Fujifilm X-H1 vs Fujifilm X-T2 vs Sony a7RIII vs Panasonic GH5S

The Fujifilm X-H1 is very well positioned at this time to pick up a lot of professional photographers and videographers that bought into other systems or are considered buying into them. The spec sheets show how it sits between the resolution monster that is the Sony a7RIII and the video-centric Panasonic GH5S. You can read my write ups about how I think they compare at SonyAddict and 43Addict, but here I am going to say that I think Fujifilm struck a nice balance by incorporating a lot of the features you would want from the GH line of cameras that Sony doesn’t currently have, while providing popular options like IBIS and Flicker Reduction, which Sony had over Fujifilm until now.

A reader brought up sensor size so I will address it here and say that APS-C has advantages and disadvantages over Full Frame. The additional reach of APS-C is a huge advantage for some, while the added dynamic range of Full Frame is valuable to others, but one takes a lot more skill to use completely than the other. The Sensors that are currently available compare very well to each other right up to the breaking point and I have never felt that my Sony a7RIII can take a photo that my Fujifilm X-T2 cannot. m43 is a different matter altogether, which is why they dropped a 10MP sensor in the Panasonic GH5S.

Strangely enough, I have also heard some photographers claim that Fujifilm cameras are expensive, but if you look at the entire market Panasonic/Olympus are the most expensive for what you get, with Fujifilm often offering the most for your money. Sensor size isn’t the only thing to consider when looking at pricing and out of the above cameras, the Fujifilm X-H1 is the most affordable of the three. You can see the competitive price advantage of Fujifilm cameras from the Fujifilm GFX through the Fujifilm X-A5.

Positioning the Fujifilm X-H1 camera between so many flagship cameras is an interesting move by Fujifilm. They are one of the few camera companies doing well financially and they continue to grow every day. Their implementation of IBIS was a move largely made to attract m43 and Sony photographers or photographers looking into those systems, but many Fujifilmphotographers like myself will likely stick with the Fujifilm X-T2 since the X-H1 will not offer much over it for photos and some of the features will be patched into the X-T2 later. I’m really not sure Fujifilm even need to run the X-T2 Sale that they did to continue growing the system and it could have waited until additional Fujifilm X-T3 details emerged so take advantage while you can and hopefully the Fujifilm X-H1 helps grow Fujifilm’s base.

Fujinon XF 200m f/2 Will Cost Between $4900-5000 and Use a New Teleconverter Plus GFX Lens Update

My source for the FujiAddict timeline and GFX lens roadmap touched base today with an update for the GFX roadmap and some details about the Fujinon XF200 f/2 lens that is coming. They usually touch base when other sites publish incorrect information so let’s hope they keep making mistakes about things like pricing 😀

First one, fujifilm gave up GF 80-180 .

Now,  Fujifilm Works on GF 100-200mm. They want make a 100-200mm lens but they can change mind.

I was able to verify the rest of the GFX lens roadmap is unchanged so I am updating the roadmap to reflect the changes.

XF 200m f/2 will coast around 4900-5000$ and will not be   (yes, will not) compatible with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter.

There will be a new teleconverter with compatible with XF 200mm. The teleconverter will coast around 900-1000$

Total Price (XF 200mm + Teleconverter) will cost 5800-6000$

There is no exact information about type (1.4x or 2.0x) of converter. But a guesses “it will be 1.4x tele converter” (most probably)

So the Fujinon XF200 f/2 will cost between $4,900 and $5,000. Not the $6,000 that others have incorrectly reported. Now watch them say it includes the TC that they didn’t know about to make up for the error.

Fujifilm X-H1 vs Fujifilm X-T2 by The Spec Sheet

The Fujifilm X-H1 is certainly an interesting camera, but is it right for you? I have had a little time to go over all of the features and made the above comparison chart for FujiAddict readers. As predicted the Fujifilm X-H1 is strongest as a video camera, but it does have a few big and small improvements over the Fujifilm X-T2. Some care about IBIS a lot and if you do the X-H1 is for you with up to 5.5 EV of stabilization, but image quality should be basically the same as the Fujifilm X-T2.

The Fujifilm X-H1’s IBIS system uses three-axial acceleration sensors and a dual-processor to measure about 10,000 calculations per second. This requires the camera to be built to twice as high of a degree of precision as a conventional camera. The IBIS system also partially relies on the electronic first curtain shutter of the X-H1 and might benefit from the roughly 25% thicker magnesium body than the Fujifilm X-T2, which is already very well built.

When shooting video the IBIS, Flicker Reduction Mode, ETERNA, built-in high-performance microphone, Cinema 4k, internal F-log and higher 200Mbps bitrate will all help the Fujifilm X-H1 outperform the Fujifilm X-T2. The X-T2 is a competent video camera, but the X-H1 is just a cut above the X-T2 and the extra build quality and larger grip will help with larger cinema glass. Some of the video features of the X-H1 might be patched into the X-T2 later, but it’s more likely that Fujifilm will focus on the X-T2’s photography features since the cameras are more similar as digital still cameras than video.

As for photography, the Fujifilm X-T2 has a slightly better buffer than the X-H1 according to the leaked Fujifilm Specs. The AF algorithm might be better on the X-H1 for now, but Fujifilm will likely add it to the X-T2 in the future. They might even add Electronic First Curtain, Flicker reduction mode, and ETERNA in the near future too, via a firmware update. The only long-lasting advantage the X-H1 will have is geotagging via Bluetooth, which the X-T3 will have when it’s announced at Photokina and a slightly better EVF.
