DPReview: Fujifilm Interview “We Will NEVER Go Full-Frame”, Interchangeable Instax is a Possibility, and Much More

No matter how much Fujifilm says they will never go full-frame there is a portion of photographers that continue to hope they will someday, but I would recommend they not hold their breath. The Fujifilm GFX is an amazing camera and I think they have the right strategy to not take on the highly competitive full-frame market. If anything growing the medium format market into a mass market will likely be an easier task than becoming a major manufacturer in mirrorless full-frame with Sony/Nikon/Canon/Panasonic. Below are some excerpts from DPR’s interview with Toshihisa Iida and executives from Fujifilm:

  • Fujifilm has announced many important X cameras at Photokina including the X100 and GFX50S
  • Fujifilm will never enter the full-frame market because it will cannibalize their APS-C or Medium Format systems.
  • Not many photographers are moving from X series APS-C cameras to Fujifilm Medium Format at this time, most are coming from other full-frame systems.
  • When they announced the Fujifilm GFX50S they Fujifilm had a lot of requests for a rangefinder style camera, which is why the Fujifilm GFX50R was developed.
  • Fujifilm GFX50R is designed for one hand usage and is best for street, reportage and portrait photography.
  • The Fujifilm GFX100S is more SLR like and will have a detachable viewfinder like the GFX50S, but it will have an integrated battery grip for more capacity to support the images stabilization system that needs more power.
  • GF lenses were designed for a 100MP sensor because they always planned to make the leap when the sensor became available.
  • Designing an IBIS system for a 100MP medium format sensor was a challenge that had to be overcome too.
  • Fujifilm used their knowledge from the Fujifilm X-H1 to help design the Fujifilm GFX100S IBIS system.
  • The Fujifilm GFX100S EVF will be a big step up over the GFX50S because the sensor readout speed is very fast and the new X Processor 4 is very powerful.
  • Fujifilm is putting a lot of effort into developing video capabilities and they hope to attract videographers/cinematographers to the GFX with features like the first medium format camera to shoot 4K/30p.
  • Developing cine lenses for the GFX is technically possible, but not a priority at this time.
  • Many videographers contacted Fujifilm after the announcement fo the Fujifilm GFX100S because they are looking for something more to stand out.
  • SD media and HDMI output are enough for now and can support the GFX100S just fine.
  • Fujifilm doesn’t allow open development for their mounts yet, but they might in the future.
  • There will be more compact GFX lenses coming in the future.
  • Fujifilm watches the whole market including cell phones when designing cameras because they do not want their entry-level cameras cannibalized by cell phones.
  • Cell phones are their biggest competitors and not other manufacturers.
  • Fujifilm might have to develop a new camera to satisfy cell phone shooters. (Maybe a Zeiss ZX1 type camera).
  • They might make an interchangeable lens instax
  • The Pentax Q didn’t deliver enough image quality with its small sensor to be a competitive interchangeable lens camera.
  • Fujifilm prioritizes optical quality over size and they use minimal software correction as a policy at the moment, which is unlikely to change and is why they are in APS-C market. They can make small lenses without a lot of software correction for APS-C.
  • Building fast glass is difficult because of the heavier elements and more powerful focus actuators needed within a limited amount of space.
  • Making the Fujifilm GFX more capable as a video camera is difficult because they will have to optimize their lens design with the use of things like more aspherical elements along with other technologies.
  • Fujifilm could make dedicated video cameras, but they do not have concrete plans at this time and they will have to better understand the needs/requirements of videographers before getting more serious about a dedicated video camera.

Fujifilm X-T3 Roundup: Fujifilm vs The Competition, Capture One, Shutter Comparison, Video Reviews and More

The Fujifilm X-T3 has been very well reviewed since it’s launch and many photographers are making the jump to Fujifilm because they are surprised at how much the like the camera. Fujifilm X-T2 owners like myself are also making the jump and are pleasantly surprised by the performance improvements between the two. I’m also really enjoying the sound of the new shutter and the shutter button feels a little better than the X-T2. The X-T3 also has a much-improved grip that rivals the feel of the X-H1 with the handgrip is attached.

