujifilm has released its second tale “Tales of the X-T4: Tale 2.”

In Fujifilm’s second tale they talk about how a camera’s unique design factors that go into a good IBIS system. Good IBIS systems are not plug and play and must take into consideration internal and external noise that can disrupt IBIS and the gyro sensor necessary to maximize performance.

The design of the lens attached to the camera also influences IBIS performance because the internal IBIS mainly handles the roll axis of the camera or about 1/5th of the maximum IBIS performance of a five-axis system.

The camera’s internal gyro detects changes of angle that are used with focal length data to calculate how to move the CMOS sensor to maximize the reduction of blur caused by motion on the pitch and yaw axes. Lenses that talk with the camera also provide aperture and focus position for calculating the movement of the camera, which is why third party lenses do not work as well. With third party lenses, you can expect about 4 stops of stabilization if you input the focal length information in the camera.

Image circle also plays a factor in how well IBIS can work because a bigger image circle will allow the sensor to move more. Prime lenses, in general, can be tricky to work with because they are optimized to locate the sensor in the lenses’ sweet spot.

The last element used to maximize IBIS performance is the distance to the subject, which is easy to obtain with native glass, but adapted glass can be tricky here. If you’re using an AF adapter on your X-T4 with Canon or Nikon lenses the adapter might send incorrect distance information to the camera that could make IBIS work against you while shooting, which is why Fujifilm recommends that you stick with Fujinon lenses.
