OpticalLimits: Tokina SZ 8mm F2.8 X Review

Tokina SZ 8mm F2.8 X FISH-EYE: Amazon

Optical Limits published its Tokina SZ 8mm F2.8 X FISH-EYE review and the lens isn’t even available yet, but it sounds like they enjoyed putting the review together. Fujifilm doesn’t have a fish-eye lens of its own, but there are several quality fish-eye lenses available from 3rd party manufacturers. Below is an excerpt from the review or you can view the full review here.

I had quite some fun with the lens out there when producing the sample images – and for most of us, this is what photography is all about. Yes, the Tokina SZ 8mm f/2.8 Fish-Eye isn’t a perfect lens. This is most obvious in low-light situations where soft corners are obvious at large-aperture settings. Some post-processing will be required to reduce the CAs, purple fringing and, maybe, vignetting. Once you stop down, the quality improves substantially. The center is tack sharp anyway and the corners recover nicely at medium aperture settings. The barrel distortion is massive, of course. You could de-fish your images but then why would you want to do so… you can produce aperture artifacts in your images when shooting into the sun, the lens is fairly flare-resistant within its scope.

The build quality is very good thanks to an all-metal construction and smooth controls. However, it’s an all manual lens. Due to the immense depth-of-field, this is nothing to be afraid of normally. The clickless aperture is surely appreciated by video makers. Photographers may not like it as much but yours truly had no problems with this.

CP+ 2022 Tamron Announcements

Tamron released a CP+ 2022 video that you can view below, but it mainly relates to current products on the market. Since Tamron is new to Fujifilm it is interesting to note that they have committed to releasing 3 lenses for X-mount this year out of the 5 lenses they are expected to release from them this year. The lenses we know of are below:

Tamron has been innovative with its mirrorless lens designs and in the video below at 38:45 Tamron made an interesting statement, that dclife translated:

Tamron will continue to listen to the voices of our customers and develop unique lenses that are unique to Tamron. And I would like to incorporate customization functions into all models of future lenses, improving optical performance, further maximizing AF speed, improving operability of zoom ring and focus ring, texture and grip. We would like to make further improvements such as improving the feeling.

In particular, “TAMRON Lens Utility” is still a developing technology, so we would like to hear your voices and requests and add it to new functions.

In addition to improving optical performance and AF performance, future models will be equipped with a lens customization function for all lenses. We are waiting for your requests for lenses and customization functions.

So it seems Tamron is going to make their future lenses programable/customizable, which will be a nice value-added feature. I am sure more mirrorless lens manufacturers will follow in the future as lenses become more digital and integrated with the camera, but Tamron is off to a good start.

First Look Voigtlander NOKTON 23mm F1.2 Aspherical

The first images of the Voigtlander NOKTON 23mm f/1.2 Aspherical have come out and it looks like any other solid mechanical lens, but one interesting point is several Nikon Z mount lenses were also announced and the 23mm lens for Z mount has a significantly different design than the lens for X mount which includes a manual aperture ring on the top. Voigtlander is designing its X-mount lenses to be “ranger finder styled”. This lens was originally supposed to be announced at CP + 2022. Voightlander lenses are available from B&H Photo.
