Sunday Savings

New Fujifilm X-T20 savings are now included in the list. Also, FujiAddict/SonyAddict/Nikonrumors will be heading up to the cape tomorrow for the Falcon heavy launch so at least on my sites I plan to do some coverage of the launch on Monday and Tuesday. If I have a good enough signal I might even live stream from the VIP launch area, which is the closest viewing area available so make sure you follow FujiAddict on Facebook. Also, follow me on Instagram and YouTube, because I might use one of their platforms to go live if I don’t use Facebook live. It will largely depend on what cellular service is like from the viewing area, but if I can’t stream I will be posting photos as quickly as possible. I plan to shoot at 600mm and 1200mm, which I will post more about later.

Fringer EF/FX Smart Adapters Firmware 1.10

The first firmware update, i.e. v1.10, is available now. All Fringer EF-FX Pro adapters are suggested to be upgraded.

The new firmware mainly addressed following issues and added some lenses to tested and optimized lens list.

  1. Fixed IS not stable issue for some EF lenses.
  2. Fixed some compatibility issues for Tamron lenses.
  3. Added following lenses to the tested and optimized lens list:
    • Canon EF 50/1.8 II
    • Canon EF 70-200/2.8L IS
    • Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS
    • Tamron SP10-24/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD B023

You may download the new firmware and its release note as well as user’s manual from the official website.

Be noted there are two versions.

  • EFFX110P.BIN for Pro version: Electronic aperture ring set aperture
  • EFFX110S.BIN for Standard version: Camera command dial set aperture

You need a PC or MAC and a USB Micro B cable to upgrade the adapter.

  1. Connect the adapter to your computer.
  2. Find a new driver named “FRINGER” and copy new firmware to it.
  3. Wait for 10 seconds and then disconnect the adapter.
  4. Reconnect it again to check installed firmware version (VERSION.TXT on the adapter)

Read user’s manual for more detailed description on how to upgrade your adapter.

Lightroom vs Capture One: What You Might Not Know About RAW Image Files

I am a big fan of the Art of Photography channel and have followed it from the beginning, so I value Ted Forbes’ opinion on this topic, but I am kind of shocked he prefers Capture One so much. I have used Capture One on and off since version 9 and I am currently giving it a very serious look to replace Lightroom, but if I were to use it I would need to use it alongside an app like Luminar so that I could edit my Fujifilm GFX Files.

Some of the information in the above video covers very cursory ideas about RAW editors that more technical photographers should already be aware of, but it can also help viewers to articulate why they might prefer Capture One over other RAW editors. I agree with Ted’s research that upon initially opening a file Capture One generally does have better color transition than other editors, but not necessarily better color in my experience. The above sample image clearly shows a white balance issue in Lightroom opening the image, but Capture One picked a very unnatural orange to represent the pumpkin that can’t simply be the product of saturation.

You can’t really make a judgment from this single example, but it is somewhat telling of the starting point in each application and it’s why the testing that I have shared so far was done in a way to try to make the images match the best I could. It’s kind of hard to share hundreds or thousands of test images like this, but making images match and meet your expectations is, in my opinion, the best way to demonstrate raw editors. You should always edit images to suit your tastes and when I did so Capture One fell apart.

I respect that companies like Capture One ProLuminar (Discount Code FUJIADDICT), IridientON1 2018 and Picktorial, are all keeping a one-time fee model in place while aggressively marketing to photographers leaving Lightroom. They all make great software, but I wish Capture One Pro would start supporting the Fujifilm GFX because the GFX is going to take customers from Phase One with or without Capture One. Capture One isn’t cheap and at this time I am leaning towards only recommending it for studio work, which most photographers do not do.

It’s nice to have options and I am still doing a lot of testing to see what I prefer and how I can best share my testing. I am largely waiting to see how Luminar’s digital asset manager performs, but now that Adobe is promising additional Lightroom classic speed improvements in 7.2 it will have to be that much better even though the initial Lightroom 7.2 testing results are somewhat inconsistent. The big story in 2018 might end up being which RAW editors won and lost rather than what cameras came out. The Fujifilm X-H1 is a camera meant for very specific needs and many are upset about the possibility that the Fujifilm X-T3 most likely will not have IBIS, which I wrote about why here, so leaving Lightroom might be the big story of 2018 for X shooters unless Adobe turns things around.

The Fujifilm Magnum Photo Collaboration Project Moves Into The Real World This March

It looks like Fujifilm has finally formally announced the completion of the Magnum Home project, which we have been following for a while. FujiAddict first started following the project back in September when the 0rigional artists were announced. We then followed up in December and January as the Youtube channel began to accelerate.

The physical aspect of the Home project at the Milk Gallery in New York kicks off March 2-14th, which was reported back in January, but the gallery still doesn’t have a page for the exhibit on their website. Fujifilm has some special events scedualed for this opening that includes talks, photowalks, a free check and clean, and more. From there the exhibit will travel to London, Paris, Tokyo, Koln, Italy, and China. You can read more below. Read More »

Fujifilm to Terminate 10,000 Jobs in Xerox Merger

Xerox has fallen on hard times, which is partially why Fujifilm is acquiring them in this merger, which will see 10,000 jobs cut. It is not uncommon for redundant positions to be terminated and for fat to be trimmed when companies merge like this, but the restructuring of Xerox will be a tricky one since the copier industry has shrunk dramatically and continues to shrink.

It will be interesting to see what kind of benefit this merger brings to Fujifilm as they hope to reduce annual costs at Xerox by 50 billion yen ($460 million) in the process. This should help cover the losses of $196 million Xerox experience in the quarter ended December, which saw full-year revenues fall by nearly 5%, but will the overall acquisition be a profitable one for Fujifilm?

The Xerox brand will survive and continue to sell printers, copiers, production systems and software for now with combined revenues of about $18 billion across 180 countries, but can Fujifilm turn the company around? Xerox’s CEO Jeff Jacobson believes this merger “will unlock significant growth and productivity opportunities” for Xerox, but what about Fujifilm? Jacobson will serve as CEO of the new Fuji Xerox entity, while Fujifilm Chairman and CEO Shigetaka Komori will be chairman.

We will continue following this story as it develops…
