Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Orders Started Early

The Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary has been listed early on B&H Photo it was expected on October 26th, but that could be the shipment date.

This is the world’s smallest and lightest F2.8 zoom lens designed for APS-C format mirrorless systems at just 2.8 x 2.4 inches (72.2 x 62mm) and 9.2 ounces (260g)*. The lens covers a 15-36mm (35mm equivalent) focal range, with a fast F2.8 constant aperture. Paired with the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary, this duo of lenses covers a 15-75mm (35mm equivalent) range with the same bright F2.8 maximum aperture at a combined weight of under 19.5 ounces (550g).

* As an AF F2.8 zoom lens for mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor. As of October 2023 by SIGMA. Figures are for L-Mount. Additional specifications included in the full press release below.

The SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary uses an aspherical concave lens with a large polarization ratio and high refractive index in the first group, reducing the number of elements in the first group and shortening the overall length. Additionally, a new push-on petal type hood has been developed. Thanks to the new structure with a spring and lever, which is not utilized by any other manufacturer, the hood has been made both thinner and smaller, which also contributes to the overall compactness of the lens.

The optical design of the lens delivers a short 4.6 inch (11.6cm) minimum focusing distance and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 at the wide end, allowing for close-up photography with pleasing background separation. The optical design also minimizes focus breathing, and the stepping motor delivers swift, quiet autofocus during both still and video use.

Thanks to its high optical quality and compact size, the SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary lens is an excellent choice for travelers, adventure photographers, vloggers, content creators, and family photographers who want great image quality when paired with today’s leading lightweight crop-sensor cameras on the three supported mirrorless platforms. Big Fujifilm GFX100S Price Reduction Coming

Fujifilm GFX100S Save $800:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Moment / Adorama

Fujifilm held an event where they announced that they want to make the entry-level GFX100 camera even more affordable so they will be reducing the price by 10,000 RMB on October 23rd. The GFX100S’ price will be reduced from 39,800 to 29,900 RMB, which is a reduction of $5441.84 to $4088.22 USD. They also intend to refund buyers from September to October 22nd according to the report on Weibo.

There is no guarantee that these price adjustments will come to the United States since they were announced in China, but if they do then I would have to imagine that the GFX50SII price could be impacted too. We could also see the current savings of $800 for the GFX100S just become the standard price for the camera going forward we will have to wait and see how the price adjustment in China impacts global prices.

Fujifilm France Manager Interview: GFX, Instax, X100, AI, Third Party Lenses, and More

Phototrend interviewed Frank Bernard, director of the photo division at Fujifilm France about the company’s strategies and ambitions. You can check out bullet points from the translated interview below:

  • Fujifilm is well-positioned for digital and analog snapshot photography
  • GFX100 II and the tilt-shift lenses have been well-received and so were the X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20, and X-T5
  • It’s good the Fujifilm AF can now meet the needs of sports professionals even on the GFX100 II
  • GFX100 II is capable of performing all professional video needs
  • X-H2S is gaining market share but it will need time
  • Fujifilm wants to surround full frame cameras with their APS-C and Medium Format GFX offerings
  • There were other companies making medium format cameras, but the GFX surprised them and consumed the small medium format market and now it is slowly growing that same market
  • Fujifilm will exploit the niche of medium format cameras as much as they can because they believe large sensors should be an alternative to full frame for professionals
  • In France, Fujifilm is on top of the hybrid market they are targeting with 26% of the market over the last 12 months and they consider their flagship camera to be the X-T5 followed by the X-T30II, and X-S20
  • Fujifilm thinks smartphones can be used to accelerate demand for stand-alone cameras even though the collapse of the compact market due to cell phone cameras hurt them
  • Fujifilm isn’t sure that the Instax Pal will catch on, but we will see around the holiday shopping season
  • Fujifilm is a leader in snapshots and portable printers thanks to Instax with Instax Mini 12 being their top camera today
  • The Instax Mini Evo comes in 3rd for the snapshot market
  • X100V demand remains very strong and they aren’t ready to talk about another camera at this time
  • Fujifilm didn’t see the X100V demand coming so it was disruptive, but welcome of course
  • The interview makes it sound like the demand for the X100V has delayed the release of a new camera since the X100V is now 3 years old and Fujifilm has faster refresh cycles typically.
  • Fujifilm is open to rethinking the entry-level market, but if demand is low they will stop production of cameras like the X-T200 and X-E4
  • Fujifilm has been headed toward the high-end market for 5 years now and it is not likely they will return to entry-level products
  • There should be a successor to the X-T30 though
  • One way they can support the entry-level camera market is by producing older cameras at lower prices
  • The Full-frame 36×24 market is the product of marketing and it is greatly overrated
  • Fujifilm doesn’t oppose or push third-party optics and they believe they make the best lenses for their cameras, but they are neutral to third parties what matters is that photographers are happy
  • Doesnt know much about how AI will be used in Fujifilm cameras, but wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

LensTips: Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5 R WR Review – You Will Enjoy It Immensely

Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Lenstips published its full Fujinon XF8mm f/3.5 review here which you can read in full or you can check out the excerpt below:

Pros:

    • solid barrel mostly made of metal and weather-sealed,
    • very good image quality in the frame centre,
    • sensible image quality on the edge of the frame,
    • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
    • good correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
    • lack of any noticeable problems with spherical aberration,
    • fast and accurate autofocus.

Cons:

    • huge distortion level on RAW files,
    • significant vignetting on RAW files.
The Fujinon XF 8 mm f/3.5 R WR is a small, lightweight lens with angles of view exceeding 120 deg. An ideal? Not really. One thing is missing – a more affordable price. Currently, you have to pay almost $800 for it, a bit too much in my humble opinion. After all it’s just a prime with an averagely fast aperture. Still, if you decide to buy this lens I am sure you will enjoy it immensely.
