VILTROX 85mm f/1.8 a Surprisingly Good Value

The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 outperformed expectations in Optical Limits’ testing. A lot of good things have been said about the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, but now we have the numbers to back up the hype. Even Optical Limits sounds convinced in their conclusion:

The Viltrox PFU RBMH 85mm f/1.8 STM is an attractive medium tele lens for Fujifilm cameras. It is sharp across the image field – especially at medium aperture settings – and it doesn’t show any substantial weakness across the other characteristics either. Lateral CAs are low as are image distortions. There is a bit of vignetting at f/1.8 but it’s nothing out of the ordinary (on an APS-C sensor at least). A very positive aspect is the quality of the bokeh. Image highlights are nicely rendered at f/1.8 and the blur in the focus transition zones is very creamy. Bokeh fringing (LoCA) is present at large-aperture settings but that’s hardly surprising.

The build quality feels very “tanky” due to the all-metal design. Pro photographers may miss weather-sealing … Viltrox managed to implement an autofocus motor (STM = stepping motor). The speed is decent but action photography is a bit out of scope…

It is quite surprising than Viltrox was capable of designing and manufacturing such a mature product as their first shot into the market. …if you can’t or don’t want to pay the premium price for a Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 LM R WR, the Viltrox lens is a worthy candidate for your shopping list.

Has Fujifilm Lost its Way?

DPRTV asked what happened to Fujifilm “Kaizen” in their latest video, which Jordan had to save from being ripped apart by inserting an update acknowledging that Fujifilm did add gimbal support in their latest firmware. While Fujifilm hasn’t been adding features as rapidly as they did in the past they are aggressively pursuing Sony’s AF crown, because that is the only area where Sony has a lead at this time.

So do AF improvements fall under Kaizen? I believe they do because better AF can fundamentally change how a camera is used and it can help bridge the gap between two generations. Sure Fujifilm promised their new film simulation would come to all the cameras that can support it, but Fujifilm has never been quick about making these kinds of changes. It took Fujifilm quite a while to add 4k recording to the X-Pro2. It could take even longer to add new film simulations because even though their cameras are very similar the sensors are going to have slightly different characteristics due to thermal constraints and there might be some storage limitations to work around.

Fujifilm will eventually catch up to Sony’s AF technology, but how long it will take largely depends on the amount of resources Fujifilm dedicates to the endeavor, which is likely why most of our bigger updates have brought AF improvements. The next generation Fujifilm X-T4 should provide us with a jump in AF performance compared to previous generation cameras with at least a new processor and probably a new or tweaked sensor being required for the leaked specs. 2020 is going to be an interesting year for Fujifilm cameras and Kaizen.

Fujifilm X-T4, X100V, and X-T200 Details

Since I posted additional details in the leak from Nokishita earlier today other sites have magically announced the Fujifilm X-T200 is coming in addition to the X-T4 and X100V. The fact that these cameras are coming sooner rather than later is verified 100% through my sources.

Less verifiable details are (because they come from unverifiable sources)

X-T4 details
It should be about 1/3 of an inch thicker and about 5-6oz heavier.
6k60p and 10-bit internal
Anamorphic Ratio Support
Probably fully articulating flippy screen like the S1H
IBIS

X100V
New lens
New back screen design (verified that they tried a few designs)
New Hybrid Viewfinder

XT200
XA7 like

As I said before these cameras are in the hands of X photographers so there will be more leaks to come, but all of the leaks that have occurred before hitting X Photographer’s hands or when getting their input came from our site.

2020 should prove to be one of Fujifilm’s most aggressive years as they try to beat back Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras to take on Sony and I hope to have more GFX news soon for those that are asking, but as of right now there isn’t much on the horizon unless people at high levels in Fujifilm are being left out of the loop.
