Technical Analysis: Fujifilm GFX, GF45-100mm, Color, and More

Jim Kasson published more testing with the Fujifilm GFX100 after our last post. Below are quotes and links to all of his great technical testing that he makes available to the public completely free of charge. This time around he discusses color calibration and how the great Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED compares to the Fujinon GF45-100mmF4 R LM WR.

The Last Word – Visuals of GFX 100 strobe profile differences

All come from the DPR Studio Scene for the GFX 100, so the subject matter will be familiar to many of you. I boosted the brightness a bit using the Exposure tool in Lightroom. All of the images got the same boost, except for the LumaRiver reproduction style profile, which needed more than a stop extra. I white balanced to the bottom of the gray square in the middle of the image.

The Last Word – Camera differences in color profile making

I expected the reproduction profiles to be distinctly more accurate than the other profiles. in all cases. That didn’t happen in the case of the GXF 100, where the reproduction profiles were a small improvement in accuracy over ACP and ASP.

The Last Word – Chromaticity shifts with the a7RIV, Z7, and GFX 100

In the yellows, blues, and cyans, the GFX shifts take their general direction the same way as the Z7, but the shifts are more pronounced for the Fuji.

The Last Word – Designing color profiles for strobe lighting

If you are a seasoned color pro, this will be all that you need. If you’re not, don’t worry. You don’t have to understand it all. I’ll be going through the most significant data and giving you explanations if you scroll down further.

The Last Word – CC24 vs CCSG CIELab values

But today I discovered that, even with the same 45/0 lighting and a spectrophotometer, the CC24 patches on the CCSG target don’t match the CC24 patches on the actual CC24 target.

The Last Word – Profiling a GFX 100 with X-rite CC calibration, part 2

Yesterday I posted about my experiences using the X-Rite CC24 and CCSG targets and X-Rite’s Color Checker Camera Calibration program in diffuse illumination. Before that test, I made a profile with the CCSG target in direct sunlight at a 45-degree angle to the target. The colors were overly chromatic.

The Last Word – Profiling a GFX 100 with X-rite CC camera calibration

That also shows what’s going on. Adobe makes errors in both desaturated and more-saturated directions, but the X-rite program seems to go for more saturation almost all the time.

It looks like the X-rite profile making program is not trying to be accurate, but is going for a “look” they think you’ll like.

The Last Word – Field Curvature on the Fuji 45-100/4

The prime is better.

I am amazed at how well the 45-100 did in comparison tot he 45/2.8 in this test.

The Last Word – Fuji 45-100/4 vs 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S, Siemens star, part 3

This is part 3 of a comparison of he Fuji 45-100/4 on the GFX 100 with the 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S on the Z7  at 45mm, 63 mm, and 100mm for the Fuji lens, and 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm for the Nikkor. This post will look at the 70/100mm shots.

The Last Word – Fuji 45-100/4 vs 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S, Siemens star, part 2

This is part 2 of a comparison of he Fuji 45-100/4 on the GFX 100 with the 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S on the Z7  at 45mm, 63 mm, and 100mm for the Fuji lens, and 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm for the Nikkor. This post will look at the 50/63mm shots.

The Last Word – Fuji 45-100/4 vs 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S, Siemens star, part 1

The Fuji 45-100/4 that I’ve been testing for the last week is an incredible zoom. It is running very close to, and may surpass, the Fuji 32-64/4, which is the second-best zoom I’ve ever tested. The 24-70/2.8 Nikkor S is the best 24-70 full frame zoom I’ve tested. It seems natural to pit them against each other, even if the resolution of the Z7 is only about 70% of that of the GFX 100. I suppose I could test the new Fuji zoom on a GFX 50S, but since I’ve been using the GFX 100, I don’t have much interest in that camera.

Tales of the X-T4: Tale 1 – Versatile Performance

Fujifilm’s latest promo for the Fujifilm X-T4 very clearly states that the X-T and X-H line are Fujifilm’s top of line professional cameras. This is a change of position from when the X-H1 launched and Fujifilm insisted it was a more professional camera than the X-T line, which consumers rejected. It’s good to see them change their position.

