NiSi V6 Filter Kit III Released

I demoed a NiSi filter kit for a little after I purchased my LEE setup and I was very impressed with its premium build quality and glass filters. The leather case that housed it all was one of the nicest out, but it was a little on the heavy side and not very functional. Well, now it looks like my small gripes about their system have been addressed with the new NiSi V6 Filter Kit III.

NiSi is also including the exceptional Natural Night filter in their Advanced and Professional kit, which is one of my favorite filters for making the night sky pop. It does a very good job at reducing or eliminating light pollution for those of us that do not have access to completely dark skies. You can use this filter with any 100 x 100mm or 150 x 150mm filters holder though so no need to switch filter systems unless you want to try something new.

V6 vs V5 Pro

The V6 features the following improvements over the V5 Pro:

  • New streamlined design – making it easier to insert and remove ND filters in any slot.
  • New Clip Design – Our unique clip system that holds the filter has been improved even further.  As well as the left to right pressed clips that hold the filter secure, filters are now easier to insert with guides along the clips.
  • Optimized design of the CPL – The C-PL is easier to insert and remove with a raised design, noticeably higher than the V5 Pro.
  • The holder rotates 360 degrees as well as features a lock to fix the filters in a single position.
  • New Soft Pouch – The new soft pouch to hold the V6 can be mounted on a tripod leg for easy access.
  • Upgraded Lens Cap – The lens cap is now even easier to fit and remove while protecting the CPL and Lens.

Godox: V1 vs V860II: Do You See The Difference?

Godox has become very popular among Fujifilm photographers and the Godox V1, in particular, is of interest to many because it is a low-cost alternative to the Profoto A1 and it is available for Fujifilm cameras without a trigger. The above demo does a decent job of demonstrating one difference between a round head flash vs a square head, but there is still debate about if the difference matters. At least Godox is doing a good job of keeping up with Profoto’s tech at a reasonable price. More options for Fujifilm cameras is always appreciated.

Fujifilm GFX is The New Leica in Billingham Hadley Pro 2020 Camera Bag Announcement

It’s interesting that the Fujifilm GFX is being used to advertise the new Billingham Hadley Pro 2020 camera bags in their announcement. In the past, Billingham used Leica cameras to advertise their bags, but the release of the GFX made it harder for Leica fans to justify their purchase. Maybe this is a sign of things to come or maybe Billingham and Leica’s relations have soured. It sure would be nice if Billingham released a Fujifilm branded bag for the GFX like they did for the Leica M.

Billingham still makes some pretty great bags and you will find Hadley Pro 2020 camera bags at B&H Photo, Amazon, and Adorama

Billingham has unveiled the Hadley Pro 2020: a new model in its iconic Hadley camera bag range, offering outstanding protection, comfort and flexibility. The new bag builds upon the popularity of the Hadley Pro – Billingham’s biggest-selling model – with the addition of several new features requested by Billingham owners and photographers worldwide. The enhancements have been designed to increase the bag’s versatility and portability, while retaining the popular dimensions, capacity, ergonomics and classic format of the original Hadley Pro.

The Hadley Pro 2020 will be available from 7 August 2019 at a suggested retail price of £240 including VAT. Read More »

Fujinon XF16mm f/2.8: Flawed, But A Good Value

The Fujinon XF16mm f/2.8 has been popular among fans of compact mirrorless cameras, but the lens has a few issues according to lens tips that are similar to the controversial Fujinon XF18mm f/2.0 R. I do not know many that would defend or purchase the XF18mm, but a few do. I imagine many more will buy the XF16mm f/2.8, especially if they are intereted in the excilent XF16mm f/1.4.

“Looking at the results of our test I have no doubts the Fujinon XF 16 mm f/2.8 R WR is a very sensible device and will find many fans especially that, costing just $400, it remains one of the cheapest system lenses. Paradoxically, the Fujinon XF 18 mm f/2.0 R, just a tad more expensive but faster, might become its biggest and most serious rival. Still these 2 mm difference in focal length might be important for many users. Why? It’s enough to move with the focal length in an opposite direction. The Fujinon XF 14 mm f/2.8 R, as fast aperture-wise as the tested lens but with the focal length by 2 mm shorter, costs over two times more.”

Pros:

  • shapely, solid, weather-sealed casing,
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • lack of any spherical aberration problems,
  • sensible performance against bright light,
  • silent, accurate and fast autofocus.

Cons:

  • a bit too high coma at the maximum relative aperture,
  • huge distortion for RAW files,
  • big brightness loss on RAW files.

LEE Tandem Adapter and Hood Announced

LEE Tandem Adapter: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
LEE Hood: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Welcoming the latest additions to the LEE100 Family

Following on from the hugely successful launch of the new LEE100 Filter Holder earlier in 2019, LEE Filters has now introduced two new products to further enhance the system.

The LEE100 Tandem Adaptor
There are occasions when one filter holder isn’t enough, and this is when the new LEE100 Tandem Adaptor proves invaluable. Unique to the LEE Filters system, the Tandem Adaptor, which is constructed from aluminium, allows the photographer to use more than one ND grad and rotate each independently of the other, so they can be set at different angles. This allows for far more precise creative control of the exposure in complex lighting situations than one holder alone.

To fit, the first LEE100 Filter Holder is attached to the lens via the adaptor ring as normal. The LEE100 Tandem Adaptor then slides into the holder’s outermost slot, and the second LEE100 Filter Holder is attached to the adaptor. The holder closest to the lens can be used with up to three filter slots (one must be used for the Tandem), while the holder that’s attached to the Tandem Adaptor can be configured with one, two or three further filter guides.

Both holders can be rotated freely until the desired effect is achieved, and then locked in place to avoid any accidental movement of the filters.

The LEE100 Hood
Versatile and sturdy, the LEE100 Hood is fully compatible with the new LEE100 Filter Holder. Designed to shade the camera’s lens, and reduce the risk of stray light and flare spoiling the image, it can be used with up to three slot-in filters plus the LEE Filters Polariser. Constructed from a water-resistant reinforced nylon in a collapsible concertina design, it is self-supporting, with no need for intrusive and fiddly rails or guides, and can be adjusted to different angles and extensions for maximum versatility.

Simple to set up, the hood comes with an attachment ring that is affixed to the LEE100 Filter Holder via four locking tabs. The hood is then locked securely on to the attachment ring with a lever. It is then attached to the adaptor ring in the usual way.

The hood can be rotated independently of the LEE100 Filter Holder, allowing the photographer to use ND grads as normal, while still getting the most out of the hood itself. At its fullest extension, the hood can be used with lenses of around 28mm and a two-slot filter guide without the risk of vignetting. Once it is reduced to half extension, lenses as wide as around 20mm can be used without vignetting.

Simple to extend and collapse, and quick to attach and detach, the LEE100 Hood is the ideal addition to the photographer’s kit bag.

Pricing
The LEE100 Tandem Adaptor is available to purchase from LEE Filters dealers from 5th August 2019, with a RRP of £44.50 ex-VAT.

The LEE100 Hood is available to purchase from LEE Filters dealers from 19th August 2019, with a RRP of £208.00 ex-VAT.
