Fujinon Premista Cine Lens Craftsmanship

Fujifilm seems to be very proud of their technical achievements in recent months. The Fujifilm GFX100 and Premista are two extremely well-received innovations that others can’t compete with yet. They even released a short film a few weeks ago with a behind the scenes to demonstrate the cinematic characteristics of the Premista which we covered here.

Today Fujifilm followed up with the above video giving us a quick look inside the Inspecting, Coating, Cementing, Painting, Grinding, Assembling, and Optical Adjustment process along with a few statements from employees. Fujifilm believes the new Premista lenses will rival the best of primes throughout its zoom range and they go through great lengths to ensure consistency each lens performs at exactly the same level.

PROJECT REAL: Fujifilm GFX100 India Launch Project

Fujifilm India posted more PROJECT REAL videos after the Fujifilm GFX100 was announced in India the other day. It’s interesting the archival properties that Fujifilm is trying to pitch to photographers along with the creative opportunities.

While the videos aren’t terribly informative they do demonstrate some creative ways in which the 102MP sensor can be fully utilized. You can read more about the announcement event here.

Fujifilm India GFX100 Launch Event: It’s Time to Double The Game The #Revoultion100 is Here

Fujifilm launched the GFX100 in India officially and they put together an over hr long event that you can view above or you can learn about it below. They are also pushing the hashtags #Revoultion100 and #TheKingOfMirrorless now with this event.

Intro

  • 1934 started selling film and now a huge conglomerate
  • Constantly contributed to science, society, environment, etc…
  • Fujifilm has an emphasis on innovation
  • GFX100 and Primista being launched together
  • 8 gfx lenses now
  • Fujifilm achieved their goals in India since last year
  • Fujifilm hopes to double sales in India by next year
  • They think the market shrinking is because of a lack of fantastic products
  • Cameras need to be developed to be more unique and cutting edge
  • Mirrorless has unlimited possibilities
  • GFX100 and Primista are their cutting edge
  • First fantastic 100MP camera
  • Very light and portable for medium format

