Fujifilm X-H1 and Fujinon MK Lenses Together at Last and Some Thoughts on ETERNA

I had a little bit of time over the break to match up the Fujinon MK lenses with the Fujifilm X-H1 body that I made for the site a while ago and you can definitely see how the bulkier body will make the pair fit together better. The dimensions aren’t perfect, but they are close enough to get a good idea of how they were made to complement each other. According to the original rumor, the camera will closely match the GFX not the X-T2, which is why I built my mockup off a Fujifilm GFX 50S. The larger grip definitely complements the big Fujinon MK lenses nicely and will add to the overall experience of using this camera for video and make handling large lenses like the upcoming Fujinon XF 200mm F2 R LM OIS WR easier.

Lots of sites are rehashing the specs that are already out there with February fast approaching, but if you want to read the specs you can go here for a detailed list of what we expect to see this year from Fujifilm. The rest you can see on the mock-up, but I was thinking about another aspect of this camera that’s coming while shooting over the holiday break. Film simulation has always been a useful option that Fujifilm cameras have over others for years now. One of the first things I did with my Fujifilm X-Pro2 was film 1080p video using a variety of film simulations I enjoy shooting with and I ended up loving the moody results.

You can already do a lot with in-camera film simulation if you take the time to tweak it as I have on YouTube, but not many videographers have embraced Fujifilms simulations so far, what makes ETERNA different? From the little bit of research, I have done on the topic, different types of ETERNA will give you perfect color if you use the correct lighting type with the film. ETERNA 500 uses 3200k tungsten lights  to get perfect color, but will the filter guide also work with ETERNA simulation like the ETERNA film?

ETERNA 250D, on the other hand, is daylight balanced for 5400K so the format isn’t completely locked into tungsten lights, but it will be interesting if some of the lighting properties from the film carried over. I think videography and cinematography would benefit a lot by going back to its roots of getting the footage right in camera, to begin with. You can read more about the different film stock here, but are videographers and cinematographers looking for baked in colors that are correct in today’s world?

The Fujifilm X-H1 has my mind wondering about the possibilities, especially as the questions come in via E-mail and direct messager. Can Fujifilm push back against the overwhelming amount of videographers that want to work in RAW video formats and create a true cinema type camera experience in a digital camera? I think a lot of videographers and their clients would benefit from shooting footage 100% spot on, to begin with like the film days, but not everyone is equipped to do so today. The Fujifilm X-H1 could also easily just become a Fujifilm X-T2 replacement for photographers looking for a little more performance and a bigger body while waiting for the Fujifilm X-T3 to arrive. Either way, Fujifilm fans have a lot to look forward to in 2018.

Godox AD600 Pro Leaked

Godox has enjoyed a very loyal following among Fujifilm fans since it began fully supporting Fujifilm cameras in 2017. They make some of the best flashes for the price and will be releasing an update to the AD600 very soon. DIYPhotography grabbed some screenshots of the Godox site earlier today as the Godox AD600 Pro page went live and was later pulled, which you can see here.

You can see the major changes between the AD600 and AD600 Pro above, which seem to be largely tied to flash recycle time and quality. The only way in which the AD600 Pro is inferior to the AD600 is that it can only fire 360 full powered flashes, while the old AD600 could fire 500. The 38W modeling light and .9s recycle time along with stable color temperature mode are all welcome improvements, with USB-C being great if you have already upgraded.

The new AD600 Pro can be found on Adorama (currently on their front page) under the Flashpoint name as the Flashpoint XPLOR 600PRO TTL, which is $150 more than the XPLOR 600 TTL. As always you can mix and match your Godox gear with Flashpoint or just wait for the Godox AD600 Pro to start shipping from Amazon or B&H Photo in the near future.

Fujiilm/Fujinon’s MK Zoom Lens Series Honored in Several Best-Of Lists

FUJIFILM/FUJINON’S MK ZOOM LENS SERIES HONORED IN SEVERAL BEST-OF LISTS
Wayne, N.J., January 4, 2018 – Since their launch in February of 2017, the MK Series of zoom lenses from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM have received numerous accolades from noted industry websites, publications and cinematographers thanks to the lens’ lightweight, professional zoom performance and price point. Among those recognizing the FUJINON MK18-55mm and MK50-135mm T2.9 zoom  T2.9 zooms are: No Film School (Best New Lenses of 2017); Pro Moviemaker (Launch of the Year); Philip Bloom (Best Video/Cinema Lens); Newsshooter (Best Cinema Lens); and The Camera Store (Best New Lenses of 2017).

