Fujifilm GFX100 Technical Analysis Part 6

Jim Kasson has published some additional GFX100 testing in addition to an interesting post about color science that is worth a read. Below are links and quotes from all his new testing that might interest you. You can catch up on what we have covered in theses four posts first round-up here, the second round-up here, the third round-up here, the fourth round-up here and the fifth round-up here. Below you can find his most recent tests.

The Last Word – Roles of camera and raw developer in determining color

It’s not all in the raw developer. As an example, let’s imagine that a Sony a7RIV sees two spectra that resolve to different colors as the same. No profile will be able to tell which of those spectra produced which set of values in the raw file, and the two different colors will look like the same color in the final image. Now let’s imagine that a Nikon Z7 sees two other different-color spectra as the same, but the Sony sees them as different. The Sony and the Nikon cameras will not produce the same colors from a scene containing the spectra above.

The Last Word – a7RIV vs GFX 100 landscape IQ with GigaPixel AI — part 1

I earlier observed that I thought the biggest advantage of the GFX 100 over the GFX 50x was not increased sharpness, but decreased aliasing. There is no aliasing in the crops above that is immediately obvious to me, but I’m sure that there is aliasing there, and one of the functions of aliasing is to turn high spatial frequency hard-to-see small details into lower frequency easier-to-see — but wrong — details. That may be a partial reason for the Sony images surprising sharpness.

The Last Word – a7RIV vs GFX 100 landscape IQ with GigaPixel AI — part 2

I won’t show you the images because my blog is not set up for files so large, but 2000-pixel-high GigaPixel AI-resampled crops also favor the GFX 100.

The Last Word – Sony a7RIV vs Fuji GFX 100 landscape IQ

It’s closer, but the GFX 100 is still distinctly better.

Why didn’t I use the Sony pixel-shift feature for this scene. I have found that for landscape use in general, that motion artifacts make it unusable. There are some landscape subjects — like roots and rocks — that work fine with pixel shift, but foliage does not, even when you think the wind is still.

The Last Word – Fuji 45 mm f/2.8 on GFX 100

Diffraction is adversely affecting the f/8 image, although not enough to keep that from being an excellent choice for landscapes.

The Last Word – GFX 100 w/ Fuji 45/2.8 vs a7RIV w/ Sigma 35/1.2

The Sigma is excellent here. The Fuji is fine; remember it has a bigger sensor to cover, even though the pitch is the same.

These are both impressive lenses. The Fujifilm combination weighs only 115 grams more than the Sigma/Sony pair, so the Sigma is impressive in its sheer bulk, too.

The Last Word – Image quality effects of format size — example 1

I don’t have any difficulty picking a winner here, and it’s the image directly above. And the Fuji 63 is not the best lens in the Fuji lineup; if I had to rank them, I’d put it next to last. Not that it’s bad, by any means; you can see that above.

DPR just posted an article anointing the a7RIV as the best landscape camera. I would quarrel with that. They didn’t consider the GFX 100, but I think they should have done so.

The Last Word – Image quality effects of format size — example 2

Again, we have the same clear winner.

ZY Optics release the Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens with extended working distance
Shenyang China, Nov 25, 2019 – Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) have released a new Super Macro Lens for full frame cameras, the Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5x Super Macro Lens and it features a wide magnification range and a very long working distance.

Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens has a wide magnification range (from 1X to 5X) allowing photographers to capture subjects at different sizes. Users no longer need to DIY or use any extension tubes to reach high magnification shooting. The lens is also designed to have one of the longest working distance for ANY super macro lens. The closest working distance at 5x magnification is 3.93” (10cm) and 10.7” (27.2cm) at 1x magnification. This working distance is so much longer than traditional macro lenses in the market. Photographers can now start shooting macro objects without getting too close and scare them away. The extended working distance also implies lighting can get to the subjects easier. It is also more friendly to use on video shooting. This new super macro lens also has a near telecentric performance which is a big advantage when it comes to macro image stacking photography or industrial usage.

