Photons to Photos: Fujifilm X-Pro3 Beats Sony a7III Low Light PDR Performance

It looks like Fujifilm figured out a better way to tweak their PDR performance in the Fujifilm X-Pro3 over the X-T3 even though the cameras use the same processor and sensor. We may never know what exactly they did to get such a large jump in PDR performance, but Photons to Photos is an independent group that is reporting the results, which you can manipulate here. The most shocking thing about the results is that they match the Sony a7III.

If this is simply a firmware tweak and not due to better thermal characteristics or something like that than I hope to see this improvement in a future X-T3 update. The Fujifilm X-T4 is right around the corner and it might even offer a bigger jump in performance. Maybe APS-C hasn’t come close to reaching the limits of its performance yet. The next few months will be interesting ones.

Bill Claff from PTP said on DPR Forums

“The X-Pro3 appears to have improved PDR but it is an illusion.

It’s well known that Fuji implements the ISO setting in an unusual way.
In this case they have given ISO 320 to ISO 12800 an addition 1 stop boost.

Fuji uses a proprietary Exif tag called “Raw Exposure Bias” to indicate how much they have shifted the raw data from “standard”.

Adjusted in Excel for Raw Exposure Bias we see that the X-Pro3 and X-T3 are essentially identical. (They shift to dual conversion gain at a slightly different point).”

But the fact of the matter is that ISO has long been arbitrary in the world of digital photography so how a company registers results doesn’t matter as much as real-world performance. Applying gain vs applying digital gain has been seen as the same for years by photographers that look at final results. The gain shift is likely where the additional performance comes from and probably can’t be applied via a firmware update.

Lok: Inside Fujifilm Factory GFX100

Last year Lok visited Fujifilm’s factory in Japan last year where he helped assemble an X-H1 and failed, but he also got a look at the GFX100. This is a similar factory tour to 1, 2, and 3. Lok was very late to release his video and it is probably because of the embargo. There were quite a few tours at the time and a few gave us a glimpse of the GFX100 unintentionally, but Lok waited. Below are excerpts from his visit:

  • The video starts with all the parts of the GFX100 laid out for the press
  • Some of the manual assembly of the GFX100 is shown after the parts
  • Then Fujifilm has the press try to put the skin on a X-H1 and the Fujifilm rep does it in 1 min 10 sec and lock was by far the slowest
  • They spend a lot of time making sure the senor assembly is clean, which takes a lot of time
  • They use a green-colored light when cleaning glass lens elements to see the specs on it
  • Lok then takes a try at cleaning an element and he doesn’t make much progress, but Fujifilm gives him a pass

DPRTV: Fujifilm XF35 vs XC35mm – Same Performance For Half The Price?

The Fujifilm XF35 and XC35mm are basically identical lenses and even Fujifilm admits it, but it is half the price so DPRTV wanted to compare the two lenses to make sure:

  • Fujinon XF35mm f/1.4 a bit slow to focus
  • Fujinon XF35mm f/2 and XC35mm f/2 have basically the same optical formula
  • Fujinon XF35mm f/2 and XC35mm f/2 focus at about the same speed
  • A Little LOCA on both lenses that is identical
  • Bokeh is identical
  • Identical sun stars at f/16
  • No difference in colors
  • No differences in skin tones
  • Fujifilm says they are the same and they are
  • The XC is plastic build quality and does not have weather or dust sealing
  • XF is a little smoother and well dampened plus has an aperture ring
  • XF comes with a hood and XC does not
