Fujifilm GFX100 Salt Water Exposure: A Very Expensive Lesson

Lensrentals had one of its Fujifilm GFX100 get briefly exposed to saltwater and it was declared DOA by insurance, but of course Lensrentals found a little more value in the unit by making a teardown post, which you can read here. The teardown reveals a few interesting details about the GFX100 and the first big take away for me is that I will be more careful with my GFX100 and the elements in the future.

I think most photographers know how dangerous saltwater can be for a camera, but this light splash of saltwater got disturbingly deep into the GFX100, which is disappointing to me as an owner. This confirms what I have suspected for some time that the GFX100 isn’t as well sealed as the GFX50S was because there are almost no gaskets in the GFX100.

On the plus side, the IBIS unit in the camera is built to last and built correctly along with the huge shutter that isn’t physically mounted to the body at all. The GFX100 should operate problem-free for years to come if it is well cared for. We also now know more details about the GFX100 sensor stack “The sensor stack had three pieces of glass measured at 0.9mm for the top, 1.34mm total for the second sandwich and 1mm glued to the sensor. That’s 3.24mm of total glass thickness for those of you interested, not counting the two air gaps between the glass plates.”

The GFX100 certainly seems to be built like a brick, but I am personally disappointed in the lack of weather sealing in the camera. The seals in the teardown are diminutive in a camera that has enough room to house full-sized screws. Maybe Fujifilm was hoping that the internal volume of the camera would provide additional protection, but from this teardown, it looks like the saltwater wicked up into the delicate parts of the camera via surface tension and capillary action wrecking almost everything. Sure rainwater isn’t as dangerous but why take the change with a $10,000 camera?

NEVER STOP: TV Commercials To Be Released in Japan and The US on August 27th

Fujifilm Group Global Branding Campaign
‘NEVER STOP Healthcare 2020’
TV Commercials to be released in Japan and the US on August 27th

FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is pleased to announce the launch of its ‘NEVER STOP Healthcare 2020’ global branding campaign, which aims to promote widespread awareness of its wide range of healthcare-related business fields in which Fujifilm is now engaged. As COVID-19 wreaks havoc around the world, our ‘NEVER STOP Healthcare 2020’ campaign will communicate the fact that Fujifilm is a comprehensive healthcare company actively combating COVID-19 in the fields of prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and that Fujifilm will NEVER STOP taking on new challenges to protect and enhance the health of people around the world.

To raise awareness of the diversification of Fujifilm’s business portfolio to a wide audience and our determination to NEVER STOP taking on challenges to contribute to the resolution of societal issues, we launched our NEVER STOP global branding campaign in October 2018. In our current campaign we are promoting awareness that Fujifilm has succeeded in moving away from being a primarily photographic company and is now actively engaged and creating new value in a wide array of business fields. The NEVER STOP tagline also conveys our strong determination to communicate to a global audience that Fujifilm will ‘NEVER STOP’ working until all resolvable issues have been eradicated.

On August 27th, a series of TV commercials will be launched in Japan and the US. We also plan to roll out this campaign to Europe, China, India and Australia.

Fujinon XF50mm f/1 R LM WR Press Text Leaked

World’s First F1.0 Autofocus Lens for Mirrorless Cameras
As the world’s first autofocus F1.0 lens made for any mirrorless system, including full-frame, XF50mm F1.0 brings more light to the sensor than any previous XF lens, making it possible for the autofocus to operate at -7EV luminance level. The previous limit of -6EV luminance level was achieved using lenses with a maximum aperture of F1.4, X Series users now have fast and precise low-light autofocus, even in near-darkness. With the added benefits of on-sensor Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), Face/ Eye AF and a powerful DC motor, precise and fast autofocus at shallow depths of field is now a possibility.

Incredibly Shallow Depth-of-Field
The XF50mm F1.0 R WR consists of 12 lens elements in nine groups and also contains one aspherical element and two ED elements to achieve optimum control of spherical aberration. Used at or near to its maximum F1.0 aperture, XF50mmF1.0 R WR can produce an astonishingly narrow depth-of-field. Its precision-engineered, rounded diaphragm produces large, smooth bokeh for a professional look, allowing photographers to create portraits with a striking simplicity and an almost three-dimensional quality with wonderful edge-to-edge sharpness. Photographers can use this new power in selective focus to keep only the subject’s eyes in focus and make captivating close-up character studies. But it’s not just for portraits. Take this lens out onto the street or into a lifestyle session and one can turn cluttered locations into clean backdrops with unrivaled subject separation.

