Don’t Buy The Fujifilm X-T2?

We have been covering the Fujifilm GFX 50S and X-T2 a lot on FujiAddict lately, but Fujifilm also makes a lot of great cameras for beginners. There is a tendency to lust after the latest and greatest gear, but most of what you can produce with a Fujifilm X-T2 could also be shot with the Fujifilm X-A3. It’s nice to want a “free” top of the line camera, but if you’re trying to pick out a good entry level, or even a first camera, the Fujifilm X-A3 or X-A10 are phenomenal values.

It would be far wiser to learn photography with an inexpensive body in a system that you would like to grow in than to jump around, because you can start to build a glass collection. Fujifilm has a lot of great and fun inexpensive glass now. The Fujinon XF23mm f/2, XF27mm f/2.8, XF35mm f/1.4, XF35mm f/2, XF50mm f/2 are great lenses to start with, or even the XF18-55mm f/2.8-4 zoom and XF55-200mm f/3.5-4.8. If you don’t find that glass affordable you can start with a XC16-50 and XC50-230, before deciding to branch out into XF glass.  The Fujifilm X70 would also be a great starting point for a beginner.

I don’t think many of my readers are new to Fujifilm, but I know there are a lot of people out there lusting after Fujifilm cameras since the launch of the X-T2 and GFX, when other gear might due. So, I feel it’s important to remind them that Fujifilm does have an entry level line, which is something the above Youtuber forgot or is unaware of, which might be bloggers/vlogers fault. After all, some of us are shooting specific gear, while others are just lusting after gear. I will try to do more to cover the full range in the future.

Fujifilm GFX50S: Landscape and Lightroom File Flexibility Demo

If you ever wondered about how a meticulous landscape artist works Lewis Von John released a video using the Fujifilm GFX 50S to produce an image. I don’t love the photo he took, but his methodology is sound. Below is a list of the equipment he used to prevent clipping and get the shot the first click.

10 Miles With a Fujifilm GFX50S and Full Kit

Last night I took my Fujifilm GFX 50S, EF-X500, the launch line-up of lenses and carbon fiber tripod on a 10 mile walk around Downtown Miami with my friend Depot MSA to see how it handled the city late at night. The entire kit was relatively light to carry for such a long distance in a smallish bag, but switching lenses was difficult at times. From a handling perspective, difficulty switching lenses while moving was the only thing that made the walk more difficult than doing it with my Fujifilm X-T2 or Sony a7II because the lenses are very thick. While I have a bad back, the gear did not weigh on me at all, even when walking swiftly away from an eccentric homeless man that didn’t want to leave us alone. Read More »

Fujifilm GFX 50S: Reviews, Fotodiox, and AF-C Performance

Daniel put together a very good Fujifilm GFX 50S video review that accurately represents the general performance of the GFX and even provided some new sample files for people to play with here. I must say of the three launch lenses the 63mm f/2.8 is the strangest because of how it hunts, but I think Fujifilm will tune this lens to perfection over the coming year. It’s a great lens and it’s really hard to pick between it and the 32-64mm f/4, but ill have to decided before my 30 days are up.

Surprisingly Fotodiox is now producing Fujifilm GFX 50S videos too. They are the first to release adapters, but Kipon, among many others, will follow soon. I’ll likely get a set of these to test once they are perfected. I would love to test some of the larger medium format lens for cameras like Mamiya.

Fujifilm Türkiye has a AF-C video that is representitive of AF-C performance at this time using the 32-64mm lens zoomed. I will likely try all 3 lenses this weekend at the Florida Renaissance Festival during the joust if I can get close enough to use them.

Digidirect also released their GFX video today, which is pretty standard. Nothing really new to see, but there are some example images.

DPReview Street Shoots With The GFX and Some New Thoughts

DPReview has an article about street shooting the Fujifilm GFX 50S on the streets of Japan and here are the take aways.

  • In fact, I’d go as far to say that in terms of ergonomics and comfort, I’d prefer to spend the day walking around with the GFX 50S over a Nikon D810 or Canon EOS 5D SR (with similar-sized lenses) for a few reasons. (It’s more comfortable to hold for a long time, can be used with one hand)
  • Autofocus, as you might expect from a contrast detect system, is quite sluggish. Not only that, it’s also pretty loud. And when fully racking focus from minimum to infinity, the 63mm F2.8’s lens barrel extends considerably. The camera is also a tad slow to start up.
  • I missed a couple decisive moments due to the combination of sluggish start up and slow autofocus.
  • That said, while AF is slow, it is both accurate and precise (in good light). This is the positive of a mirrorless camera using a CDAF system.
  • Using a dimly-lit bar as my scene (settings around ISO 12800, 1/60 sec at F2.8), the GFX 50S proved largely unable to focus on anything.
  • Although resolution is pretty high (3.7 million dots) the viewfinder image gets noticeably ‘crunchy’ when focus is initiated, and moiré and ‘shimmering’ can be very distracting in some scenes, especially cityscapes.
  • using this camera reminded me just how much I love Fujifilm colors and skintones
  • There’s something really strange/enticing about being able to shoot casually with a digital medium-format camera. And despite some sluggishness in its operation, the GFX 50S was  surprisingly good for street and travel photography.

You can read the full article here, but I have to bring up a point that no one seems to be addressing. There are several ways to tweak the autofocus of the Fujifilm GFX and they do seem to matter a lot.

GFX Thoughts of The Day
Last night I shot some photos around my house with all the lights off handheld and surprisingly I was able to achieve focus lock quickly with just the TV on in the living room. Using rapid AF and pre-AF seems to improve performance considerably sometimes, which is odd because I usually turn these off if they are on by default. Then this morning before walking to the beach I tried a quick portrait with just the light from a 15-inch MacBook Pro using the GF 32-64mm f/4 at an extremely low shutter speed and got a tack sharp image. I think this is largely the result of the super quite shutter that causes very little vibration, it actually makes the new Leica M10 sound loud.
