DPReview Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Pentax 645Z vs Hasselblad X1D

DPReview is compared the three affordable medium format options and the Fujifilm GFX 50S did well:

  • The Pentax 645Z has a good track record of ruggedness, but the X1D and GFX are still unknowns.
  • Pentax 645Z gets about 650 shots per charge, while the GFX gets 400+ and the X1D does significantly worse.
  • All three are easy to control with gloves on, but the GFX has some small buttons.
  • The X1D and GFX have minimal shutter shock because of the electronic first curtain shutter on the GFX and leaf shutter on the X1D, while the 645Z has a mirror up mode.
  • The X1D is the lightest followed by the GFX, which is 200g heavier.
  • The GFX has very direct controls, while the 645Z can take time to learn and the X1D will require some menu navigation.
  • The GFX and 645Z have the best AF coverage.
  • The X1D wins flash sync speed due to the leaf shutter syncing up to 1/2000th with everything.
  • The GFX has the fastest autofocus, followed by the 645Z and then the sluggish X1D.
  • The GFX offers the best JPEG/TIFF/Starting point for delivering images.
  • The Pentax 645Z is the immediate choice for anyone who wants an optical viewfinder.
  • The Hasselblad X1D’s for high sync speeds.
  • Fujifilm GFX 50S for faster focus and greater endurance.

Fujinon GF 110mm f2 R LM Launch Date Rumor Take Two April

I haven’t been able to verify the April 19th launch date of the Fujinon GF 110mm f2 R LM with my source, but we have had previous incorrect statements about the launch date of the GF 110mm before. April is closer to Mid year, but Photoshop World and NAB are the only two shows running around this time and the GF 110mm is expected to launch along side the GF 23mm. Instax square definitely could launch on April 19th and when it does we expect two cameras, the Instax SQ and Instax SQ10.

The only thing we can verify at this time is that the price for the 110mm, 23mm and 45mm unlike other sites. These prices came from the same source that gave us the US Fujifilm GFX 50S launch lineup pricing before anyone else.

  • Fujinon GF 23mm f4 R LM WR (Mid 2017) $2,599
  • Fujinon GF 45mm f2.8 R WR (Late 2017) $1,699
  • Fujinon GF 110mm f2 R LM (Mid 2017) $2799

This is all the information we have about future GF lenses (From January 16th) at this time, as always we welcome information from readers anonymous or otherwise via the contact form, Twitter, Facebook, etc… but when it comes to rumors we have very high standards and might lag behind other sites because we only publish things that we can verify and we do our best to clarify rumors we are asked about.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Aurora Extended and Fujinon GF 120 f4 R LM OIS WR Focus Shift Explored

Not a lot of new Fujifilm GFX news today, but The Last Word tested for the Fujinon GF 120 f4 R LM OIS WR focus shift first reported by diglloyd’s and found a minimal shift when stopping down after focusing. Yet he doesn’t find an issue with the shift stating “you would do well to focus this lens at the taking aperture.” The Last Word is actually sounds really impressed with the 120mm stating ” it’s so sharp! I’ve not seen that kind of sharpness from analyzing raw planes.”

The Photography Blog also finished their review for the Fujinon GF 120 f4 R LM OIS WR, but they didn’t mention any focus shift. So far the entire Fujifilm GFX system has scored very well scoring 4.5 (Fujifilm GFX 50S / Fujinon GF 63mm f2.8 R). All that’s lefts for them to review is the Fujinon GF 32-64mm f4 R LM WR.

Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Hasselblad H5X, Street Photography and Technology

The Fujifilm GFX has technical photographers and photographers alike rethinking photography. Before the announcement of the GFX medium format was held in high regard/esteem by many, even if they hadn’t used the format before. Yet after the announcement and launch there has been a large back lash with many trying to prove that full frame is good enough or better.

Frankly m4/3 and 1-inch sensors are good enough for most and I think a lot of the turmoil we are experiencing today is from full frame users bashing APS-C/m43/1-inch etc… by focusing on the size of the sensor instead of understanding and analyzing the technology infused in the system. For instance BSI in the next GFX will lead to a huge jump in image quality and it’s the only reason the Sony a7R II is worth owning over other full frame solutions in my opinion. Take the time to understand the technology and you will better appreciate the GFX format Fujifilm has created for photographers.

Lens Protogo – Fujifilm GFX-50S w/GF 120mm f/4 Macro vs Hasselblad H5X w/Leaf Credo 60

“In conclusion, this new Fuji will certainly open the medium format door for some photographers who couldn’t quite stomach the typical price range of medium format digital backs–and in addition there are some really fun aspects that the Fuji brings to the table. The low light functionality, it’s smaller and lighter form factor, and the ability to share images socially while on the job are some of my favorite perks. If this came at a huge deficit image wise I might look past it, but it was able to stand up for itself in detail/color/quality.”

GFX Technologies #7 – The Development of the Ultimate Finder

“It has the world’s highest viewfinder magnification ratio of 0.85x…To compensate the higher reliance on the optical parts, they proposed a lens construction of 5 elements in 5 groups (all glass and including 2 aspherical elements), which is unheard of for a finder, in terms of both cost and size.

GFX Technologies #6 – Color Chrome Effect: Both a Goal, and a Beginning

“The development of Color Chrome Effect is derived from a reversal film: fortia. The film was introduced to the market in 2004 with the catchphrase “Higher contrast and more vivid color than Velvia”. It was a limited run, so although many talked about it, only few have had a chance to try it out… Even the X-Processor Pro needs about 1.0 sec. to process the Color Chrome Effect. If you are single shot user, then this is not a problem…We asked the image designer who created the Color Chrome Effect whether he could replicate the Color Chrome Effect by using image processing software. His answer was “yes, but it would take me an hour for each image. I also need to know the sensor characteristics of each image.””
