Fujifilm GFX 50S: Initial Impressions

Today I took my Fujifilm GFX50S to Morikomi Gardens to see how it handled a variety of shooting conditions and it did not fail to impress. I haven’t had time to fully explore the system yet, but I want to say that after shooting the GFX myself I feel a lot of the information out there is incorrect.  I highly encourage you to get hands on with a GFX if you have any doubts in your mind about this system being right for you. Fujifilm GFX50S Technologies: Through the Glass of GF Lenses

Fujifilm has a series of blog posts explaining some of the key technological advantages of the Fujifilm GFX 50S system and they just released their most significant one. It affectively puts other manufactures on notice that they believe they are making the best glass on the market at this time for a medium format camera. Here are a few of the statements:

“Lenses are a huge factor that contributes to image quality. Lens technology is not everything, but there is a limit to what one can do post-processing if the lens used is mediocre. People see the difference in the result of medium format GFX, largely due to the lens.”

“Are the current medium format lenses in the industry the best in the world? Not quite. With the exception of a few, many of the lenses in the market are not designed with the latest technology in mind. The latest sensors have much greater potential than what these lenses can capture.”

“Let’s be clear. It is unfair to compare GF Lenses directly with existing medium format lenses.”

The claims are pretty aggressive and it will be interesting to see how photographers react, but this all seems to be very much in line with what early testing is revealing. The GFX system is an incredible value compared to other “mysterious” medium format systems that are priced out side of most photographers budget and we know Fujifilm knows how to make glass for reasonable prices.

You can read all of GFX Technologies #3 – Through the Glass of GF Lenses here.

You can also read the other two parts of the series, but they aren’t nearly as interesting or as grandiose in their claims.

Fujifilm X100F Reviews and Recommended Settings

If you’re looking for a new perspective on the Fujifilm X100F StreetShooter did a great fully independent review of the Fujifilm X100F that is very fair. Amateur Photographer also compared the Fujifilm X100F to its predecessor and Bert Stephani did a bit of a gimmicky review of the X100F with a preproduction camera as a desert island camera. Reid also has an excellent review. I will continue to cover independent reviews as I come across them.

StreetShooter Written Review – Baby Fujifilm X-Pro2 that could use weather sealing.

Fujifilm X-T20 Reviews and Comparisons

Reviewers are universally praising the Fujifilm X-T20 for its incredible performance and value, but wish it was a little easier to grip. Fujifilm might even cannibalize some Fujifilm X-T2 sales, because of how well the X-T20 performers.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Broncolor Siros S 800 HSS, Sample Videos, Canon 5DS R Comparison and More

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRY4cb65IJA

Broncolor Siros S 800 performing HSS with a “mystery trigger.” This might just be first party support, since companies like Profoto just added support for Sony and it’s been rumored that Fujifilm support will follow shortly. There are some convoluted hacks to get high sync working using third party triggers, but I think first parties will release support before 3rd parties officially do, because reverse engineering flash communications is difficult.
