Fujifilm Closing Four U.S. Photo Equipment Plants and Cutting 400 Jobs

Petapixel reports that Fujifilm plans to close four of its five Greenwood, South Carolina manufacturing plants that produce printing plates, inks, papers, and disposable cameras due to declining demand. Plus 400 positions will be eliminated by fall 2022.

The five-plant campus was opened in 1988 and represents an investment of $1.8 billion dollars and currently employees 500 people. The campus represents over 2.5 million square feet of productions space and the announcement will cut the facility down to 1/5th of its current capacity. QuickSnap recyclable cameras, inkjet photographic paper, color photographic paper, and digital printing plates are all produced here.

Employees were told of the announcement this morning before the public announcement. Fujifilm’s official statement is “Market economic trends and a declining demand for many of the products manufactured in Greenwood challenged us to focus on how we adapt our efforts to continue to build a global, sustainable approach for Fujifilm.”

New Fujifilm GFX Prime Rumor and Contact Request

Before I drop the first rumor I have received in a while I want to remind readers that I cannot help you sort things out if you do not include reply information on the contact form. Almost 100% of the emails I receive from readers are anonymous with no way to follow up and some will keep sending msgs about how they are upset I haven’t replied to help them out. If this doesn’t apply to you great, but for those that want to be anonymous and would like to build a rapport please put a code in your email so I can track if this is your first rumor or not. Sadly I haven’t heard from my long-time rumor dropper in almost a year and I hope they can reach out soon and all is well.

The Rumor
Sorry about the above but this rumor is from a new source that did not identify themselves, but since I haven’t shared a rumor in a while and this one sounds plausible here it is… Fujifilm will release a Fujinon GF56mm f/5.6 R WR soon. Possibly along with the new GFX that we know is coming and it is my belief that this lens will be a more affordable compact Fujifilm GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR. The GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR is a great compact lens, but Fujifilm could build a true pancake lens with the above specs.

To be clear my speculation begins around where I said my belief since the rumor was vague and I currently have no way of checking any msgs that might come in about it later. Either way, this should be a great year for GFX, and with Fujifilm pushing the GFX line to be smaller and more compact, almost anything is possible. We know GFX has been great for Fujifilm and I think we will see the lineup grow quite a bit this year and next.

Major Fujifilm GFX100, GFX100S, and X-S10 Firmware Updates Released

Fujifilm GFX100 Ver.4.00 – Download Here

In firmware Ver.4.00, the menu structure has been changed and some functions have been renamed. Particularly, the movie setting menu has undergone major changes due to the expansion of setting items, and some of the settings will revert back to the default value accordingly.

Regarding the details, download the “GFX100 Manual Ver.4.00” from our website.

GFX100 Manual Ver.4.00: EnglishFrançaisDeutsEspañolItalianoNederlandPolskiSvenskaNorskDanskPусскийSuomi中文简中文繁體한국어ภาษาไทยArabic

The firmware update Ver.4.00 from Ver.3.02 incorporates the following issues:

Improved autofocus performance to the same level as “GFX100S”
The new firmware updates the camera’s autofocus algorithm to the latest version to boost AF speed and Face/Eye-detection performance, enhancing AF accuracy even in portrait photography that involves subject movements. The ability to track a moving subject will also be improved, making it possible to maintain an accurate focus on a subject that is moving away from the camera.

Coordinated control of in-body and optical image stabilization mechanisms
The new firmware enables coordinated control of the camera’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and a lens’s optical image stabilization (OIS). Image stabilization is applied with optimum correction based on the two mechanisms’ acceleration, frequency detected by gyro sensors and the amount of camera shakes to minimize motion blur even when shooting handheld. This enhances the image stabilization function of GF lenses featuring OIS such as FUJINON Lens GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro or the FUJINON Lens GF45-100mmF4 R LM OIS WR with additional 0.5-stop.

Addition of the Film Simulation “Nostalgic Neg.”
The new firmware adds the Film Simulation “Nostalgic Neg.,” characterized by colors and tones reminiscent of the “America New Color,” which emerged in the 1970s to advocate the potential of color expressions to the world and established color photography as the mainstream style for photographic fine arts. The style combines “soft tonality” with “high saturation” at the same time and applies warm amber to highlights to soften the look while maintaining fine details and pop colors in shadows for lyrical looks.

