Dustin Abbott: Fujinon XF8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR Review

If you’re interested in the current best discount for the X-H1 than you might want to know something about the bundled Fujinon XF8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR. Dustin Abbott has a very detailed image quality review above along with a good first look and the final review below of the XF8-16mm, but if you do not have time to watch these lengthy videos the key points can be found below about how the lens performs:

  • There is a fair amount of in-camera correction
  • A little bit of a mustache pattern left after correction, but you can correct it more pretty easily
  • It’s hard to frame things wide enough with a lens this wide and it’s easy to introduce distortion yourself
  • There is some vignetting that is corrected, but at base ISO it’s a none issue
  • 8mm center of the frame is excellent even at f/2.8, but it drops off towards the edge and especially in the corner
  • No centering issues
  • f/2.8 vs f/4 there is a more natural illumination across the frame so there is less vignetting and more light transmission
  • Contrast gets better at f/4
  • f/5.6 and f/8 aren’t better than f/4 so f/4 is probably the sweet spot on the X-T3
  • Extreme corners never really get very sharp
  • At 11.8mm the lens has similar characteristics to 8mm
  • 11.8mm f/4 is extremely sharp right up until the extreme edges and micro-contrast is improved
  • Some mild linear barrel distortion at 11.8mm, but mustache pattern is gone
  • f/5.6 at 11.8 has a slightly brighter more evenly illuminated image, but f/4 is still the sweet spot for this lens on the X-T3
  • 16mm has very little distortion leftover with no pattern
  • 16mm f/4 is more evenly illuminated than f/2.8
  • The contrast goes up at f/4 and 16mm that slightly improves over the f/2.8 with better corners than any other focal length
  • 16mm is the most even high-quality focal length and it does even improve a little bit at f/5.6 unlike other focal lengths with the X-T3
  • Sunstars are only ok by f/11
  • You wouldn’t want to shoot portraits with this lens
  • Things are well controlled for shooting interiors
  • CA is very well controlled
  • Chroma performance is great for astrophotography and there isn’t any in the center and almost none in the corners
  • Great lens for Astro
  • Very little to complain about this lens
  • Excellent sharpness across most of the frame and everything is very well controlled
  • To make a lens like this you have to make it large and expensive
  • Whatever Fujifilm has done between their optics and their profile they have basically nailed all of the optical shortcomings

Fujifilm X-H1 For $299 to $999!

Yesterday we posted our Sunday savings post, but today some combo deals are active that weren’t yesterday making the X-H1 $299 if you presume that the discount applies entirely to the body or see the body as disposable and the lenses as having a fixed price. Either way, this deal is pretty about as good as you will get for an X-H1 and the 8-16mm bundle is very tempting to me because I can always use a fourth Fujifilm camera body for $299 and I really want the XF8-16mm.

Fujifilm Registers FF190001

Fujifilm registered another camera the FF190001 today and Nokishita found it

Fujifilm’s “FF190001” has been registered with an overseas certification body. Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and Bluetooth installed. – nokishita

It’s widely believed the X-Pro 3 is the FF190002 that was registered over a month ago, so the FF190001 could be anything other than that. So it could be a X-E4, X-T?, X-H2, or even an entry level camera like the X-A. Personally I would really like to see a new X100 with a new 23mm f/2 lens. Others would really like to see a Fujifilm video camera since Fujifilm’s video took a leap in quality.

Fujifilm GFX100 Broken Grip Shutter Release Lock Follow Up

Fujifilm has been turning cameras around quickly that are part of the repair notice issued last month. Most repairs seem to take about 3 days in total, but a few have had to go in twice for repair. The few that have had to be serviced twice are probably partially why Fujifilm is extending the warranty on affected cameras to 2 years instead of one. This is not ideal and I would really like to see a free extension to 3-5 years, but at least it is something.

There are a few making a big deal about this error due to the price of the camera, but many other camera makes have had similar issues and not extended the warranty. Most notably the Leica M240 launched with camera strap lugs that would just come out and let the $7,000 Leica M240 fall freely to the ground unless you were lucky enough to catch the camera by the strap as it fell. This was made much worse by an almost month long turn around time for repair, so 3 days isn’t bad on a higher volume camera than the M.

Above you can see an example of how freely the vertical grip shutter release lock moves when the bearing comes out or is close to out. There is absolutely no resistance in turning the nob and the only stop in motion comes from the reflex of the switch no longer acting as a switch. If your camera is included in the list of serial numbers than you need to send your camera in, because if the bearing from the vertical grip shutter release lock gets loose inside the camera it can cause a lot more damage, which will likely take longer to repair.
