Update:
I attended the meeting and it was useful. It seems everything is up in the area, but the attorney on the call recommended that photographers apply for everything they can. I don’t want to give any legal advice on this blog and the lawyer they had explaining everything wasn’t comfortable going into tax, but they are having another townhall today, which you can watch here at 3PM you can also find their resources here.

Tales of the X-T4: Tale 3 ETERNA Bleach Bypass

Previously Fujifilm released X-T4 tales:

Tales of the X-T4: Tale 1 – Versatile Performance
Tales of the X-T4: Tale 2 – IBIS

Now Fujifilm has released its second tale “Tales of the X-T4: Tale 3”

Fujifilm has always been a company that cared about color science whether dealing with film or digital photography. This is why in 2003 they started creating film simulations in their digital cameras with the FinePix F700, which featured “F-Simulation” that kicked off Fujifilm’s continued roll-out of digital film stock simulations.

The rolling out of film simulations haven’t been random, because starting with the X-Pro2 Fujifilm introduced “ACROS” which fit the design philosophy of the X-Pro2, which was followed by “ETERNA” in the X-H1 which was intended for video use, and later “Classic Neg.” for the X-Pro3. This has now lead to “ETERNA Bleach Bypass” in the X-T4.

“ETERNA Bleach Bypass” is the follow up to “ETERNA”, which was introduced for the X-H1 that was intended to be more videocentric. When Fujifilm compares their film simulations “PROVIA” was dead center until the introduction of “ETERNA”, which is outside the matrix of their photography centric simulations due to its low saturation and contrast, which you can learn about here.

Now “ETERNA Bleach Bypass” pushes Fujifilm simulations even further, making “ETERNA” more of a middle ground simulation. It resembles black-and-white photographs dropping saturation even more, while tightening dynamic range making it equivalent to “Classic Chrome” for photography on their matrix which you can see below.

In Japan “bleach bypass” is know as “retaining the silver” because it skips the step of removing (“bleaching”) the silver halide during development which goes back to the days of film. Fujifilm has been aware of this technique for some time and they have decided to introduce it first in its “bleach bypass” movie film simulation.

This effect is very different today, because in the past it was done for movies being projected on a screen, while digital images are often viewed on monitors, phones, TV screens, and more. This made designing “bleach bypass” an engineering challenge because it has to be designed to relay the same impression created by viewing the film in the theater on any format that it is viewed.

Fujifilm Formally Announces US Phase II Avigan Trials and Fujifilm COVID-19 Healthcare Support

We announced this yesterday as part of our COVID-19 (Coronavirus) coverage the United States is now in Phase II clinical trials, while other countries are already in Phase 3. Things are moving quickly around the world and Fujifilm has been playing a big part ( 12345678, 9) in the Eastern response and now the Western response too hopefully. Below is the clinical trial list that I have worked off before and the official press release:

  • Phase 0 clinical trials: Exploring if and how a new drug may work
  • Phase I clinical trials: Is the treatment safe?
  • Phase II clinical trials: Does the treatment work?
  • Phase III clinical trials: Is it better than what’s already available?
  • Submission for FDA approval: New drug application (NDA)
  • Phase IV clinical trials: What else do we need to know?

Fujifilm announces the start of a phase II clinical trial of its influenza antiviral drug “Avigan® Tablet” for COVID-19 patients in the U.S
TOKYO, April 9, 2020 — FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) announces the initiation of a U.S. phase II clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of its influenza antiviral drug “Avigan® Tablet” (generic name: favipiravir) for patients with COVID-19, a respiratory infection caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Avigan, approved in Japan for manufacture and sale as an influenza antiviral drug, selectively inhibits RNA polymerase necessary for influenza virus replication. Due to this mechanism of action, it is expected that Avigan may potentially have an antiviral effect on the new coronavirus, because like influenza viruses, coronaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses that also depend on viral RNA polymerase. On March 31, Fujifilm announced the start of a phase III clinical trial of Avigan for COVID-19 patients in Japan.

