Fujifilm X-H2/X-T4/Full Frame and More – During House of Photography Interview With Marketing Manager Andreas Georghiades

The Fujicast celebrated its first anniversary at Fujifilm House of Photography with a podcast that includes Fujifilm’s Marketing Manager Andreas Georghiades. You can listen to the interview below if you have an hour or you can get my notes from the interview below.

General Q&A

  • Asked whether video will replace photos in the future
    • You really have to shoot video with photos when doing weddings because pay has come down and expectations are high
    • You should see some 8k cameras this year that are 32MP that could be used to pick out images for photography, but the mindset is very different so this likely won’t become the norm.
    • Exposure is also very different
  • What is the obsession with APS-C
    • There isn’t an obsession it is the best balance for size, weight, image quality, etc…
    • Fujifilm has GFX which is better
    • Fujifilm doesn’t really like the term “full frame” because it isn’t useful anymore beyond marketing
    • If you want smaller and lighter than a DSLR go X mount if you want high megapixel big sensor performance go GFX
    • Other mirrorless full-frame cameras aren’t that much smaller or lighter than DSLR’s
  • What is the future for mirrorless
    • Fujifilm prefers mirrorless for the size and weight advantages
    • AF speed is always getting better and smarter with mirrorless
    • The UK market sells more mirrorless than DSLRs
    • It’s hard to convert sports like the Olympics because they are invested in very expensive glass, but the technology is there to outperformance DSLRs
  • Fujifilm Professional Services how will it get better and win people over
    • They are struggling to get a pan European agreement
    • UK has had FPS for 3 years now
    • The UK has great service because it has a service center which allows for a 48-72hr turnaround, but the rest of Europe doesn’t have service centers so cameras have to be sent to the UK
    • It’s hard to get turn around time down in Europe at this time but Fujifilm continues to work at it
  • What would make for a good leap going forward for professionals? The question asker would like good GPS data and time in their file.
    • 5G sim cards in cameras for uploading to cloud directly for backup would be nice
    • A Proper flip screen because it is useful for when you’re filming
    • IBIS in X-T body (Which we know is coming)
  • Most memorable shoot
    • A luxurious wedding where the couple constantly complained and the bride refused to cut the cake because it was the wrong shade of pink.
    • Kevin Mullins had an old women die while she was shooting
  • Go Pro now has hyper smooth how hard would this be to put in Fujifilm cameras?
    • This is electronic stabilization which is what the X-T200 uses now
    • It’s unlikely digital stabilization could be added via firmware update
  • Do you feel the need to leave your geographical area to take photos?
    • Some think the hardest thing is to photograph your home town for a personal project
    • You don’t have to go far to make an interesting story
  • Will Fujifilm add more simulations to copy more popular film stocks like Portra or Fuji 400H
    • For legal reasons they can’t do the third party films
    • Classic Neg was going to be more Reala based but it ended up being more Superia from 70’s/80’s
    • Engineers are always being challenged to do more, but it is really up to them
  • Fujifilm X-T3  firmware update for Classic Neg?
    • Do not know if it is going to come
    • Historically Fujifilm has been good about adding features
    • The firmware team is pretty small and maybe they will get around to adding Classic Neg, multishot, bracketing, etc.. during a lul in work, but right now they are focused on new things
    • He doesn’t know if it is or isn’t happening one way or another
    • They have a very flat structure, which gives them a lot of access
    • You can always follow the rumor sites
  • When asked about X-H2 being canceled for X-T4
    • Prepared and rehearsed answer “The problem with talking about rumors is like talking about your next ex-wife, you’re currently with someone so just enjoy being with that person and do not talk about the future.”
  • Lots of deals at the moment should I wait
    • If you’re taking stills get an X-T3, but if you want video with a smaller kit get the X-H1
    • 4 is an unlucky number in Asia so why are they calling it X-T4

Fiscal Year 2020/3 (April 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020) – Overall Decline Even With Strong Fujifilm GFX 100 and X-Pro3 Sales

Every company is experiencing a decline in photography sales. Even Instax isn’t immune and has declined. Trade wars and the taxes related to them haven’t helped consumers or companies either, which helped contribute to this bad quarter. While entry-level camera sales have also continued doing poorly the Fujifilm GFX 100 and X-Pro3 are selling well.

