Fujilove Podcast With Billy Luong From The Fuji Guys: Fast GFX Glass, GFX Tilt Shift, Film, Travel, and More

Fuji Love’s Fourth interview with Billy Luong was posted and this one is just under an hr long. If you have the time you can listen to the podcast on FujiloveiTunes, and Stitcher. You can find listen to our coverage from the first, second, and third podcast at the links. If you do not have an hr to burn the excerpts covering the whole podcast are below:

Q&A Section (The answers)

  • If you put a new battery in your camera and the settings reset when you power on the camera the internal battery might have died from sitting too long. If it wasn’t sitting for a long time (about a week) you might want to have your camera checked
  • You can back up your camera settings with x acquire
  • We no not apply crop factor to glass markings, because they are specs about the lens and not the look that it creates like the dof.
  • Fujifilm could make f/2 zooms, but they would be very large and it’s kind of against Fujifilm’s design philosophy
  • The Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is a good option for photographers that want a constant aperture
  • Tilt-shift for GFX isn’t currently on a roadmap so Billy can’t talk about it, but keep bugging Fujifilm
  • They had a meeting about making faster lenses for GFX and Billy says we will get more lenses like the 110mm f/2, but they don’t want to make the lenses too big or heavy
  • Fujifilm is bringing back some B&W film due to demand, but the volume for film is very low so it gets expensive if demand isn’t high
  • Billy can see the appeal of film, but it’s hard to say if they will do more anytime soon because it’s expensive to make and shoot.
  • Billy thinks that Fujifilm digital has done a great job of simulating their film stock

Camera Corner

  • Might not want to take a GFX100 on vacation due to the size (I’m taking mine with 3 primes)
  • Recommends the Fujifilm X-T30 for vacation
  • Picking the right lens for travel is difficult because you have to sacrifice something and Billy feels he gets lazy with a zoom so he would go with a compact prime, but if doing something active he would go with a zoom like the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR.
  • Billy feels that using a consistent focal length when shooting makes images feel more connected and consistent so he prefers primes
  • If it’s a once in a lifetime trip and you’re going to be photographing in the distance than you definitely should look at zoom lenses since it’s unlikely you’re going to get the XF200mm for distance shots unless you’re going on safari.
  • Billy uses the Fujinon XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 as a good example of a lightweight small lens that gives you a lot of reach for a low price.
  • Billy takes two f/2 prime lenses with him the 35mm and 50mm, but he mainly uses the 35mm along with the 18-55mm because all 3 are very compact compared to SLR
  • Billy currently is really into the XF35mm f/1.4 over the f/2 because it is beautiful and he forgot how good it was
  • His next vacation will be the XF35mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.2
  • Billy hates bringing a tripod with him and primarily uses it to be in the photo too, but when he does he goes compact with like a gorilla tripod
  • If you want to shoot all day bring 3 batteries for XF cameras
  • It is not good to keep your batteries at a full state so if you want to maintain your batteries keeping them full isn’t the best way, but Billy still keeps all his batteries fully charged
  • If you have someone take a photo for you it’s probably best to just put your camera in auto mode

Meyer Optik Görlitz is Coming Back

Renewal of the Meyer Optik Görlitz portfolio on schedule

  • Optimization of the first lens completed
  • Further new versions of previous lenses in progress
  • First completely new development finalized / more to follow
  • Cooperation with Fotomuseum Görlitz & the City of Görlitz

Bad Kreuznach – Meyer Optik is pushing the revision and optimization of its existing portfolio and has already completed its first projects. The developments are thus on schedule and the first Meyer Optik lenses developed and produced by OPC will be available in late summer 2019.

“We have analyzed the entire existing portfolio, identified optimization potential and categorized it according to effort. This approach now enables us to efficiently optimize lens by lens and to publish in a timely manner,” explains Timo Heinze, Managing Director of OPC Optics. “We are currently in the prototype phase of the first optimized lens and are confident that we will achieve an increase in the mechanical quality and imaging performance of this and all other lenses. Depending on the individual lens, the scope of these improvements and changes will of course vary. The unique image language of every individual lens will be retained of course.” Read More »