The clinical trial in the U.S. will enroll approximately 50 patients with COVID-19, in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Fujifilm will continue to work to establish a treatment method for COVID-19 patients through conducting clinical trials, and to contribute to ending the spread of this global pandemic as soon as possible by increasing the production of Avigan in collaboration with strategic partners.

[About “Avigan®Tablet”]
Avigan Tablet was approved for manufacture and sale in Japan in 2014 as an influenza antiviral drug. The drug is to be considered for use only when there is an outbreak of novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections in which other influenza antiviral drugs are either not effective or insufficiently effective, and the Japanese government decides to use the drug as a countermeasure against such influenza viruses. The drug is to be supplied only at the discretion of Japan’s Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. It is therefore only manufactured and distributed upon request by the Japanese Government. As such Avigan has never been generally distributed in the market and is not available at hospitals and pharmacies in Japan. Avigan is not approved for distribution in the U.S. or any overseas countries.

Although the current situation requires us to maintain physical distance, we at Fujifilm Healthcare are figuratively (!) moving closer together right now. Turbulent times require extraordinary measures. The Fujifilm Healthcare team continues to work at full capacity, so you can continue to care for your patients with ease. Especially during these challenging times, we are proud to be at your side as a competent partner.

Fujifilm X100V Takes Home The Gold From DPReview

The Fujifilm X100 kick off Fujifilm’s modern digital line of cameras so it should come as no surprise that it took home a solid gold from DPReview. In the past the camera has gone between gold and silver, but the X100V represents a back to back gold with the X100F, so it seems the X100 has finally arrived at a sold Gold status, but I would honestly enjoy shooting any of the X100 cameras. You can read the full review here and see what they didn’t and didn’t like below.

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Updated 26MP sensor offers good noise performance and fast readout
  • Excellent, highly tunable JPEG engine with good detail and noise reduction
  • Multiple film simulations with truly pleasing color output
  • Redesigned lens removes close-up ‘haze’ of previous models and improves corner performance
  • Class-leading 4K video capabilities
  • Tilting touchscreen
  • Great electronic / optical viewfinder
  • Good build quality, optional weather-sealing
  • Impressive low-light autofocus
  • Limited customizable buttons with elimination of four-way controller (Touchscreen function swipes won’t be to everyone’s taste)
  • Outright autofocus speed is still on the slow side
  • Face-and-eye detection UI a bit clunky
  • Full weather-sealing requires additional purchase
  • Some odd customization limitations, particularly for My Menu
  • Menus are getting overly complex
  • AF performance is less effective in OVF
  • Redesigned OVF makes it harder to anticipate AF point location

CamFi Now Supports Fujifilm X-T2, X-T3, X-H1, GFX 50R, GFX 50S and GFX 100

CamFi: B&H Photo / Amazon

CamFi Press Release
Guangdong, CHINA—April 8, 2020—CamFi, maker of wireless camera controllers, today announced that the new version of its app adds wireless tethering support for Fujifilm cameras. This feature allows the photographer to transmit photos from a Fujifilm camera to a laptop or a mobile phone via Wi-Fi automatically during a photo shoot.

“It is not very convenient to review the photos on a mobile device or a Mac while shooting by Fujifilm camera,” explained Mark Ma, CEO of CamFi. “The built-in Wi-Fi is too slow. Our new feature changes all that. Now, our device and app will speed up the workflow of photographers who use Fujifilm cameras.”

The new version of the app delivers a great deal of convenience to Fujifilm photographers. It supports the most popular Fujifilm cameras that are available after this update, including X-T2, X-T3, X-H1, GFX 50R, GFX 50S and GFX 100. The new version of the app also supports live view, remote capture, time lapse, HDR and focus stacking. Furthermore, this version allows photographers to save an image’s RAW file on the camera’s SD card and transfer the JPG file to the client device only. This capability can shorten the time required to review the photo.

All existing users of CamFi CF 101, CF 102, CamFi Pro and CamFi Pro Plus can upgrade their firmware with this version. Windows, Mac, iOS and Android platforms are all supported.

To prevent draining the battery of the CamFi device, CamFi also released a new USB connector for Fujifilm cameras. It will extend the work time of CamFi’s battery from 1 hour to 3 hours.