“If the X-H Series is a one-event specialist who trains only for the 100 meters or the shot put or so on, the X-T Series is a decathlete. This is not to say that versatility equates to being “a jack of all trades but master of none”: in fact, the world’s top decathletes are capable of record-level individual performances in one or more events.

Nevertheless, the decathlon wouldn’t be much of a competition if each athlete wasn’t also weak in one or two events. In fact, the decathlon can be described as challenging oneself to see how close one can come to true versatility (mastery of all ten events). Mind you, when it comes to decathletes who can beat the 1980s’ world records of over 8,500 points, all bets are off.”

The Fujifilm X-T4 is looking to be a world-class all-around camera with no weaknesses thanks to its IBIS, newly-developed shutter, feel, durability, and new NP-W235 battery that IBIS requires to reach its maximum potential.

“How fully its design is committed to both still photography and movie recording is demonstrated by its variable-angle touch screen. Its magnesium chassis shows that it has learned from the specialist X-H1 how to stay hard and tough so that it can offer equivalent ruggedness in a more compact camera body. Not even weighty lenses such as the XF200mmF2 can budge it the slightest fraction of an inch. And this in a body that tips the scales at only 600 grams. One sees very few big, tall, and bulky macho men over 2 meters tall among the decathlon world-record holders mentioned above, either―perhaps the pursuit of versatility is premised on a body of balanced proportions.”

TranTixxii Titanium Used in Fujifilm X-Pro3

Nippon Steel Design titanium “TranTixxii®” adopted for the first time in Fujifilm digital cameras
Nippon Steel Corporation (hereafter, Nippon Steel) design titanium “TranTixxii®” is a mirrorless digital camera “FUJIFILM X-Pro3” (hereinafter “X- Pro3 ”) for the first time.

Titanium has material properties such as light weight, high strength, and high corrosion resistance. The X-Pro3 achieves excellent mobility and durability by taking full advantage of the features of this titanium. In addition, it is a design full of luxury that draws out the beautiful color and texture of titanium. Titanium is used on the top and bottom surfaces of the body exterior, where dials and front finder windows are required, where advanced drawing and overhanging technology is required. This time, close cooperation with the processing manufacturer has made it possible to create complex designs that focus on details while maintaining high strength.

“TranTixxii®” can sustain the various colors and tones realized through our proprietary technology over time due to the excellent corrosion resistance and discoloration resistance of titanium. Until now, we have been pursuing functionality, design and moldability while responding to various needs for decorative items such as watches and eyeglasses, golf clubs and buildings. We will continue to utilize the advanced technology of titanium to meet the needs of various applications.

NAB Show Canceled Due To Coronavirus

March 11, 2020

Dear NAB Show community,

As you know, we have been carefully monitoring coronavirus developments both domestically and globally over the past few weeks.

In the interest of addressing the health and safety concerns of our stakeholders and in consultation with partners throughout the media and entertainment industry, we have decided not to move forward with NAB Show in April. We are currently considering a number of potential alternatives to create the best possible experience for our community.

This was not an easy decision. Fortunately, we did not have to make this decision alone, and are grateful to our NAB Show community for engaging with us as we grappled with the rapidly-evolving situation. This Show is as much yours as it is ours, and it is important to us that we move forward together.

For nearly 100 years, NAB Show has provided superior value and the best possible experience for exhibitors and attendees. We knew that if we could not deliver on those expectations, we would not move forward. More importantly, keeping the community safe and healthy is NAB’s highest priority; therefore, we are deferring to the developing consensus from public health authorities on the challenges posed by coronavirus.

We are still weighing the best potential path forward, and we ask you for your patience as we do so. We are committed to exploring all possible alternatives so that we can provide a productive setting where the industry can engage with the latest technology, hear from industry thought leaders and make the game-changing connections that drive our industry forward.

I want to stress that despite our disappointment at how this year’s Show has been impacted by global public health concerns, we are more excited than ever about the future of NAB Show and our relationship with you.

We are grateful for each and every member of our Show community. It is your passion for the industry that makes NAB Show a success year after year, and it is that same passion that will drive us into the future as we look ahead to new possibilities later this year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Gordon H. Smith
President and CEO