In the photo imaging business, revenue decreased due to such factors as declined sales of photographic paper and inventory adjustments of instant photo systems at some U.S. retailers in the first half of the fiscal year. In instant business, the sales was affected by a decrease in demand after the consumption tax increase in Japan. In the U.S. and Europe, though sell-in decreased to adjust market inventory in Q3, sell-through at main retailers increased during the year-end shopping season including Xmas compared to the previous year. We are aiming to expand sales mainly with attractive new products such as instax mini LiPlay and instax mini Link, a printer for smartphones.

In the electronic imaging business, revenue decreased from the previous fiscal year mainly due to a decline in the sales of entry-level mirrorless digital cameras under severe market conditions. The sales were solid for FUJIFILM GFX100, a mirrorless digital camera equipped with a large format sensor with the world’s highest 102 million pixels resolution, and FUJIFILM X-Pro3, a flagship model of the X series launched in November 2019. We are aiming to expand sales of new products such as FUJIFILM X-T200 to be launched this month.

In the optical device business, revenue decreased, reflecting a declined demand for various industrial use lenses such as on-vehicle lenses due to the economic slowdown in China. Fujifilm is enhancing a line-up of new products for business growth, such as FUJIFILM PROJECTOR Z5000, which combined optical technologies of FUJINON Lenses, and 4K Premier series, the world’s first 4K‐compatible broadcast lens with an AF function to be launched in March 2020.

In the Imaging Solutions segment, though revenue decreased compared to the previous fiscal year, and operating income also decreased compared to the previous fiscal year due to such factors as a decline in revenue and effect of exchange rate, we will enhance the sales further by providing products with competitive advantages utilizing our unique technologies, and by running effective promotions to achieve a performance target.

In the Imaging Solutions segment, consolidated revenue amounted to ¥266.1 billion same period of the previous fiscal year).

(down 12.4% from the Operating income amounted to ¥27.4 billion (down 42.8% from the same period of the previous fiscal year).

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Titanium Top Plate Fit and Finish Issues Found

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 has suffered through a lot of criticism and it looks like there may be more to come. A few months ago someone mentioned in passing some fit and finish issues they had with the X-Pro3 so I started searching images on google and didn’t come across much of anything and it was an early camera so I figured it was a one-off and dropped my search.

Today there was a thread started in the DPR forums by someone that received not one but two dura silver x-pro3 that had a slight defect in the titanium around the viewfinder, which could potentially become a big problem if it compromised the viewfinder. I then narrowed my search and still did not find much, but the author found some examples, which he linked to which gave me a third camera to look at and I found some additional separation.

DC.Fever‘s X-Pro3 launch post exhibited the problem all along back in October 2019. The first two crops above demonstrate the “separation” around the viewfinder, but the third post shows some separation of the top plate above the lens mount too. Titanium is not an easy metal to work with and the problems seem to only exist with Dura Silver cameras time so maybe Fujifilm has a problem with their Dura Silver manufacturing line or it could also be that the Dura Black coating is a little thicker and better at hiding slight imperfections.

If this problem is truely widespread I am sure we will hear about it from Fujifilm, but the dura X-Pro3 cameras seem to be shipping in low volume so it may take a while. The serial numbers of the cameras the DPR poster received had serial numbers in the 94 range ending in 2000-4000, which might indicate an ongoing issue, but let’s hope it isn’t a widespread problem.

Fujifilm X-T3: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

L-Plate Overview Really Right Stuff camera body plates are all custom designed for each camera body and precision machined from solid blocks of 6061-T6 aluminum. Fully compatible with any 1.5″ standard dovetail (RRS standard) quick-release system, our plates feature precisely contoured anti-twist flanges for a perfect fit that prevents twisting between the camera and our plate.

Really Right Stuff camera L-plates feature two dovetail mounting surfaces in the shape of an L; one on the bottom of your camera, and one on the left-hand side. This additional mounting option allows you to quickly change between landscape and portrait orientations while minimizing the need to recompose your shot, saving you time and hassle. Also, an L-plate keeps your gear centered directly above the tripod’s apex which helps maintain the best stability possible.

All of our quick-release plates utilize a custom machined ¼”-20 threaded, captive-style mounting screw that threads into the tripod mounting socket of your camera body.

As part of a modular system, this conventional base plate still functions as a traditional camera mounting plate, but also has the added flexibility of accepting a separate dedicated vertical L-component to create a fully modular L-plate with two dovetail mounting surfaces. You can purchase the dedicated vertical L-component as a separate add-on, or as a set package with the base plate.

Product Guarantee: All Really Right Stuff brand products are guaranteed to the original purchaser to be free of defects in materials or workmanship for five (5) years from the date of purchase. Product will be repaired or replaced at our option.