MK lenses are currently designed for E-mount cameras with the Super 35mm/APS-C sensor and boast advanced optical performance, ultra-compact and lightweight design. With a combined focal length range of 18mm-135mm in the Super 35mm format, the first two MK lenses (the MK18-55mm and 50-135mm) cover the most frequently used range utilized by emerging cinematographers. The series offers fast lenses with T2.9 speed across the entire zoom range, enabling a shallow depth-of-field.

In its “Best New Lenses of 2017” rundown, No Film School writes, “Both the MK18-55mm and MK50-135mm zoom lenses have been favorably reviewed and for good reason. The T2.9 lenses are lightweight, have a favorable image quality over Sigma glass, minimize chromatic aberration, and are very fast. But you don’t have to take our word for it.”

Readers of Pro Moviemaker voted the MK Series “Launch of the Year” as part of the publication’s “2017 Gear of the Year Awards”. Representatives from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM will receive this award during a ceremony held at the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) Expo 2018 in London in early February.

In his “Best Gear of 2017” blog, DP Philip Bloom awarded the MK Series “Best Video/Cinema Lens.” View footage shot by Bloom in Gran Canaria using an MK18-55mm T2.9 lens and Sony FS7, FS5 and A7S II cameras here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cx66LKDPTc  and watch behind-the-scenes with Bloom and his MK18-55mm here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX_55s4s6Ro.

Matt Allard of Newshooter.com named the MK Series the Best Cinema Lens of 2017, stating, “With a growing need for lower cost, high-performance cinema lenses, Fujinon answered the call with the announcement of the MK zooms. At just 980g, with parfocal performance, and almost no focus breathing they are certainly not rehoused still lenses trying to be cinema lenses…The MK zooms offer exceptional performance and value for the money.”

The MK 18-55mm Series received a nod from Canadian photo and video equipment dealer, The Camera Store, as one of its Best New Lenses of 2017 on its YouTube channel, The Camera Store TV. Camera Store Video Specialist and show host Jordan Drake notes the zoom’s compact size and light weight, stating that the lens is “parfocal, breathing corrected, and an unbelievable video lens…this thing is stunning.”

FUJINON MK lenses are purpose-built for the operator. Only one matte box and one filter size are needed between the lenses. Time-saving features include a macro function that allows for a broader range of close-up shooting, and gears for the three rings are positioned in the exact same place, which eliminates the need to re-position accessories when switching lenses. The MK18-55mm is currently available for $3,799, and the FUJINON MK50-135mm T2.9 is available for $3,999.

In other award news this year, FUJINON’s 4K Cine Zoom lenses – the Cabrio and Premier Series – were awarded an Engineering Emmy® for “providing imagery in television” by the Television Academy. The introduction of FUJINON’s Cabrio and Premier series of cinema zoom lenses brought about the ability to cover Super 35mm imagers and efficiently shoot the full gamut of television production without sacrificing image quality.

New Meike Arca Swiss Hand Grip Plate For Fujifilm X-E3

The Meike Arca Swiss Hand Grip Plate For Fujifilm X-E3 is now available for the Fujifilm X-E3 on Amazon three months after the release of the Arca Swiss Hand Grip Plate for X-T2, X-T1 and X-Pro2. These dual-purpose plates are very useful and it’s a shame they haven’t designed one for the GFX. It would be interesting to see if they could put two Arca Swiss rails on it, while leaving the battery door accessible.

Fujinon XF80mm LM OIS WR Macro 1:1 Roundup

The Fujinon XF80mm LM OIS WR Macro 1:1 is getting almost universal praise, with the only weak points being some vignetting in RAW files and swirly bokeh wide open. Both of these issues are basically eliminated at f/8 and higher, which isn’t surprising since Macro lenses are often optimized to be stopped down for depth of field up close. I am still seriously considering this lens and the Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR, but I’m waiting to see if I get access to the Falcon Heavy launch in January, because it might cause me to buy the Fujinon XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR again.
