PhotoPXL On The Rocks: Fujifilm GFX100 Interview With Mike Bulbenko From Fujifilm

Kevin Raber and Jody Grober with PhotoPXL interview Mike Bulbenko from Fujifilm about the GFX 100. Below is a summary of the 30+ min interview.

  • Fujifilm released two 50mp cameras followed by the 102mp
  • Fujifilm designed the GF lenses to outperform the 102mp
  • The GFX100 is catching up to the GF lenses capabilities
  • New zoom coming next year and the prime this year 50mm
  • The 50mm f/3.5 is a medium format pancake
  • Fujifilm still makes film and medium format is a film concept
  • In the digital world, the GFX class size sensor is the large format
  • You can think of S as studio and R as roaming for the GFX50R/GFX50S
  • GFX battery lasts for 400 shots CIPA
  • The nobs were removed from the Fujifilm GFX100 for better weather sealing
  • The GFX100 lets you swap the wheels
  • At the 100MP level, Fujifilm expects that 50% of users will be tethering most of the time
  • USB-C tethering and you can power/charge the battery while it’s plugged in
  • There is a barrel plug around 15v
  • You can run the GFX100 off a ptap battery and a variety of other popular broadcast batteries
  • 10-bit cinema 4k internal and external
  • There has been a huge upswell of interest in filming with the GFX
  • There are only 2 camera models with larger sensors and the GFX is just below them
  • 16-bit sensor with full 16-bit files
  • 16-bit and 14-bit files are about the same size at 200MB and in TIFF format they are 600MB
  • Uncompressed files work faster than compressed on your computer
  • Use UHS-II in the GFX to clear the buffer quickly
  • Dual UHS-II slots
  • GFX100 does 5fps 14-bit raw and 1fps 16-bit raw
  • True 16-bit gives better color transitions than 14-bit
  • If you’re pushing and pulling a lot or shifting color a lot you will want to shoot 16-bit to avoid banding
  • Fujifilm offers lossless compressed and uncompressed RAW, but it only saves you about 10% of storage
  • There is no reason to not shoot compressed
  • Flash only syncs with a mechanical shutter
  • The electronic shutter is for outdoors and very high speeds
  • The electronic front curtain is a half and half that minimizes shutter shake by not using the front curtain, instead if uses the rear curtain to end the exposure
  • IBIS will work down to 1/8th of a second and is great with video or third party lenses
  • IBIS at it’s best is 5.5 stops of stabilization, but third party is up to 5 stops
  • Electronic shutters made the company that makes blimps go bankrupt last year
  • Optical stabilization works better than IBIS
  • If you turn off the OIS switch than stabilization is turned off altogether
  • Almost no reason to turn off stabilization even on a tripod because the floor is rarely stable
  • The vertical shutter button lock issue was a production issue that only affected a few cameras and the fix is free
  • Fujifilm generally does repairs quickly
  • Fujifilm GFX100 Histogram is based off the JPEG read out not the RAW
  • Film simulations will change how the histogram readout sees the scene
  • The only way to get exactly Fujifilm’s simulation is to plug your camera into X RAW Studio because it uses the camera’s processor
  • Fujifilm won’t give their color science to third parties because it is proprietary
  • Fujifilm GFX100 has PDAF/CDAF with full sensor coverage
  • Fujifilm GFX100 has mindboggling image quality
  • Resolution is a system there is glass and sensor together

I still don’t accept their explanation for removing the dials. My Fujifilm GFX50S handled rain just fine.

Ronin S: Adds Fujifilm XT2/XT3 Support With Latest Firmware Update

DJI Ronin S: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
DJI Ronin S Bundle: B&H Photo

DJI continues to promise and deliver Fujifilm camera support across their lineup of products, which is good news for Fujifilm Videographers. I hope they add Fujifilm GFX100 support in a future firmware update or it might even work already even if it isn’t being advertised yet.

You can read the release notes from the update below: Read More »

Fujifilm GFX Hasselblad Leaf Shutter Release

After Metabones announced their Hasselblad V to Fuji G mount adapter lots of readers asked me if it will fire the leaf shutter, which it won’t from my post. However, there is a way to use Hasselblad’s leaf shutter with the Fujifilm H Mount Adapter G and it’s even discounted on Amazon at the moment.

Below is a table of lenses that are confirmed to work with the official Fujifilm adapter, but I would also like to add that these lenses will only work up to 1/800th, which is much less than the leaf in Fujifilm’s X100 if you’re expecting the same experience. I really hope Fujifilm makes some leaf shutter lenses in the future, but until then the official Fujifilm adapter will have to do.

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Rumor Update: Beware of Clickbait, SEO Gaming, IBIS and New Details

Yesterday I shared details about Fujifilm’s new unique rear flip screen first and another site tried to copy me without copying me, which caused a lot of confusion relating to the SP-X mockup. The SP-X mockup is old and not a leak at all since it was shown off at an official Fujifilm event, but since that site, won’t link back to me and put a watermark on the photo when they posted it lots of readers made assumptions that were not true. THERE CURRENTLY IS NO PHOTO OF THE X-PRO3, just the above drawings.

Now that same site is saying that an IBIS X-Pro3 Rumor I shared is not real, but it’s a weibo rumor, not mine. Of interest if you follow through to the weibo link the poster was either bullied into saying it came from the offending site or they passed the buck, but who knows weibo has a lot of rumors and there’s a lot of bait and switch on there, which is why you give credit and move on when a rumor might be wrong.

The offending site has been copying everything I do here the best they can, but I primarily target a US audience, while they are very much European and their attempt to game the system has lead to a twitter ban which is kind of humous and I think I know why. Which brings us to today with multiple posts about nothing just to game Google’s SEO and make up for lost traffic. Well, I have some more details for readers.

NEW DETAILS
My source only handled the camera for a little bit, but I asked about the previous rumor from weibo and received the following:

“there is no ibis,I didn’t talk about it but  I think it has same processor, sensor etc.at x-t”

So it looks like the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will be exactly like the X-T3 with the exception of the flip screen, which isn’t a bad thing. If Fujifilm holds anything back I imagine it might be some of the video features in the X-T3, but I like the purist Leica like the design of the X-Pro3. As for a release date, we should see the camera in the coming months, but it should come before December. I will share more when I get more until then beware of multiple low detail posts meant to game google instead of inform readers.

In addition to those function updates introduced by both V1.30 (Gen2) and V3.10 (Gen1), v1.30 firmware also fixed a bug in Gen2 adapters.

Make sure you download the correct file for the corresponding product. For Gen1, i.e. EF-FX Pro and EF-FX, you need firmware file named EFFX****.BIN. For Gen2, i.e. EF-FX Pro II, you need firmware file named EFX2_****.BIN. Using the wrong file will not damage your adapter. But it will not install.

Please visit our official website to download the new firmware, release notes and user’s manual.

To upgrade your adapter, connect it to a computer through a USB Micro B cable. Copy the corresponding firmware (.BIN file) to the emerged drive named “FRINGER”. Wait for 20 seconds. The adapter will upgrade itself.