The new 1x-5x Super Macro lens incorporates a 12 elements in 8 groups structure which delivers impressive resolution from corners to corners. The chromatic aberration is also controlled to the minimum (APO design). Weighing merely 1.65 lbs (750g) and 6.7cm long, it is a perfect companion for both wildlife or indoor lab shooting. It is relatively compact in its class which allows photographers to capture extremely fine subjects or patterns with different sizes. Greater magnification can also be achieved by stacking extension tubes or bellows. The high magnification is extremely useful for scientific purposes. The lens can only be used in macro distances and cannot focus to infinity. A 58mm filter thread is also available.

The enclosure of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability. Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE, Sony Alpha, Pentax K, Sony E, Micro Four Thirds, Fuji X mounts are available.

A free tripod collar and LED ring light are included in the package.

Pricing & Availability

Zhongyi Mitakon 85mm f/2.8 1-5X Super Macro Lens is now available to ship and purchase at ZY Optics authorized resellers and at our official website (http://www.zyoptics.net/). The Recommended Retail price without tax is USD 499/pc .

Eager Shoppers Queue For Opening of Fujifilm’s Flagship UK Store

Eager shoppers queue for opening of Fujifilm’s flagship UK store
Hundreds of photography fans from across the country queued for hours to be the first to set foot inside Fujifilm’s world-first concept store.

Eager shoppers arrived from 5.58am to get a place at the front of the line outside the new store in London’s Covent Garden during its grand opening at 11am this morning (03/12).

The photography giant unveiled its three-story, 7,520 square foot store on Long Acre, featuring living walls, selfie pods and free to use photography studios.

The first customer in line was Lucia Tremonti, from London, who got up in the early hours of the morning to be the first person through the doors. She said:

“It’s really great to be here and I’m so excited to be the first one through the door!”

There were over 400 other customers who queued alongside Lucia to be first to see one-of-a-kind concept store, all travelled far and wide to be there. Number six in the queue came from Devon and was waiting outside the door at 6.15am.

The FUJIFILM House of Photography aims to become the most photographed store in London, a sensory photography playground which puts cameras in the hands of the public to inspire and nourish a love of taking, sharing and printing photos.

Visitors will be able to pick up and play with cameras and receive expert advice as in a traditional retail store, but can also hire free studio space, test out lighting in the Midnight Studio, take their time to create a scrapbook or any photo gifting product, take pictures against the exotic flower bedecked living wall, attend seminars and workshops, get creative in the social studios, and view the Gallery, which will feature monthly-changing exhibits.

Theo Georghiades, FUJIFILM House of Photography Project Leader, said:

“Our new flagship store aims to offer a space where every kind of photographer – from smartphone snappers to professionals – can experience the magic of photo-taking and photo-making. The House of Photography is a world-first for Fujifilm, and has long been part of our vision for how consumers experience the brand – so it was fantastic to see so many visitors share in this today.

“We are thrilled that the general public joined in our excitement – just a look at the queue shows how well received the store has been. Now the House of Photography is open, visitors can expect a space for creative collaboration and photographic excellence that completely subverts the traditional approach to how consumers expect a photography store to look and feel.

“We look forward to welcoming the people of London and beyond to our sensory wonderland, and invite them to challenge their creative limits and create amazing images to share with the world.”

The FUJIFILM House of Photography will be open seven days a week, with late 8pm closing times on Friday and Saturday nights.

The first floor marries photographic creativity, social interaction and knowledge sharing with a number of free-to-use social studios, open-plan and collaborative studio spaces available for visitors to use free of charge. The floor is also home to a Gallery space with an exclusive exhibition of photographs of David Bowie by renowned photographer Markus Klinko, on display until the end of December. From January, the Gallery will celebrate Fujifilm’s long-standing partnership with WaterAid.

At basement level, club members will also be able to relax and unwind in a dedicated lounge space, a social setting and club for professionals and Fujifilm enthusiasts. Whether discussing ideas over a coffee or hiring the dedicated studio, this unique photographic club is designed for collaboration and socialising between the most creative and innovative minds in the industry.

Fujifilm has opened its first ever concept store not just to celebrate the art of photo-taking on digital and instant cameras, but to free memories trapped in smartphones and eternalise photos with printing services, including canvasses, mugs and tote bags.

The FUJIFILM House of Photography opened to the public at 11am on Tuesday 3 December, and can be found at 8-9 Long Acre, WC2.
