TCSTV: Fujifilm GFX100 Studio Photography Interview with Jason Eng

I’m a day one adopter of the GFX system and I can verify that once you shoot a GFX camera it is impossible to not compare it to others because it really is a cut above the rest. That being said GFX is not necessary, but it does provide you with many additional creative opportunities that can help you make shots and recover shots that might otherwise be impossible. There is nothing quite like GFX and when I use cameras other than my GFX100 I always find myself wondering how much better it might have looked if I just shot it with my GFX, to begin with. Below is a summary of the above video interview:

  • Jason’s assistant wanted to get a new camera system so they looked at Canon and the GFX was the same price so they compared it to the Sony they were using and it blew them away even at laptop screen size
  • GFX Camera details and gradation are unmatched
  • The compression and distortion on the GFX are useful to work with
  • The Fujifilm GFX100 calls back to classic professional cameras that had fixed vertical grip
  • GFX100 has a fully usable AF system that doesn’t miss.
  • The GFX100 vertical grip is great for him
  • The Sony was great because it was a small half body that you can just throw in your bag and go which reaches a larger target audience.
  • Today things are compact so you can go either way
  • The Fujifilm classic film presets come right in to capture one without doing a destructive edit
  • Color has been hard in the digital world and Canon was king until Fujifilm came along
  • Fujifilm was the only company to match Canon’s color, but he couldn’t see himself shooting APS-C, but now there is GFX
  • GFX has great skin tones and reds that are rich and deep
  • GFX has a lot of great lenses, but adapting legacy lenses to the GFX is fantastic
  • Adapting lenses for artistic portraits or just yourself gives you some of the softness that film had and it helps the simulations
  • Pro-level cameras are around 5k and dropping the GFX to just under that is a game-changer because traditionally you would spend 30k for what GFX gives you
  • Once you see the color and shadow tonality range that the GFX is capable of is impossible to unsee
  • 100MP doesn’t have to be about giant print ads it is about all the extra information

Sigma’s Road to X-Mount Was Nine Years in The Making

Fujifilm posted an X Talk #27 with Sigma’s general manager Mr. Ozone and Fujifilm Manager Ueno. Thankfully I do not have to rely on Google translate for this summary because DC.Life posted a summary of interesting points in Japanese that are much easier to translate accurately. I also watched the video and added some more myself. Below is a summary of the key points.

  • Fujifilm visited Sigma 9 years ago to talk X-Mount, but Sigma wanted Fujifilm to release mount information which they only released recently.
  • Fujifilm Manager Ueno is happy he was able to expand the number of companies making lenses for X-mount and happy he was able to release protocols.
  • Mr. Ozone sees a variety of lenses like there are a variety of colored pencils because they each have their own look, which Fujifilm Manager Ueno follows up with that even when f stop and focal length are equal each lense has its own character.
  • Sigma could adopt an aperture ring design at great expense, but since Sigma will do mount swaps they chose to pursue increased compatibility over specializing lenses for X-mount
  • Sigma figured there wouldn’t be much excitement from them joining X-mount since the designs weren’t new ones and Fujifilm had similar lenses, but they were wrong.

It sounds like Sigma is going to be more forward-thinking with X-mount and the next lens we should see from them is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary which is expected December of 2022

FY2021: Fujifilm Financial Results – Instax and Professional Sales Remain Strong

Imaging Segment In the Imaging segment, consolidated revenue amounted to ¥333.4 billion (up 16.9% year-over-year). Consolidated operating income amounted to ¥37.0 billion (up 137.2% year-over-year).

In the consumer imaging field, steady sales of instant photo systems, color paper and dry minilabs / materials drove revenue higher. Regarding instant photo systems, sales of both devices and film fared well. In October 2021, we launched the instax Link WIDE smartphone printer, which can print images taken with a smartphone on to a wide-format film, twice the size of the regular card-sized mini-format film. Due to a newly added function, which generates a QR code for a voice / text messages, location data, a website’s URL, etc. and incorporates it into a print, instax Link WIDE has been well received not only for personal use but also for business use. In December 2021, we launched the hybrid instant camera instax mini Evo, a flagship model of the instax series, which supports miniformat film. Sales volume rose strongly as it gained a high reputation for its classical design and 100 combinations of shooting effects. We will continue meeting increasingly diverse customer needs and offering user-friendly, highvalue added products and services, while also communicating to the world the intrinsic photographic values of “shooting, preserving, displaying, and gifting.”

In the professional imaging field, revenue increased as sales of digital cameras and broadcast and cinema lenses fared well. Regarding digital cameras, sales rose for the large-format mirrorless digital camera FUJIFILM GFX100S with a high resolution of 102 million pixels. In September 2021, the FUJIFILM GFX50S II large-format mirrorless digital camera equipped with a 51.4-million-pixel image sensor was released as the latest addition to the GFX Series, which resulted in the GFX user base expanding. In November 2021, we launched the FUJIFILM XT30 II mirrorless digital camera, the latest model of the X Series, which delivers premium image quality despite being compact and lightweight. We will continue to offer attractive products by realizing high image quality through the GFX Series and the best balance between image quality and size through the X Series. Sales of broadcast and cinema lenses were higher than in the previous year, due to a recovery in demand, which had been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
