DPRTV: Pre-Amp Shootout Fujifilm X-T3/X-T4, Sony a7III, Panasonic S1H, Olympus E-M1 Mark III, Nikon Z6, and Canon ES-1D Mark III

DPRTV did a Microphone pre-amp Shootout with a Fujifilm X-T3 (X-T4 has the same preamp), Sony a7III, Panasonic S1H, Olympus E-M1 Mark III, Nikon Z6, and Canon ES-1D Mark III. Below you can see a summary and the results or you can watch the video above.

  • Pre-amps amplify things before they are recorded
  • Just about everything needs to be brought up to a level that it can be heard in your software or camera
  • Good preamps have a high signal with a low amount of noise
  • Bad preamps have noise that gets mixed into the signal
  • Your preamp is the celling of quality you’re going to hear so a bad preamp with a good mic will be limited and you might hear a lot, but there will be noise mixed in.
  • A good preamp with a bad mic will let you hear everything the mic can capture, but it won’t fully utilize the preamp
  • mediocre preamps and below also add hiss

Proper audio levels

  • Canon ES-1D Mark III was fantastic
  • Fujifilm X-T3/X-T4 was really good
  • Nikon Z6 was solid
  • Olympus E-M1 Mark III was middling
  • Panasonic S1H favorite
  • Sony a7III sounded bad with lots of hiss and noise

Low audio levels out of the mic -20db below ideal

  • Each camera had more noise
  • Canon ES-1D Mark III had a digital not consistent noise
  • Fujifilm X-T3/X-T4 running water sound with a high-level whine
  • Nikon Z6 running water sound
  • Olympus E-M1 Mark III running water sound
  • Panasonic S1H running water sound
  • Sony a7III was really really really bad it boosted the bad sound

High audio levels out of the mic +10db above ideal

  • One thing that helps hot signals is a limiter, attenuator, or compressor to take a hot signal and dampen it down
  • Canon ES-1D Mark III did a great job and it sounded natural with the limiter
  • Fujifilm X-T3/X-T4 was a little crunchy and the limiter affected the audio
  • Nikon Z6 was a lot like the Canon
  • Olympus E-M1 Mark III was not as bad as the Fujifilm, but not as good as the Canon and Nikon
  • Panasonic S1H limiter didn’t sound right
  • Sony a7III still sounds like hot garbage

Rankings

  • Canon ES-1D Mark III – Didn’t expect it to sound this good
  • Nikon Z6 and Panasonic S1H (tie) – Both have issues, but not bad
  • Fujifilm X-T3/X-T4 – good sounding camera
  • Olympus E-M1 Mark III – not as good as the rest of the cameras
  • Sony a7III – unbelievable amount of noise

Astrophotography Coronavirus (COVID-19) Quarantine Photography Project Follow Up

I have been shooting Astrophotography for a while now and I always like to try new things so I picked up the Venus Optics Laowa Magic Format Converter MFC (Nikon F to Fujifilm G) for my Fujifilm GFX100 and the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D and Samyang 24mm f/1.4 ED AS UMC Wide-Angle for Nikon F Mount to use during the Quarantine as the ultimate social distancing. Both lenses worked well, but I decided to focus on the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D for now.

Shooting Astrophotography on the GFX100 is a bit tricky because the high megapixel count can make it difficult to get pinpoint stars when shooting the Milkyway. If you use calculators like photo pills they will inform you that with a 12mm f/2.8 lens you can shoot for 53s if you use the classic 500 Rule, but if you go by the NPF rule that takes into account the megapixels of your camera you can only expose for 16.76s on the GFX100. If you use the GFX50S/GFX50R the NPF Rule is 20.34s, which is more reasonable.

The reason this is important is that to get a good exposure that I could work with I had to shoot wide open for 30 seconds at 6400ISO, which did allow for some streaking when zoomed in, but it looks good zoomed out. I hope to squeeze in one or two more nights during the Quarantine, but I am very happy with the Venus Optics Laowa Magic Format Converter MFC (Nikon F to Fujifilm G) so far. It makes the GFX100 a much better camera for astrophotography than it could be with any of its native lenses.

Initially, I was a bit disappointed with my results and I wished I brought more useful lighting to expose the surroundings better with light painting, but I found that using Capture One with Luminar 4 gave me some good results that I am sharing below. I worked the foreground elements in Capture One and then exported the file as a 16-bit TIFF file to open in Luminar 4. In Luminar 4 I used their superior masking tool to apply edits to the sky, which made the Milky Way pop more than Capture One could.

I can’t say I’m a fan of Caputre One, but it is growing on me for some purposes, but Luminar 4 never fails to impress. I’m trying to learn some new editors in-depth during the Quarantine so if you want to see some comparison results make sure to follow me on Instagram because I’m starting to reprocess some of my favorites photos with new editors and posting the results. At this point, I would probably move to a more Luminar centric workflow if the app was more logically organized for me, but the same is true of Capture One. I hope they both continue to grow on me as I learn them better, but both do a better job processing Fujifilm files than Lightroom in my experience.

Information of Avigan Tablet in Relation to COVID-19

We have been reporting about Avigan for a while now 1, 2, 3, 4 now Fujifilm has released more information about their Avigan Tablet in Relation to Covid-19 that you can read about below.

Information of Avigan Tablet in Relation to Covid-19
FUJIFILM Corporation delivers correct information regarding the Avigan Tablet developed by FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical Co., Ltd.

The Avigan Tablet was approved for manufacture and sale in Japan in 2014 as an influenza antiviral drug. The drug is to be considered for use only when there is an outbreak of novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections in which other influenza antiviral drugs are either not effective or insufficiently effective, and the Japanese government decides to use the drug as a countermeasure against such influenza viruses. Thus, while the Japanese government has a certain stockpile of the drug, the drug has never been distributed in the market and is not available at hospitals and pharmacies in Japan or overseas.

Favipiravir, the active pharmaceutical ingredient of the Avigan Tablet, has a mechanism that prevents the propagation of viruses. The drug may potentially have an antiviral effect on the novel coronavirus which is classified into the same type (single-stranded RNA virus) of influenza virus. However, at this stage, clinical application of the Avigan Tablet to the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is under study and preparation in order to obtain clear evidence of the drug’s efficacy and safety on the novel coronavirus.

The Avigan Tablet has not been approved for marketing in any countries other than Japan. If the government or regulatory authorities in the countries decides the use of the drug, Fujifilm group intends to cooperate sincerely with the supply of the drug to such countries in consultation and coordination with the Japanese government.
