Fujifilm To Release Firmware Update For The FUJIFILM X-T3

Fujifilm to release firmware update for the FUJIFILM X-T3
Enabling video shooting control from Gimbal / Drone and offering other feature enhancements
November 13, 2019
FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) plans to release a series of firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-T3 (hereinafter “X-T3”), starting in mid-December 2019. The updates reflect requests of additional features and operability improvement, received from users of the X Series of mirrorless digital cameras.

The upcoming update will enable controls for video recording from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications. You can combine the X-T3 with a Gimbal / Drone that supports this function to significantly broaden your shooting options. FUJIFILM is in communication with SZ DJI Technology Col, Ltd.* and ZHIYUN** (listed in the alphabetical order) about their plan to release compatible products. Fujifilm also plans to deploy this function to the FUJIFILM X-T30 and other models. Further firmware updates in the future will bring autofocus enhancement and other improvements to the X-T3.

Main features:
■ Firmware update for the X-T3, due to be released in December 2019
Firmware version: FUJIFILM X-T3(Ver. 3.10)

Gimbal / Drone support***

This firmware adds the following function to complement the current support for still image shooting via USB communications:

  • Starting and ending video recording
  • Adjusting exposure settings (exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation) for video recording
  • Making manual focus adjustments

■ Firmware update for the X-T3, due to be released in January 2020
Firmware version: FUJIFILM X-T3(Ver. 3.20)

1. Enhanced autofocus

  • Improving the tracking performance of the eye AF frame, making it easier to attain accurate autofocus on the eyes
  • Improving face-detection performance when there are faces of different sizes within the same frame, making it easier to attain accurate autofocus
  • Improving autofocus capability on a foreground subject even when there is a mixture of foreground and background subjects within a frame, causing the foreground subject to go out of focus, e.g. when shooting flowers against a busy background

2. Capability to save up to 9,999 pictures in each folder

Until now, the number of pictures that can be saved in a folder on an SD card was limited to 999. This update will raise the limit by ten times to 9,999 pictures.

DPR: Fujifilm X-Pro3 Review – Brings Home Silver Award

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 has been a controversial release that photographers seem to love or hate, but one thing is certain the camera is unique. Unique in a good or bad way is up to you, but DPReview released their review of the X-Pro3 and gave it a Silver award so the controversial back screen didn’t affect its score much. You can read the full review here or just check out the summary here.

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Excellent image quality
  • Range of attractive film/color modes
  • Optical viewfinder gives interesting experience
  • Electronic viewfinder further boosts flexibility
  • Flip-down screen excellent for waist-level shooting
  • Attractive, detailed 4K video
  • USB charging is useful
  • Faux film stock sub monitor is undeniably cool
  • Optical finder doesn’t work as well with wide or long lenses as predecessor
  • Obscured rear screen limits some styles of shooting
  • AF point indication in OVF makes near-to-far parallax shift unpredictable
  • Some lenses (particularly the F1.4s) aren’t especially fast to focus, undermining the the immediacy of street shooting
  • Face/Eye detection mode a little prone to false-positives and requires input if your subject temporarily turns away
  • ISO dial is more decorative than utilitarian

Fujifilm FY2020 H1: Strong GFX100 Sales, While Instax Sales Are Down and Revenue Declined by 12.4%

Imaging Solutions
In the Imaging Solutions segment, consolidated revenue amounted to ¥154.1 billion (down 12.4% from the same period of the previous fiscal year).

Consolidated operating income amounted to ¥10.1 billion (down 53.0% from the same period of the previous fiscal year).

In the photo imaging business, revenue declined due to such factors as decreased sales of color paper. For instant photo systems, which enable users to enjoy on-the-spot printing of photos, sales of instax mini LiPlay, the hybrid instant camera launched in June 2019, were strong both in Japan and overseas. Its excellent portability with a compact and lightweight body, the print function from smartphones and the sound function that can record audio along with photos are gaining popularity. In October 2019, we launched instax mini Link, a printer that can print images taken with smartphones on instax film. In the value-added printing business, the cloud photo service FUJIFILM PhotoBank was launched in May 2019.

In the electronic imaging field of the optical device and electronic imaging business, revenue declined due to such factors as decreased sales of entry-level digital cameras, although sales were strong for middle and high-end models such as FUJIFILM GFX100, a mirrorless digital camera equipped with a large format sensor with the world’s highest 102 million pixels resolution, launched in June 2019. In Septermber 2019, FUJINON Lens GF50mmF3.5 R LM WR, a compact prime lens weighing just 335g, was added to the lineup as an interchangeable lens for the GFX series. The lineup of 10 lenses in total covers a broad range of shooting conditions, offering users a joy of shooting with the GFX series.

In the optical device field, revenue decreased as the demand for industrial lenses such as on-vehicle lenses declined mainly due to economic slowdown in China. Fujifilm is enhancing the deployment of new products for business growth such as FUJIFILM PROJECTOR Z5000, a projector that drastically expands the flexibility for installation with a rotatable lens, and the Premista series of zoom lenses for cinema cameras compatible with large format sensors, launched in April 2019.
