Fujifilm X-T4 Shipping From Major US Retailers

I woke up to notice this morning that my Fujifilm X-T4 has shipped from B&H Photo and will be arriving next week. It looks like most camera shops have the X-T4 in stock, but probably not for long so grab one while you can.

Fujifilm Releases New Tutorial About Firmware Updates

Last week we posted a bunch of general Fujifilm tutorials from this From The Workbench series, which you can watch here. We also shared some X-T4 tutorials that Fujifilm released, which you can see here. Below is a summary of what the above contains:

Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes lenses or cameras have minor bugs that can be fixed with a firmware
  • Fujifilm also uses firmware to make your camera or lenses better and faster
  • Some examples are Fujifilm has added Faster AF, New Film Simulations, and Improved Battery Life
  • Fujifilm is even updating discontinued cameras at no charge
  • You can download all your firmware updates via the computer and put them on your SD card from here
  • Firmware updates can also be downloaded via the smartphone app, but that will be covered another time
  • If you download multiple files and they are labeled with (#) you must remove the number from the file name for it to work eg XFUP0037 (1).DAT must be XFUP0037.DAT to work
  • You can load firmware for your camera and multiple lenses from one transfer
  • Put the SD card in your camera and then press and hold the display back button while turning the camera on
  • Once the white screen shows up you can let go of the display back button and then follow the directions
  • Make sure your batteries are charged and do not remove them during the process

Fujifilm GFX + Laowa 9mm f/5.6 For A Unique 7.1mm Mega Wide Angle Experience

Mattias Burling tested the COVID-19 delayed Laowa 9mm f/5.6 Zero-D for M-mount on his Fujifilm GFX50R with a Kipon adapter and it actually covers a surprising amount of the sensor with the lens hood being visible on the top and bottom of the frame. The lens also vignettes some, even on full-frame, but if you shoot 16×9 or 65×24 then the images are quite usable and are completely unique using the full width of the sensor. The lens also has a close focus distance of 10cm which allows for more unique creative opportunities.

It might even be worth someone trying to remove the fixed lens hood from the lens to get access to even more of the sensor’s ability to resolve if you really like the look of a rectilinear 7.1mm lens. I personally really love the look of wide-angle XPan aspect ratio photography so I might pick up this combo when it becomes available.

STEELSRING NK-F to GFX Auto Focus Adapter Review

Dylan Goldby posted his review of the STEELSRING NK-F to GFX Auto Focus Adapter and it is surprisingly positive considering how difficult Nikon AF adapters have been to create. Below is a summary of the above video and there is a more lengthy review here:

  • Focusing accurately at f/1.4 on the gfx isn’t easy to do with manual focus so adapters like these are great
  • Dylan missed AF even if it was just to get them close and then fine-tune the focus
  • Dylan tried multiple adapters looking for this ability
  • Nikon G and E type lenses on Nikon F Mount will work with this adapter since they have focus motors inside
  • Steelsring build quality is about what you would expect for the price point
  • It feels like it was machined well, but wished mounting to the GFX body sounded a bit smoother, but the Nikon mount sounds normal
  • Dylan isn’t worried about it damaging the mount though
  • The adapter has an aperture for G type lenses and you can set it to auto for E type lenses and then use the body to control the lens
  • The aperture ring could have been a little better implemented since the adapter doesn’t tell the camera how much it stops down
  • AF speed is very good considering it is a system interpreting other peoples lenses
  • The main limitation of AF seems to be how much glass you have to move
  • You will see CDAF wobble on the GFX
  • Doesn’t support GFX100 PDAF and not sure if it is possible
  • All GFX cameras will focus the same with this adapter
  • You won’t be tracking sports at this point
  • If you’re expecting Nikon speed AF then you probably want to skip this
  • If you’re expecting GFX focus speeds than you might want this adapter
  • Some of the Nikon glass will vignette, but you can use 35mm crop mode
  • Sharpness isn’t always there wide open since many Nikon lenses weren’t designed for this kind of resolution

Japan Sent Fujifilm’s Favipiravir (Avigan) to 43 Countries For COVID-19 Trials

We have been following Fujifilm Avigan (Favipiravir) and COVID-19 involvement for a while ( 123456789, 101112, 13) and trials keep coming up with positive results. It is now being reported that Fujifilm is sharing their “wonder drug” via the Japanese Government with 43 countries for approval in the treatments of COVID-19 via the United Nations Office for Project Services. This initial shipment should treat between 20 to 100 people per country.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants favipiravir approved for Covid-19 in May, as Japan moves to fast-track approval for remdesivir as well, which the United States has backed. As of now, Remdesivir is gaining acceptance for the treatment of sever cases of COVID-19, but it is hoped that Fujifilm’s Avigan (Favipiravir) can be used to treat more mild cases. Read More »