Improvement of shutter speed setting for TTL slow sync flash shooting
In P and A mode, this firmware makes the slowest shutter speed slower than 1/8 sec. for the shooting used in a scene where relatively long exposure is required (ex. a flash shooting with night view background). In case the shutter speed setting is AUTO, the shutter speed becomes max. 4 sec in P mode and max. 30 sec. in A mode.

Other added functions and operational improvements
1) The level of “clarity” can be set in the range from -5 to +5. The “tone curve” can be adjusted in the increment of 0.5 stop for both highlights and shadows.
2) The “focus limiter” function is added to specify any focusing range. Choose the default focusing distance or select it from the specified range.
3) Pictures can be enlarged in the magnification of 1x, 2x, 4x or 8x in playback. There is also an option to select the magnification used in the previous playback (from center).
4) Function button can be assigned to switch “shooting mode” between P, S, A and M modes.
5) The front and rear command dials can be set to rotate in a reverse direction.
6) The number of items in the Q menu can be selected from 4, 8, 12 or 16 for both stills and video. The items to display in the Q menu are customizable.
7) The Q button can be assigned as a function button.
8) The camera stays ON even when an SD card is removed.
9) Electronic image stabilization is available while shooting video.
10) It corrects camera shake that occurs when shooting video handheld. (1.1x crop when this mode is turned on)
11) Live View can be enlarged even while shooting video.
12) The Focus Check Lock can now also be set to ON/OFF to maintain focus check or not when starting to shoot video.
13) Video recorded in the SD card can be backed up to the SD card in another card slot.
14) The elapsed video recording time can be displayed on the LCD for checking.
15) The AF area size can be changed while shooting video.
16) Video files recorded with F-log can be played back in conversion equivalent to BT.709.
17) Added White Balance / ISO metadata to RAW footage, output to Atomos Ninja V HDR Monitor Recorder via HDMI. The footage is recorded as Apple ProRes RAW files and White Balance / ISO can be adjusted in Final Cut Pro.

Fix of minor bugs.

Regarding the detail, download the “X-S10 New Features Guide[2.00]” from our website.

New Features Guide: EnglishFrançaisDeutschEspañolItalianoNederlandPolskiSvenskaNorskDanskPусскийSuomi中文简中文繁體한국어ภาษาไทยArabic

Support for tethered shooting
The new firmware adds tethered shooting capability, which can be used by connecting the X-S10 to a computer installed with either “Capture One”*1, “Tether Shooting Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®” or “FUJIFILM X Acquire.” The tethered shooting function can be used both via the USB cable connection and also wirelessly over a Wi-Fi network.

*1 Today, Capture One is not compatible with the X-S10 tether shooting function. The Capture One is to be upgraded. For detail, visit the website below. URL: https://www.captureone.com/en/resources/tech-specs/camera-support-fujifilm

Firmware enables remote control functionality from gimbal via USB communications
With this firmware update, combining the X-S10 with a compatible gimbal that supports remote control functionality will allow users to start / stop video recording, specify exposure settings for video (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation), and make manual focus adjustments. Guilin Zhishen Information Technology Co., Ltd (ZHIYUN) has announced the intention of offering compatible products for the new X-S10 firmware update.

Function-specific locking
The new firmware adds a Lock option to the settings for buttons and dials in the Setup menu. By enabling the function, the unintended changes of dial / button settings will be prevented.

30 sec. in A mode.

Display of “IP ADDRESS” in Setup Menus > CONNECTION SETTING > INFORMATION is added.

In case of using the FUJIFILM X Webcam the option in the menu changes from “X WEBCAM” to “USB TETHER SHOOTING AUTO”. Also, the setting screen displayed on a PC can be used.

The phenomenon is fixed that the position of the spot metering is fixed on the center without reflecting the postion of the focus area in case the focus mode is MF and the metering mode the spot.

The phenomenon is fixed that an image cannot be played back with a specified file name created by the EDIT FILE NAME function.

Fix of minor bugs.
