Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R vs Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R APD

If you’re a little confused about the difference between the Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R and Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R APD Zed ProMedia has made it really simple to understand the difference. I personally own the Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R because I like that PDAF works with it and I utilize the extra light gathering capability, but I can appreciate why people might want to buy the APD for slightly creamier bokeh. The reviewer says he finds it slow, but it hasn’t been slow for me on my Fujifilm X-T1/X-Pro2/X-T2, but I’m not sure what settings he’s using. This is a snappy lens for it’s speed.

Iridient X-Transformer 1.0 beta 1 Tested

Iridient developer is considered by many to be key to X-Trans image quality excellence (Fujifilm X-T2, X-Pro2, X-T1, X-T10etc….). It is known for providing additional sharpness and avoiding the “worm/water color” effect that some people see when processing their RAW files in Lightroom. So, does Iridient transformer beta 1 deliver?

Iridient Transformer 1.0 beta 1 - More Detail - X-T2 ISO 200

Yes, and no… I’m a Mac user for my creative work, so I could have switched to Iridient Developer years ago, but I greatly prefer Lightroom. I never found Iridient Developer very convenient for my workflow so I haven’t used it in a very long time. I like to work across my multiple Apple devices using Lightroom and other products that sync my work through iCloud. I was pretty happy with Lightroom, and very happy with the last update that greatly improved X-Trans support, but I have always wanted to give Iridient a try again. Read More »

Fujifilm GFX 50S AF Points Exposed and Compared

A few readers have asked me about how many AF points the Fujifilm GFX 50S will have and now we kind of have an answer. The Joshua Loh video that was just released makes the amount of selectable AF points pretty easy to count and the coverage is easy to see. The way Joshua Loh has his GFX setup, there is a 13×9 grid (117 points) with a distinct area within consisting of a 7×7 grid (49 points). This is very interesting because a contrast detect autofocus system (CDAF) is, generally speaking, very flexible. All 117 points should perform similarly, but Fujifilm might be doing something similar to Panasonic with their CDAF, by utilizing out of focus rendering, in addition to the contrast at the selected focal point, to speed up their CDAF system; but only in the middle 7×7 gird, which is one possible explanation for the slightly different points around the middle. I don’t want to get too technical, but Fujifilm should be able to add or reduce CDAF points at will because they are arbitrary on a CDAF system and the processor they are using is pretty powerful. Fujifilm GFX Shipment Information and Challenges Series Continues

The day after the Fujifilm GFX $6,499 price leaked on Fujiaddict first and we start our GFX owners group and Facebook page, Fujifilm is aggressively marketing the GFX again with their interesting challenges series. This time they cover Gary Heery – Macr0:Studio work/Ivan Josh Loh – commercial work:studio/Per-Anders Jörgensen – Food:Outdoor Portrait/Romeo Balancourt – Portraits:Architecture/Luciano Romano – Art Portraits:Architecture/Minoru Kobayashi – Cars/Victor Liu – Landscape.

Be sure to follow Fujiaddict closely in the following weeks for pre-orders starting January 19th and any additional details that might leak early. I hope to have camera in hand shortly after February 23rd if pre-orders and shipments start on time. In the mean time support the site by using our affiliate links (AmazonB&H Photo and Adorama) for shopping at no added expense too you, because the GFX will represent a sizable investment. I plan to purchase at least two lenses for the system and will build out my kit for the site as quickly as possible so I can answer all of your questions based on personal experience.

Iridient X-Transformer 1.0 beta 1 Released

Iridient X-Transformer is a utility that can be used to convert Fujifilm RAF images to DNG format using Iridient Digital’s high quality RAW processing algorithms. Much of the core RAW processing, sharpening, noise reduction and lens corrections featured in this program are shared with Iridient Developer a more full-featured RAW processor that is available for macOS.

The Iridient RAW processing routines have been in active development for over 12 years for use in Iridient Developer and have been optimized and refined over the years for the best possible image quality. Iridient Developer is widely regarded as one of the highest quality RAW processors available.
This program converts Fujifilm’s proprietary RAF image data to the openly specified DNG image format. The DNG format was created and is publicly documented by Adobe. They have detailed information regarding the format on their website here: Adobe DNG information

The key RAW processing stages that can be applied by Iridient X-Transformer during conversion to DNG include:

  • Interpolation or demosaic processing. This transforms the camera sensor’s X-Trans or Bayer color filter information to produce a full color RGB image. This processing is always applied by Iridient X-Transformer and cannot be disabled or undone. There are two interpolation options, one for a more detailed rendering and a second smoother, lower artifact version. The algorithms are identical to the latest “detail+” and “smooth” options in Iridient Developer 3.1.2.
  • Sharpening. Iridient X-Transformer features advanced sharpening based on the very highly regarded “Iridient Reveal” sharpening algorithms featured in Iridient Developer. Sharpening is optional and can be adjusted (low/med/high) or disabled.
  • Automatic lens corrections for distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting. Corrections are based on native Fujifilm lens information specified in their RAF metadata. The lens correction stage is optional and lens correction information can also be passed on through DNG opcode metadata and left to later processing stages or ignored altogether. The lens correction processing in Iridient X-Transformer uses the same high quality resampling algorithms as Iridient Developer.
  • Color and luminance noise reduction. The noise reduction processing in Iridient X-Transformer shares much in common with the latest noise reduction available in Iridient Developer and is specifically optimized for RAW image processing. Noise reduction is optional and can be adjusted (low/med/high) or disabled.
