Three Fujifilm Cameras Make National Geographic’s Best New Compact Cameras For Travelers List

Fujifilm’s “niche” market has grown a lot over the past few years as they figure out how best to present their cameras to different segments of the photography community. Last year National Geographic recognized the X-T3, X-Pro3, and X100F as being a top travel camera, and this year they have given 3 Fujifilm cameras the honor of being picked as The Best New Compact Cameras For Travelers for 2020.

“cameras should be unassuming participants that enhance the travel experience, rather than distract from it. This camera also has the same great sensor and autofocus (AF) system as the X-T3 but in a package that further pushes Fujifilm’s film simulation ethos.”

Fujifilm X-T3: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

“This camera can go toe to toe with professional full-frame (FF) mirrorless and pro DSLRs in performance, autofocus, image quality, and handling.”

Fujifilm X100F: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

“This camera is small enough to fit inside a large pocket or a tiny camera bag and comes with a fixed 35mm-equivalent lens (you can also get two adapter lenses). The fixed lens has one of my favorite attributes—a leaf shutter. That means a remarkably quiet shutter for shooting in locations like cathedrals and the ability to sync flash with the shutter at a high speed.”

More Details About The Possibly Canceled Fujifilm X-H2: Updated

While others are interpreting and republishing our original rumor here I verified what is happening with my 100% accurate source. It looks like the Fujifilm X-H line might be canceled

“there will be fujifilm meeting in Europe at the end of November and information about XH2 will become clear at the European meeting”

It sounded a bit up in the air, but when I followed up about the meeting I was able to verify that the fate of the X-H2 was being decided at the meeting. It seems there is some disagreement at Fujifilm with a large part of the company wanting to move on and abandon the X-H line while a minority wants to resurrect the X-H line as something more differentiated from the current X-H1. FYI my source shoots X-H1 so they would likely want the line to continue.

Maybe we will know in Dec or January what is happening, but the Fujifilm XT4 details seem to be accurate at the very least so far.

Update: When I posted the original rumor there were a few reports from retailers about the X-H1 being discontinued. Today there seem to be many more reports of customers asking retailors if the X-H1 will be restocked and customers being told the XH was being discontinued. So grab an X-H1 now if you want one…

DPRTV: APS-C Buyers Guide Fujifilm X-T30, Canon M6 Mk II, Sony a6400, and Nikon Z50

DPRTV put out their holiday buyers’ guide for APS-C mid-range compact cameras. Surprisingly Fujifilm went from being a camera that was often dead last for capturing video to being top of its class. Fujifilm also has the best glass and glass selection here by far. Maybe we will see a similar jump in Fujifilm’s AF performance with their next generation of cameras. Thankfully Fujifilm AF is only slightly below the rest at a distance, but it has improved with each firmware update over the years.

  2. Sony a6400

At the end of the day, photography is largely about the glass you use and Fujifilm’s APS-C lens line up is killer. Even Fujifilm kit lenses are fantastic compared to the competition.

X-Pro3 Stories #5 Over the Top

Previous Fujifilm X-Pro3 Stories:

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Stories #3: Aged or Damaged
Fujifilm X-Pro3 Stories #4 Love of Photography

The unique design of the Fujifilm X-Pro3 has been contentious, but Fujifilm is trying to making additional effort to differentiate their cameras. The design of the Fujifilm X-Pro3 seems to be something that people love or hate, but it fits well within Fujifilm’s design philosophy.

While the relationship between hardware and software is symbiotic, basically it’s hardware that comes first: only after the hardware is created can software be developed to suit, and consequently, the hardware can reach its full potential only when the software is complete. What I’m trying to say is that the X-Pro3’s focus system was developed to maximize the performance of a fourth-generation sensor and processor and that the autofocus system is essential given the nature of the X-Pro3.

