Steelring Nikon F/FX/GFX: Nikon F Mount For GFX and X Series Smart AF Adapter Coming Soon

We reported that Steelring was working on a Nikon GFX adapter about one month ago, but now it seems that this adapter will also be coming to X-Series cameras soon. The GFX adapter is further along than the one for X-series from what I understand, but it seems adapters supporting Nikon lenses are on the rise. There was also a slightly alternative post about the adapters which you can read about below.

Main features:

  1. Support Nikon AF-S G and E type lens, and AF-P G type lens contrast based AF in GFX 50s body.
  2. Electromagnetic diaphragm of type E Lens can be controlled by GFX 50s body, allows AF in full open ( decided by camera body ) and step down for exposure.
  3. Diaphragm of G type lens was manually controlled by aperture ring of adapter in real-time,  so AF is conducted in real effective aperture as exposure. AF performance may be bad in low light/contrast, benefits are 1) Real aperture priority,  2) and totally no noise of consistent IRIS moving.
  4. Full EXIF info recording. ( For G type lens, only the current max open aperture was displayed and recorded, no way to adjust it ).
  5. Lens VR was support and effective on demand.

FX mount version adapter is in design phase, maybe with better performance of PDAF and auto aperture control version for your choice.

Note:

Support to AF-D type lens will be very limited, EXIF may works, but no AF absolutely.

The new Nikon Z is almost GFX sized, but some of the dimensions are impressive until you add a lens. Nikon’s new 50mm f/1.8 is huge and it makes it larger than the fast 50 for the Fujifilm GFX the Fujinon GF 63mm f/2.8. Fujifilm X-T3 vs Nikon Z6 vs Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Nikon Z7 vs Fujifilm GFX 50R by The Specs

The Nikon Z system has been announced officially and after the launch, many that have used the camera are calling it a satisfactory competitor for the Sony a7III and a7RIII, but what about Fujifilm’s line up in the near future? The GFX and X-T3 compare quite well with the Nikon Z6 and Z7, but the X-T3 should be significantly less expensive, while the Fujifilm GFX is more expensive, even with the Fujifilm GFX 50R coming.

It sounds like Nikon has incrementally improved Sony’s designs, but they have only announced the development of 12 native lenses by 2020, while Fujifilm and Sony will safely continue their native glass lead. I am sure many fans of Nikon cameras will happily wait and adapt glass in the meantime, but Fujifilm and Sony users will likely wait for a few generations to come out before considering picking one up. The new Nikon Z is a good start, but it’s specs are too close to cameras you can already purchase today and if Nikon wait’s 4 years to update the new Nikon Z they will be 2-3 generations behind Fujifilm and Sony when they release the Nikon Z Mark II.