DPReview: Fujifilm X-T3 Review “as a compact, relatively affordable do-everything camera, it’s impressive.”

DPReview finished their Fujifilm X-T3 review and the camera does very well in all areas, with video performance being particularly strong and best in class. In fact, it is so strong that many GH5 owners are looking forward to the Fujifilm X-H2. The Fujifilm X-T3 is also very rugged and the AF has become very good and it will only get better with firmware updates. At $1,500 the X-T3 is an incredibly attractive camera, but some might want to purchase a Sony a7III for a few hundred dollars more to get a full frame sensor. You can read the full review here.

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Sony a6500

“The X-T3’s most direct rival is the Sony a6500: another APS-C mirrorless camera able to shoot stills and 4K video. The Fujifilm wins out comfortably, for us. Autofocus performance is broadly comparable across the two cameras (though the Sony’s Eye-AF system is better), but the operation and handling of the X-T3 is much better, as are its video capabilities. You’ll miss out on the in-body stabilization of the a6500, but Fujifilm’s larger range of lenses helps make the whole system more attractive.”

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Nikon D500

“The Nikon D500 is another obvious point of comparison. The DSLR would still be our choice for sports, action or wildlife photography but for most other photography, the X-T3’s smaller size, higher resolution, attractive output and vastly better video make it the stronger option (though users of heavy lenses may prefer the D500’s grip). Depending on your needs, the Fujifilm may have a wider choice of well-matched lenses than the Nikon.”

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Sony a7III

“Putting up more fierce competition is the Sony a7 III which, for a few hundred dollars more, offers the step up in image quality that full-frame can bring, as well as in-body image stabilization and a larger grip. The X-T3 is arguably nicer to shoot and actually out-performs the 8-bit video of the Sony but it can’t compete with its image quality or fully match the Sony’s AF performance. However, the Fujifilm is less expensive and smaller, especially if you factor in the lenses you might want, so it depends on your priorities.”

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Panasonic GH5

“The X-T3’s impressive video puts it into competition with the Panasonic GH5 and GH5S. The Panasonic pair certainly have better video support features (waveform display, uploadable LUTs for corrected displays, shutter angle control, 4:2:2 internal capture), but the Eterna color mode, along with the ability to shoot 10-bit at 60p are powerful counter-arguments. The larger sensor and more dependable AF even give the X-T3 the edge in some respects. And if you want to shoots stills too, it’s a clear win to the Fujifilm.”

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Excellent stills image quality in both JPEG and Raw
  • Impressive 10-bit 4K video capture
  • Traditional dial-based controls with good level of customization
  • Fast, configurable autofocus
  • Rapid shooting with decent buffer
  • Option for separate stills and video exposure settings
  • Effective eye detection system (though not up to Sony Eye AF standard)
  • Eterna color mode great if you don’t want to have to grade your footage
  • 10-bit Log capture (even at 60p) great if you do
  • Includes both headphone and mic sockets
  • Bluetooth makes connecting to a phone easier
  • Viewfinder nicely detailed
  • Dual-hinged screen is highly versatile
  • USB charging is convenient
  • Slightly higher noise levels at very high ISOs than its predecessor
  • Some lenses can’t take full advantage of X-T3’s AF speeds
  • Very quick to drop to a slower, darker preview mode (presumably to save battery)
  • A tripod or gimbal is needed to get the best of the camera’s video
  • No way to quickly toggle Face Detection
  • No non-face subject tracking in video

First Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 OIS WR w XF 1.4x TC F2 WR Unboxing

The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 OIS WR w XF 1.4x TC F2 WR will be shipping soon and reviews are getting their hands on final copies. Big Head Taco has been the first to unbox a few Fujifilm products lately and he does a pretty good job, but his video is very long. I am personally very tempted by this lens, but I just can’t justify it yet.

It looks like the lens comes well packaged with its own bag that has a shoulder strap and handle. It should protect your investment well, but I am surprised about how compact the lens looks on the Fujifilm X-T3 without a lens hood. The Fujinon XF 200mm f/2 OIS WR w XF 1.4x TC F2 WR and Fujifilm X-T3 will be a great combo together and I hope I get to try one out soon.
