Fujifilm GFX50R vs Hasselblad X1D II

Fujifilm disrupted the medium format camera market when they released the Fujifilm GFX50S and followed it with the 50R. In fact Fujifilm was so far ahead of the competition that Hasselbad quickly abandoned the original X1D and followed it with the X1D II, which by most accounts is a significant improvement over the original, but we haven’t seen a lot of comparisons. Above is a pretty good one and I have summarized it below:

  • X1D II is mainly screen driven and small
  • GFX50R has a lot of dials like a giant rangefinder
  • Both have the same Sony Sensor
  • The color science of each company is what will make the difference
  • Fujifilm much warmer and a little darker
  • Hasselblad can be a little warm sometimes too
  • An incredible amount of detail and tonality from both
  • Hasselblad has a more true to life tonality, but the Fujifilm has a very nice warm to cool tonality
  • Both have great color science
  • Hasselblad has richer color in high ISO
  • High ISO is very similar but the softer grain in the Hasselblad
  • Hasselblad can flash sync up to 1/2000th but Fujifilm you cannot without HSS otherwise you’re stuck at 1/125th
  • If you shoot with strobes the Hasselblad might be the better camera for you
  • When you mess with the color you can make them look similar
  • When recovering shadows the Fujifilm gets a little green, but the Hasselblad gets magenta splotches
  • Fujifilm has sharper grain
  • Toss up with dynamic range, with maybe an edge to Fujifilm for holding detail in the shadows
  • Fujifilm is big with big lenses with a nice tactile nature
  • Hasselblad is small and compact like a true mirrorless platform, but wish it had more dials
  • Fujifilm fastest AF
  • Hasselblad slow hunting AF
  • Hasselblad has great color
  • If your work is slow and deliberate Hasselblad might be your preference
  • If you need speed Fujifilm is the way to go
  • Both have strong image quality, detail, and color
  • Hard to pick a winner unless you shoot a lot of strobes

Laowa Expanded Their Cinema Lens Lineup Today

I have become a big fan of Laowa glass over the past few years and I am looking forward to their less mainstream offerings. You can check out their cinema lens lineup here, but as of right now the only new lens native to X-Mount is the Laowa 9mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine.

This exciting prime lens provides ultra wide-angle coverage up to 113° angle of view (100° on MFT system). The tiny size & light weight match perfectly with mirrorless cameras and are suitable for use with gimbals. The new Cine version comes with standard 0.8 mod gears on both aperture and focus rings. A standard 55mm filter thread is designed to mount screw-in filters easily. 2 aspherical elements plus 3 extra-low dispersion elements successfully correct chromatic aberration, realize close-to-zero distortion & deliver excellent corner to corner sharpness.

There is also a new adaptable PL Mount Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine

The new 12mm lens is currently the widest t/2.9 lens that can cover sensor up to both full frame & vista vision size (wider than full frame), making it one of the ideal wide angle option for both professional cinema cameras and mirrorless cameras.

Features

– Full Frame / Vista Vision coverage
– Close to zero distortion
– 122 degrees FoV
– Super Compact
– EF or PL or E mount available
– Step-up to 114mm for matte box installation
