Fujifilm X-H1 For $299 to $999!

Yesterday we posted our Sunday savings post, but today some combo deals are active that weren’t yesterday making the X-H1 $299 if you presume that the discount applies entirely to the body or see the body as disposable and the lenses as having a fixed price. Either way, this deal is pretty about as good as you will get for an X-H1 and the 8-16mm bundle is very tempting to me because I can always use a fourth Fujifilm camera body for $299 and I really want the XF8-16mm.

Fujifilm Registers FF190001

Fujifilm registered another camera the FF190001 today and Nokishita found it

Fujifilm’s “FF190001” has been registered with an overseas certification body. Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and Bluetooth installed. – nokishita

It’s widely believed the X-Pro 3 is the FF190002 that was registered over a month ago, so the FF190001 could be anything other than that. So it could be a X-E4, X-T?, X-H2, or even an entry level camera like the X-A. Personally I would really like to see a new X100 with a new 23mm f/2 lens. Others would really like to see a Fujifilm video camera since Fujifilm’s video took a leap in quality.

Fujifilm GFX100 Broken Grip Shutter Release Lock Follow Up

Fujifilm has been turning cameras around quickly that are part of the repair notice issued last month. Most repairs seem to take about 3 days in total, but a few have had to go in twice for repair. The few that have had to be serviced twice are probably partially why Fujifilm is extending the warranty on affected cameras to 2 years instead of one. This is not ideal and I would really like to see a free extension to 3-5 years, but at least it is something.

There are a few making a big deal about this error due to the price of the camera, but many other camera makes have had similar issues and not extended the warranty. Most notably the Leica M240 launched with camera strap lugs that would just come out and let the $7,000 Leica M240 fall freely to the ground unless you were lucky enough to catch the camera by the strap as it fell. This was made much worse by an almost month long turn around time for repair, so 3 days isn’t bad on a higher volume camera than the M.

Above you can see an example of how freely the vertical grip shutter release lock moves when the bearing comes out or is close to out. There is absolutely no resistance in turning the nob and the only stop in motion comes from the reflex of the switch no longer acting as a switch. If your camera is included in the list of serial numbers than you need to send your camera in, because if the bearing from the vertical grip shutter release lock gets loose inside the camera it can cause a lot more damage, which will likely take longer to repair.

Metabones® Introduces Hasselblad V to Fuji G mount (GFX) Speed Booster®

Metabones® Introduces Hasselblad V to Fuji G mount (GFX) Speed Booster®

Los Angeles, CA, USA, Aug 16, 2019: Caldwell Photographic Inc. and Metabones® are pleased to announce a new Speed Booster® Ultra 0.71x, exclusively designed for the exciting new Fuji GFX medium format camera. The initial version is specifically optimized for use with the famous Hasselblad V series lenses. This new Speed Booster uses an advanced 6-element design to achieve excellent optical performance at apertures up to f/1.4 when paired with the Hasselblad 110mm f/2 lens.

Although the Fuji GFX uses an extremely large sensor, it is nevertheless significantly smaller than the 6×6 cm film format. The new Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x is an ideal match for 6×6 Hasselblad V lenses since they can now be fully utilized as they were originally designed when mounted to the Fuji GFX. Unlike 35mm format lenses used on the Fuji GFX via glassless adapters, Hasselblad V lenses adapted to the GFX via the Speed Booster Ultra are completely free of disturbing vignetting and other corner issues.

In addition to increasing the field of view and lens speed, the new Speed Booster Ultra achieves superb performance by being carefully matched to the unique optical characteristics of the Hasselblad V lenses. All of the Hasselblad V lenses were analyzed for exit pupil size and location, and this was fully taken into account in the new Speed Booster Ultra for the Fuji GFX. This approach dictated the use of extremely large lens elements throughout in order to avoid vignetting and maintain high quality imagery into the corners, but the results speak for themselves.

Like all Metabones Speed Boosters, the Hasselblad-V to GFX Speed Booster Ultra is optimized to fully account for the camera’s filter stack located near the sensor surface. This is especially critical when using high-speed optics like the 110mm f/2, which becomes a high-performance 78mm f/1.4.

In addition to superb optical performance, the Hasselblad-V to GFX Speed Booster Ultra is equipped with an extremely robust cine-style positive locking mechanism to ensure that no play occurs during focusing. This is especially important when using Hasselblad V lenses for cine work because even though they provide a very smooth focus movement, they tend to require more torque than lesser lenses. The new Ultra also includes a very sturdy 360-degree rotation collar and extra length Arca Swiss style tripod mounting plate.

The 0.71x Speed Booster Ultra for adapting Hasselblad V lenses to the Fuji GFX will be available starting in August 16th, 2019 from the Metabones website and its worldwide dealer network for US$899, and the non-Speed Booster version will be available at the same date for US$399, plus shipping and applicable taxes and duties. Viltrox 85mm vs Samyang 85mm

Damian Brown Compared the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM vs the Samyang 85mm f/1.8 ED UMC. Below is a summary of his findings and his individual lens reviews:

  • The Samyang is about 200g lighter and it’s smaller than the Viltrox
  • Samyang 65mm minimum focus distance Viltrox  80mm
  • Samyang min aperture f/22 Viltrox f/16
  • Filter size 62mm Samyang 72mm Viltrox
  • Samyang has a better name than Viltrox
  • Viltrox was cheaper, but now about the same
  • Viltrox has AF and the Samyang does not
  • Viltrox AF works well and has a stepping motor that can be smooth in video
  • The Viltrox has some purple fringing, but it’s easy to correct
  • Damian picked the Viltrox due to it having AF and mentions that we should see more Viltrox AF lenses in the near future
