Fujifilm GFX 50S Shipments March 1st, 2017

It was originally announced that Shipments would begin February 24th, but a few days ago B&H Photo changed their shipment date to March 1st, 2017 (other sites usually follow B&H). I was working on something special for Fujiaddict and LeicaRumors, along with a friend of the blog that might be moving to Fujifilm very soon, that I hope to complete before the GFX launch so I am a bit behind on the news.

Let’s hope that the GFX doesn’t slip much further. I am already trying to make plans for my GFX review, which will hopefully include some readers. If you’re interested in participating feel free to reach out via the GFX owners group,  GFX Owners PageFujiAddict Page, Twitter, Contact Form, Smoke Signals…

If you haven’t already pre-ordered a GFX now might be a good time to get in line.

Fujifilm Fiscal Year FY2017/3 Financial Report

  • In the photo imaging business, while the overall sales decreased due to the negative impact of yen appreciation and other factors, the sales of instant photo systems such as the instax series and instax films, were strong especially in the United States and Europe. The high-value-added printing businesses such as the photobook services expanded.
  •  In the electronic imaging field, the sales increased due to the sales of such flagship models of the mirrorless digital camera as FUJIFILM X-Pro2 and FUJIFILM X-T2, and interchangeable lenses increased steadily.
  •  In the optical device field, the sales decreased due to the sales decrease of camera modules for use in smartphones.

Mr. Haruki’s Fujifilm GFX 50S Impressions

DC.Watch has an editorial by Mr. Haruki about the Fujifilm GFX 50S that is a little difficult to read via google translate, but I pulled out a few quotes to share.

“Since GFX 50S is compact, it is not conscious of being a middle-sized camera”

“It is smaller than I imagined at all and it is almost the same size as the existing 35 mm full size digital SLR camera. Rather, on a weight basis, GFX is surprisingly slightly lighter.”

“Both launch and AF seems to be responsive with agile movement.”

“You can use it in a sense close to 35 mm in any field such as landscape, fashion, commodity, snap, architecture, portrait.”

His impressions as a medium format shooter are interesting, but it isn’t clear why he was unable to give any impressions about the image quality. This could be an issue with google translate. There is also a great comparison shot (seen above) of the Fujifilm X-T2 and GFX 50s along with the Fujifilm H mount adapter on camera (below). Read More »

LensRentals: Fujifilm X-T2 Video Explored

LensRentals has a good overview of the Fujifilm X-T2’s video capabilities on their site. Fujifilm’s new sensor is great for video and it is even better for 4k video. The available film simulation modes make capturing pleasing video fast and easy for amateur videographers.

What I Liked:
The 4K images produced are very sharp.
Build quality is great.
Even at the $1600 MSRP, this camera is a bargain.
It also makes for an outstanding stills camera.

What Could be Improved:
F-log could be more aggressive and added as an in-camera option.
Moiré shows up often and is even worse at 1080p.
Low light performance is adequate but could make this camera stand out if improved.
Video options are slim. Continuous AF tweaks would be nice to have.

You can read lens rentals full overview of the Fujifilm X-T2’s video capabilities here if you want to dig into their complete overview.

Fujifilm X-T2 MirrorLessons Comparison

MirrorLessons has extensive coverage of the Fujifilm X-T2 on their site for those still wondering how the Fujifilm X-T2 stacks up. Their comparisons can be lengthy so grab some coffee and set aside a lot of time if you hope to get through them all.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 II vs. Fujifilm X-T2
Fujifilm X-T2 vs. X-Pro2
Fujifilm X-T1 vs X-T2

The other day Petapixel republished a deeply flawed article about X-Tran, that I was going to address, but decided it wasn’t worth the effort since commenters address almost all of the flaws quickly. You have probably read it already, but I think DPReview has the best thread about the flaws at this time.

There is also a pretty attractive offer for the Fujifilm X-T2. If you add a battery grip to your order with B&H Photo you can save $230 on the regular or graphite body, which makes the grip $100.
