First Fujifilm X-T3 Teardown Finds Decent Weather Sealing and More

Kolari Vision sent us their Fujifilm X-T3 tear down and it gives some insight into how well the Fujifilm X-T3 is built. The Fujifilm X-T3 is very well laid out inside unlike camera’s like the Sony a7RIII that has dual card slots on the board that “look like they’re at risk of falling off the edge.” Fujifilm has also done a good job with their weather sealing, but Korlari doesn’t recommend you take it to the Amazon.

Overall the Fujifilm X-T3 is very well designed inside and even though manufacturing moved from Japan to China it looks like the X-T3 hasn’t suffered any loss of quality over previous cameras like the Fujifilm X-T2. Kolari also removed the IR block form the X-T3 while they had it disassembled and I can’t wait to see how their full spectrum mod works.

IR Photography can be a lot of fun with Fujifilm cameras since they all have some level of IR sensitivity even with the IR block inside. I tested the Fujifilm X-Pro2 for IR sensitivity when it launched and I will test the X-T3 soon, but cut filter IR photography is a little different than full spectrum so I can’t wait to see Korlari’s results. If you want to see their full tear down it’s available here, but their site also has a lot of cool projects to check out while you are there.

DPReviewTV: Fujifilm X-T3 Tops Crop Sensor Shoot Out – X-T3 vs Nikon D500 vs Panasonic G9 vs Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark 2

Some think that the Fujifilm X-T3 isn’t worth the upgrade over the X-T2, but time and again the Fujifilm X-T3 is coming out on top in these kinds of comparisons. The performance bump that Fujifilm gave the X-T3 is a very noticeable one when working with the camera and everyone appreciates it since it elevated the Fujifilm X-T3 into a jack of all trades camera that does everything better than the competition.

DPRTV compared the Fujifilm X-T3 to the Nikon D500, Panasonic G9, and Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark2. My only complaint about the comparison is that I do not think the D500 has better AF than the X-T3 and DPRTV went with a presumption instead of testing to say the D500 was better at AF for sports, but I completely agree with Nikon having more glass designed for Sports, which matters. Below are some of the key points from their results.

Landscape

  1. Fujifilm X-T3: High resolution/dynamic range/good lowlight, Portable and rugged
  2. Nikon D500: Nothing mentioned
  3. Panasonic G9/Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark2 Tie: Both rugged, portable with IBIS and both have a multishot mode

Street Shooting

  1. Fujifilm X-T3: So many positives here. Sexiest looking body with a very classic feel that goes along with great performance.
  2. Panasonic G9: Panasonic has some advanced features that the OMD is missing. Better AF in general than the OMD also.
  3. Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark2: Great controls and ergonomics, but the camera is overly complicated
  4. Nikon D500: Fast AF and continuous shooting with good IQ, but too bulky

Sports

  1. Nikon D500: Undisputed champion because Nikon has a great selection of lenses and a platform that gives you more balance and stability. Probably still the best AF.
  2. Fujifilm X-T3: Great lenses for shooting sports now and insanely fast AF/burst rate.
  3. Panasonic G9: Better 4k/6k mode and plenty of great glass, but the CDAF isn’t as good as PDAF
  4. Olympus OM-D EM1 Mark2: Very fast burst rate and some interesting lenses, but procapture isn’t the best

Portraiture

  1. Fujifilm X-T3: Fujifilm cares about APS-C and they make great lenses for it and Fujifilm has great color.
  2. Nikon D500: Nikon has some great lenses, but you need a lot of space in the studio to really take advantage.
  3. Olympus OM-D: Olympus color is preferred over the Olympus and they have great portrait lenses.
  4. Panasonic G9: Only picked the OMD over it because people tend to like Olympus Colors.

Video

  1. Fujifilm X-T3: Current crush camera with 10-bit internal and 4k60p. It has ETERNA which is their favorite straight out of camera profile and the camera has great AF in video. Jordan can’t wait to see these features implemented in the Fujifilm X-H2.
  2. Panasonic G9: Takes a lot of stuff from the GH5 and has 4k60p, but a lot of the GH5’s best features are missing like an unlimited record time.
  3. Olympus OM-D: Most stable camera they have ever seen, but the variable bitrate is too low and the preamp for audio is terrible.
  4. Nikon D500: Not a very good video camera. Nothing really more to say than that.

Conclusion: The Fujifilm X-T3 is the only camera that can handle pretty much anything.

Photons to Photos: Fujifilm X-E3 vs X-T3 vs X-T2 vs X-Pro2

Photons to Photos released their results for the Fujifilm X-E3 and you can very much tell that the Fujifilm X-E3, X-T2, and X-Pro2 use the same sensor from their results. You can manipulate the graph here. The Fujifilm X-E3 should have more than enough dynamic range to satisfy the majority of photographers.

Fujifilm Discontinues Fujifilm X Magazine?

A reader reached out to Fujifilm to see what’s going on with Fujifilm Magazine and he received a surprising reply. It seems Fujifilm is going to fold the magazine into a website, which might be https://fujifilmxgfx.com/. This is an interesting development since many of Fujifilm’s marketing websites are run by advertising agencies that reach out to Fujifilm Photographers for content. I only know this because some have reached out to me to feature some of my work.

I personally really enjoy the Fujifilm Magazine and hope this doesn’t end up being the case, but Fujifilm is overdue for a new issue. For a while, they were almost monthly issues, but we have only seen two this year and the magazine appears to be dead.