Great in low-light
The very wide maximum aperture on XF50mmF1.0 R WR means there are more options when it comes to making images in low-light conditions. At night, or in darkened interiors, XF50mmF1.0 R WR offers the widest apertures yet seen on an XF lens, allowing more light to be drawn in to make an image. XF50mmF1.0 R WR lens also easily achieves fast shutter speeds that freeze movement and keep ISO settings lower for detail-rich results. Alternatively, combine high ISO settings with the F1.0 aperture for incredible versatility and use in other low-light applications like astrophotography.

Precise Focus
To make the most of its super-shallow depth-of-field, focusing must be precise. As a result, XF50mmF1.0 has a focus ring that is eight times more accurate than any previous XF lens. This makes it possible to change the focus from the minimum focusing distance to infinity very precisely. For this, XF50mm F1.0 R WR uses 120o of rotation in its focusing ring to let users focus manually without error – and achieve accurate focus when using an X Series camera’s Focus Peaking and Focus Assist modes. The 120o of rotation also makes autofocus movements notably precise and deliberate, while the lens’s engineering is designed to minimise focus shift effects when making images.

Weather resistant
This lens is sealed in 11 locations to protect against moisture and dust, as well as being capable of use in temperatures down to -10°C

Atomos Final Ninja V Firmware Released With Fujifilm GFX100 ProResRAW Support

Atomos released a public beta a few weeks ago for the Ninja V with ProResRAW Support. Today they released the final firmware update which you can download here.

Press Release
Atomos final release version for Ninja V to enable large format 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW recording with Fujifilm GFX100, available now for free
August 28, Melbourne, Australia: Atomos is thrilled to be releasing today RAW over HDMI recording with the Fujifilm GFX100 and Ninja V 5” HDR monitor-recorder. The Ninja V will record up to 4Kp30 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW video from the GFX100’s state-of-the-art medium format CMOS sensor. This makes it the world’s first commercially available medium format RAW video shooting system available to buy.

The GFX100, Ninja V and ProRes RAW gives filmmakers an entirely new way to shoot. The look of large format video has recently become very popular in Hollywood, with the ability to use high quality lenses with different technical characteristics. This feel can now be achieved more affordably with the GFX100 and Ninja V, and at the same time, fully harnessing the power of RAW. The resulting images have amazing depth, detail and the maximum latitude for post-production — optimal for HDR finishing or to give greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709).

Together, the GFX100 and Ninja V create a large format camera system that is intuitive to use and light enough to hand hold, place in tight corners or mount onto gimbals. TV dramas, indie films, corporate productions, documentaries and even motion pictures can now utilise the GFX100 and Ninja V to get the distinctive look that is set apart from regular full-frame shots.

Atomos CEO Jeromy Young said: “I’m delighted that the Fujifilm GFX100 with our Ninja V delivers extraordinary large sensor RAW footage that was previously unattainable at this size and cost. It continues to be our mission to democratize filmmaking, giving cinematographers the option to own a RAW shooting large sensor video camera that’s in a class of its own. Our HDR technology, combined with Fujifilm’s long history of color excellence and Apple’s ProRes RAW codec are a winning combination. I look forward to seeing films, TV shows and commercials shot with this amazing setup.”

The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the GFX100 RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, magnify or engage peaking check focus for each angle and make any adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

As an alternative to RAW, the Ninja V can also record 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx video up to 4Kp60 from the HDMI output of the GFX100. For reliability and affordability, ProRes RAW or standard video files are recorded to AtomX SSDmini SATA drives in the Ninja V.

The Ninja V and RAW recording also opens up the camera to the wider Atomos ecosystem for enhanced on-set HDR and SDR monitoring. A video signal can be output from the Ninja V to the Atomos Sumo19, or soon-to-be-released Neon line of production monitors, for perfect HDR viewing by directors, clients, focus-pullers or anyone else who needs access to an accurate view on-set.

ProRes RAW is now firmly established as the new standard for RAW video capture with Fujifilm joining our ever-growing number of cameras outputting RAW over HDMI. ProRes RAW combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. This format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, and less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported, and manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. ProRes RAW is supported in Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere and Grass Valley Edius, along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront and FilmLight Baselight.

The GFX100 and Ninja V will gain the ability to record ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp30 via firmware update 2.01 from Fujifilm already available, and the free AtomOS 10.53 update for Ninja V is available now at the Atomos website.
