Photons to Photos: Fujifilm X-E4 Results Published

Photons to Photos published its results for the Fujifilm X-E4 and you can manipulate the results here. Fujifilm has designed the X-E4 sensor to perform similarly to the X-S10 with a base ISO of 160 and dual conversion gain at ISO 500. The recently released Fujifilm X-T30II probably has the same design.

TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 For Fujifilm GFX Announced

TTArtisan has announced its TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 for GFX and you can get one for yourself from Amazon. This lens covers the GFX shockingly well and I love it on G and X Mount. If you want to use this lens on your G and X mount bodies get the M mount edition w adapter, but if you are just going to shoot it on GFX then get it for G Mount. I also included some of my own samples below or you can check out my Instagram.

Description

  • Compatible With Sony E-Mount, Nikon Z-Mount, Canon R-Mount, Leica L-Mount, Leica M-Mount and  Fuji GFX-Mount cameras.
  • Sets of Achromatic Doublets
Dispersion is a common optical phenomenon, especially in fast lenses. 4 sets of Achromatic Doublets are used in M 90mm f1.25 lens to significantly improves the chromatic aberration and the resolution performance, presenting excellent image quality. The spherical aberration of achromatic doublets is better than singlets.
  • First Choice for Portrait and Close-up Beauty
Its high speed and the unique aesthetics of its depth of focus make this telephoto lens the first choice for portrait photographers. The angle of view is 27 degrees. It highlights the main body while avoiding the suffocating sense of space compression caused by super telephoto lens.
  • Smooth Bokeh with Fast F/1.25 Maximum Aperture
Extremely fast f/1.25 maximum aperture affords notable control over depth of field for selective focus shooting, and also benefits handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. The smooth transition between the focus object and the bokeh creates a dreamy picture with an ideal depth of field and fascinating background blur.
  • Lens Hood Reverse Attaching
Handy reversible design allows you to attach the lens hood in reverse for easy storage. With the extended lens end, it can protect the lens from moisture, wind-blown debris and impact.
  • Bring with Tripod Mounting Hole
Due to the size and weight, the 90mm F1.25 manual focus lens fits on a tripod for a more stable shot, so there is a tripod mounting hole at the bottom of the lens.
  • A Clicked Aperture Ring
The aperture ring is stepped with the right amount of resistance and click, marking on full stops from f/1.25 to f/16.
  • Support Macular Linkage
Support the macular focusing of Leica/Voigtlander/Minolta and other paraxial m-port cameras.

MegaDealZone (27th-29th), Fujifilm Savings Extended (27th-Jan 23rd), and GFX50R Discontinuation

B&H Photo launched its Mega Deal Zone Savings today with over 1200 items discounted and it will run through the 29th. Fujifilm Also extended their savings until January 23rd. There aren’t many GFX50R left so if you want one grab one of the last new units left since retailers like B&H Photo have marked the camera as discontinued since selling out.

GFX50R Discontinuation Thoughts
I have been thinking about why Fujifilm discontinued the GFX50R without a clear replacement in sight and it probably comes down to supply chain shortages and how Fujifilm is increasingly marketing its cameras to DSLR users. The Fujifilm GFX50R sold very well especially when it was on sale, but GFX50S II is a more attractive camera for DSLR photographers new to Fujifilm like the GFX100S was for many that didn’t like the GFX100.

With the current supply chain shortages, it is probably smart to target new customers over existing ones, to sell more glass, so Fujifilm likely cannibalized the sensors allocated for the GFX50R to produce more GFX50SII cameras. If I am correct I hope Fujifilm decides to produce GFX cameras with more dials in the future for those of us that prefer classic cameras, if they don’t Leica could canalize users from Fujifilm for a change.

The GFX50S was just about perfect and GFX cameras that have been released since are all a bit flawed operationally for photographers that prefer a classic layout. The GFX50S’ only shortcoming was the heat sink hump that Fujifilm was able to resolve in later cameras. So let’s all hope the next GFX is a great one for fans of classic Fujifilm and classic cameras.

Lens Tips: Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.4 R WR Review

The Fujinon XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR has largely been well-reviewed and received, but it isn’t really an upgrade or replacement for the Fujinon XF35mm f/1.4 R. Lens tips goes a bit against the “norm” in their review, but it seems to be because they prefer clinical glass to glass that has a wow factor that cannot be classified and reproduced E.g. the Leica look. You can read in full here or you can read excerpts from the review below:

Pros:

  • solid, weather-sealed barrel mostly made of metal,
  • excellent image quality in frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • excellent correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
  • moderate distortion,
  • very low astigmatism,
  • out-of-focus areas nice to look at,
  • good performance against bright light,
  • efficient, silent, and accurate autofocus.

Cons:

  • a bit too high vignetting,
  • coma makes itself felt by f/1.4.

The Fujinon XF 35 mm f/1.4 R, presented almost a decade ago, didn’t age well; that’s why, in my opinion, launching a new, fast standard lens was a really good decision.

The new Fujinon XF 33 mm f/1.4 R LM WR seems to be a much better instrument anyway. You get a superior resolution both in the centre and on the edge of the frame, much better corrected chromatic aberration, lower coma and more efficient autofocus. The older standard only prevails when it comes to a tad better distortion correction.