Toshihisa Lida

  • Optics
    • Large format is raising horizons for photos and video
    • Optical started 6 years after their establishment so 79 years of experience in optics
    • Shows off a 20cm lens used for broadcast
    • The surface of glass that big needs to be super smooth for 4k and 8k
    • The surface is engineered to 30 nano meters
    • The glass is like 603km across India and the tolerance would be 2.1mm across the lens so if you found one spot more than that it wouldn’t be qualified
    • The lens has 40 elements like that throughout
    • Normally each piece of glass in a lens eats 4% of the light, but their coating reduces this to 0.4% reduction each, which lets them lead 4k/8k
    • Only Fujifilm and Canon can do 4k/8k
    • Only Fujifilm can make a 20cm lens like they are talking about
    • They will reduce ultra-long zoom security cameras that can capture a license plate 3km away
  • Color Science
    • They have 85 years of experience in color science
    • Showed off the X-T3 color science compared to others
    • GFX100 has the same great color science
  • GFX
    • How Full is Full Frame
    • GFX is 70% bigger and upgraded to 100MP now
    • It’s kind of odd that we use medium format since it’s really a large format in modern digital times
    • GFX sales keep growing especially once GFX50R was released
    • GFX100 takes GFX to the next level
    • The GFX100 preorders are very high and probably about twice what was expected
    • GFX100 will be very popular among professionals and amateurs alike
    • GFX lenses are selling well in line with camera sales
    • 100MP is called overkill by some
    • 100MP is good for preserving photos for the future
    • They are preparing for future display formats and print types
    • 20 years ago no one imagined 4k and 8k at home
    • 20 years later it might all be way more
    • Things that matter should be photographed at 100MP to preserve for future formats
    • The photodiode has been improved to collect more light
    • The new BSI sensor uses copper that transfers data 60% faster than the old aluminum designs
    • The faster transfer is good for 4k video, Autofocus speed and minimizing noise
    • Image quality is stunning
    • You can crop and edit without worrying
    • Goes up to 102,400 ISO with acceptable noise
    • Up to 14 stops of dynamic range
    • 16-bit output to make photographers happy
    • What was once medium format is no longer slow
    • Can process almost 1gb per second of information
    • AF 0.05 sec
    • As fast or faster than most DSLRs
    • Latest fast and eye technology that was introduced in the X-T3/X-T30 fully incorporated in the GFX100
    • You won’t worry about low light with the GFX100
    • Can AF at up to -2EV
    • IBIS allows anyone to shoot handheld at 1/8th
    • The tolerances 0.04% 20/55,000th is required to produce 100MP of resolution with this camera
    • Impressive demo photo from a helicopter showing off IBIS
    • 50mm f/3.5 is very light and still gives you 102MP
    • 50mm f/3.5 is only 335g
    • 50mm f/3.5 is only 1,100g with GFX50R attached
    • Next lens will be the GF45-100mm
  • Primista
    • Premista covers Vista Vision 46.3mm
    • Premista is 28% smaller and 46% lighter than the Premier series that just covers super 35mm
    • The 8-250 Primista stays at T2.9 until 200mm where is gradual ramps down to T3.5
    • Premista covers all the “large formats”
    • Zoom instead of primes because it’s better for video demands
    • There are about 30 lenses in the Premista
    • Premista uses some really unique aspherical lenses that are ground by hand
    • Assembly requires perfect alignment
    • Premista covers GFX and it’s a fantastic video camera
    • Shows off how it works around 50 minutes into the above video
  • Dabboo Ratnani comes on stage to show some work
    • Cares the most about speed
    • Hasn’t touched DSLR since moving to Fuji
    • Loves having the film look back
    • Great skin tones and great for capturing movement
    • Incredible focus speed
    • Best EVF I have ever seen
    • Most camera upgrades are just one feature and GFX100 is many
    • Great dynamic range
  • Zack Arias
    • Now a GFX global ambassador
    • Started with film and back in the day professionals shot medium format and amateurs 35mm
    • 35mm only became popular with professionals because of digital
    • 7-8 years ago he saw a photo that stood out to him and it was because they used medium format, which is why he bought a phase one, which took him 3 years to save for IQ140
    • Zack moved up to the XF system at a crazy cost
    • He wanted the 50MP but phase one gave him the 100MP to try and he kept it
    • When you shoot 100MP it’s hard not to pixel peep
    • He jokes that clients DNA can be extracted from the GFX100’s photos
    • The detail and dynamic range of medium format is crazy
    • The dynamic range is king for him
    • Shows a blown-out photo of vanilla ice that he saved thanks to dynamic range
    • He messed up because the sun came out
    • The dynamic range has saved him because sometimes he has to get a shot in 2 minutes where he normally would want much more
    • He then shows the corrected image and you can even see the stitching in his hat
    • Then he shows something underexposed because his flash didn’t fire and how well they can be recovered
    • Normally recovering a photo like he did would have tons of noise, but with the GFX100 it’s clean
    • Of course, the projector they are using isn’t good enough to show off 100MP
    • Zack dropped Canon Full Frame for Fujifilm APS-C and he preferred them so he was fine with the format
    • The difference between Canon and Fujifilm with different sensor sizes is minimal printed
    • Lots of people tell him they want full-frame and then they will go Fujifilm
    • Zack says look at the GFX as their full-frame camera
    • If you want full frame you want a small sensor
    • Phase One requires a tripod 95% of the time
    • There is no ability to move the focus point in Phase One also focus and recompose has very tight tolerances
    • Most photographers can shoot GFX100 without a problem, but not Phase One
    • Great fast workflow for 100MP files using JPEG
    • GFX100 costs 1/5th what Phase One does ($50k) for the same image quality
    • GFX100 is only $10k
    • Zack might leave Phase One now that the GFX100 has arrived
  • Q&A
    • GFX100 is great in low light down to -2EV
    • 4k Video comes from over 60MP to reduce noise
    • Didn’t really answer questions about jello effect
    • Directed the people asking technical questions to pursue them after