If I had to define a field of use for the X-Pro3, I would no doubt place street photography, photojournalism, and documentary photography at the top. All call for a compact, light camera that can be used under any conditions once a subject is found; indeed, a camera that may be called upon by photographers who have to dive into one tough situation after another in search of photographs of things one doesn’t ordinarily see—tough situations that may well include both harsh natural environments and rough terrain, or crossing cultural barriers. That’s right: what photography requires above all is access to the subject. And once you have access, what then? How will the camera support you? This was the engineer’s theme for this camera, and as you will probably have already guessed, it is the phase-detection autofocus system that functions in environments as dark as −6 EV. This is what lets you take the X-Pro3—and do your job—anywhere.

While the Fujifilm X-Pro3 might not be much different than an X-T3 on paper Fujifilm is obviously happy with their advancements in their new AF system which will help photographers. Fujifilm is even providing transparency about how they measure low light AF performance in their official materials to help photographers better know what to expect.

In calculating EV, we define 0 EV as the exposure achieved in 1 second (1″) at ISO 100 with an aperture of F1.

−1 EV = ISO 200, F1, 1″
−2 EV = ISO 400, F1, 1″
−3 EV = ISO 800, F1, 1″

The above is the specification for the X-T3, and is already a perfectly adequate level of performance, allowing snapshots to be taken at night without difficulty. Nevertheless, let’s try continuing the sequence:

−4 EV = ISO 1600, F1, 1″
−5 EV = ISO 3200, F1, 1″
So, −6 EV = ISO 6400, F1, 1″

For an X Mount system lens that supports an aperture of F1, you’d need an XF50mmF1, so for practical purposes settings of ISO 1600, F1.4, and 2″ would be needed for −6 EV.

Any real-world situation in which such settings would be required for optimal exposure would be a very dark one indeed. These are probably not settings you’d use for photographs taken under a full moon but are more those that might be required in an unlit alley or for scenes lit by starlight on a moonless night.

PDAF AF has drastically improved mirrorless AF in recent years and it looks like Fujifilm is pushing even more performance out of their current X-Trans design. Hopefully, Fujifilm can catch Sony soon in mirrorless AF performance, which is the only area they still fall behind.

I can only say that this miracle would not have been possible without the magic hands of the engineers. The X-Pro3’s autofocus uses information from phase-detection pixels embedded in the imaging sensor. The placement of these pixels on the imaging sensor is what makes accurate focus possible, but the sensor is not used only for focus—as an imaging sensor, it has another crucial role it must fill, namely, creating the image.

At low light levels, pixels with color filters—the pixels used for imaging—function in their normal role, while the phase-detection pixels, which lack color filters, operate in a different sequence to maximize exposure time to produce a sufficiently strong signal even under low light.

Not only that, but this is the level of performance the sensor can achieve just with the current lens lineup. With the XF50mmF1 (in development) I mentioned above, a performance of 1 stop better (−7 EV) becomes possible.

Fujifilm should add the AF system from the X-Pro3 to the X-T3 in the future via a firmware update, but they might make us wait a while to increase sales. Until then we will have to wait and see if their new AF system lives up to the hype.

Fujifilm X-T4 Details and X-H2 May Never Come

A new source contacted me today that claims to have accurate inside information that sounds plausible to me so I have decided to share it with readers.

He says Fujifilm will not make an X-H2 ever because it isn’t a unique enough product to sell well and Fujifilm feels it was a mistake to make. Instead, the Fujifilm X-T4 will get IBIS. This seems very plausible and while it is possible that the H line up could come back if Fujifilm can come up with a unique design for it they believe it is highly unlikely.

X-T4 details
It should be about 1/3 of an inch thicker and about 5-6oz heavier.
6k60p and 10-bit internal
Anamorphic Ratio Support
Probably fully articulating flippy screen like the S1H
IBIS

None of this would be overly surprising since the announcement of the Fujifilm X-T3 basically killed X-H1 sales overnight. Fujifilm really should stick with one flagship DSLR style camera and one flagship rangefinder-style camera just like they always did before X-H1. The Fujifilm X-H1 was nice, but I do not think many that used one felt that it was much better than the X-T and if the size of the X-T increases slightly and gets IBIS while maintaining it’s price point most should be more than happy.

Hopefully, we will get more updates soon from my other sources and if you have any additional information feel free to contact me through our contact page or groups on Facebook…
