Fujifilm GFX 50S/X-T2 HSS Solution From RoboSHOOT: Updated

RoboSHOOT is ready to announce the release of test firmware 2.0.6 today. I don’t have a lot of details yet because the developer is polishing the firmware for release, but he gave me permission to inform my readers. I am currently using an Impact Venture TTL-600 Battery-Powered Monolight Kit with Nikon Controller  along with my RoboShoot MX-20 to successfully sync up to 1/4000 of a second with my Fujifilm GFX 50S and 1/8000 of a second with my X-T2. TTL isn’t functional for me, but it should be in the future. Profoto lights currently supports TTL and HSS in manual, I’m sure other systems with Nikon controllers will work, since the developer didn’t design the firmware for my lighting setup.

If you currently own a MX-20, all you will need is the app to update the firmware. You can find a guide here. If not, you can buy a RoboSHOOT from B&H Photo along with my lighting setup (RoboShoot MX-20 and Impact Venture TTL-600).

I will have more details about the update soon. Hopefully, TTL will be working and there will be reports of more lighting kits compatible with the RoboSHOOT MX-20. The product has been solid for me since receiving it, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to use HSS outside of the Fujifilm EF-X500.

WHAT’S NEW IN THIS VERSION
Added flash support – the added flash support includes:
– Nikon SB-800 and SB-5000
– Godox AD-360ii-N and X1N (Radio Remote)
– Profoto AirTTL-N and supported Profoto monolights
– Impact Venture Monolights with their Nikon Remote (reported support)
– a few others.
Note, the Monolight support generally does not allow TTL+HSS at the same time. In that case, use manual power control In-Camera or on the controller for the Monolight. AutoFP will be selected according to shutter speed even if the light is in manual mode.
Manual Mode improvements (Selecting Manual Mode In-Camera for all groups with TTL flash):
– Manual Power is settable In-Camera for each group independently.
– AutoFP is available.
– Frame Rate of 8fps is possible.
This enables full In-Camera control of manual power and HSS while retaining high frame rates.

The In-Camera Flash Exposure Lock may now be used. The RoboSHOOT FEL function is still available but cannot be used at the same time as In-Camera lock (it is prevented).

Fujifilm GFX 50S First Lok

Lok goes hands on with the Fujifilm GFX 50S first the first time and he sounds really impressed. He likes the feel a lot and describes the AF as being not far off from the Fujifilm X-T2, but the Fujifilm rep is quick to correct him and says that it is about the speed of the a launch Fujifilm X-T1, which was my first impression. I am glad that Kai and Lok are back in full swing and I hope they do more cross over videos soon.

Cactus X-TTL

TTL without Boundaries! Cactus launches FREE firmware upgrades on the V6 II and V6 IIs to support wireless cross-brand TTL.
Hong Kong, March 24, 2017 – Just nine months since the release of the Cactus V6 II and Cactus V6 IIs, Cactus is now launching a series of brand-specific firmware upgrades to transform the cross-brand HSS flash triggers to one that also supports cross-brand wireless TTL.

The new X-TTL firmware versions, apart from supporting cross-brand high-speed sync (HSS/FP), remote power and zoom control of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sigma flashes all at the same time1, NOW support automatic TTL exposure in the same cross-brand environment, both on-camera and off-camera.2

The first wave of firmware releases will be for Sigma, Sony and Fujifilm. Other camera systems, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax, will follow one by one as we complete system integration on the V6 II. All these X-TTL firmware versions are free of charge for V6 II / V6 IIs users. The new firmware is system-specific so users simply choose the corresponding system when updating with the Cactus Firmware Updater. Once installed, the V6 II / V6 IIs is transformed into a cross-brand wireless TTL flash trigger.

This unique function gives photographers an unprecedented flexibility. The need for matching flashes with the same camera system for on and off-camera TTL flash photography is over – TTL without boundaries.

Fujifilm GFX 50S: 60 Minute Exposure, GFX FPS, GFX Samples and More

Two nights ago I attempted shooting two 60 minute exposures to test the Fujifilm GFX 50S’ noise performance, but wasn’t successful. I began by shooting without long exposure noise reduction on, to save time. Then when started my long exposure noise reduction photo but was interrupted twice, which wasted about 30 minutes of time, since I had to start over. Once I completed my second photo the camera had one bar of battery left so I raced back to my house to plug the camera in, but it died before I got there so the noise reduction did not finish. The image looks ok, but since it’s not correctly processed it’s not worth sharing.

The take away from this experience is that I estimate the Fujifilm GFX 50S is capable of shooting about 3hrs strait with the rear screen LCD on. I hope to attempt the test again soon using the EVF, but if your are going to shoot super long exposures I highly recommend having the hand grip with a second battery or keeping close track of how long you are shooting for, because 3hrs seems to be the maxiumum length and wasting over an hour of time can be a disappointing experience.

GFX FPS Program
FujiAddict was the first blog to find the GFX FPS program sign up page and share it, but it appears we were a bit early. The other day I received a response from Fujifilm:

The Program won’t be available until May 1st, 2017. I had a few questions that I needed answered so I called the same manager I spoke with last time to address my problem and asked him for more details on the program. It appears the US and European programs are going to be very different since the customers are seen as being different. Europeans have a lot more X gear so Fujifilm didn’t view the equipment requirements in Europe as being burdensome, but in the US it is expected that GFX owners will likely be new customers so they wanted to open the program up for everyone. Further the US program will offer more cleanings, etc…

The cleanings in particular interested me because I have a lens that really needs to be serviced for the X system, but according to the manager I spoke with Fujifilm will not cover my X equipment under the FPS program at this time. I found this news very disappointing, but encouraged him to let Fujifilm know this would help many justify the additional cost. I hope Fujifilm rethinks the program before May 1st.

The Photography Show 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLwiMQF2HR0

Fujifilm was the most interesting company at the Photography Show this year. All of their recently released cameras are very highly praised and they will only get better as Fujifilm updates them via firmware. Canon and Nikon should be very worried.

Fujifilm GFX 50S in Stock Now and Other News

The Fujifilm GFX 50S is currently in stock at Amazon and Adorama. B&H Photo should received a shipment the beginning of April.

Peter Mendelson – “I am always amazed how much I can boost the shadows without introducing a ton of noise, but sometimes I find blown highlights that are unrecoverable that I thought I might be able to recover.”

GFX 50S: Surpassing All Expectations – “I couldn’t get over the output quality and the film like tones it emulates with skin. This alone cut my processing time in half, as I wasn’t spending as much time behind my computer retouching skin.”
