Fujifilm Juneteenth Statement Followup – An Update on Our Partnerships

Fujifilm released a statement for Juneteenth this year like many other companies. They are now following up with how that statement is affecting their partnerships around the world.

An Update on Our Partnerships
As part of our commitment to be more representative of our community, we’ve decided to reevaluate our relationships with various photographic organizations. We are pleased to announce the plans we have for 2020 with photographic organizations that share our values of promoting diversity within the industry.

Diversify Photo: An organization with deep commitments to encouraging diversity in the photo industry, dedicated to providing the resources for people in the photography business to do just that. In partnership with Diversify, we’re sponsoring grants as part of the Pulitzer Center’s Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant program, for stories that “cover the systemic, underreported issues of our time, including police brutality, the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, environmental racism, food insecurity, the opioid crisis, and beyond.”

National Press Photographers’ Foundation (NPPF): NPPF’s mission is “advancing photojournalism through education and awarding scholarships and fellowships to deserving individuals who have demonstrated ability or promise in the field of visual journalism”. We are thrilled to offer an exciting scholarship (and some brand new gear) to “an undergraduate student with a preference for HBCU colleges with portfolio emphasis on visual or multi-media storytelling”.

Bronx Documentary Center (BDC): BDC is a non-profit gallery and educational space located in the Bronx, New York. As mentioned on their website, “through exhibitions, screenings, and public programming, BDC shows the work of internationally-renowned and emerging photographers and filmmakers who are dealing with the themes that guide the BDC: justice, education, community-building, and positive social change”. As part of Fujifilm’s long standing partnership with BDC, we’ve grown our support to include:

  • One-time college scholarships awards and new camera kits for the 10 outgoing Bronx Junior Photo League (BJPL) graduates.
  • A sponsorship towards the Bronx Documentary Center’s annual photo review, which coincides with the 3rd annual Latin American Foto Festival (LAFF). Fujifilm’s sponsorship will cover scholarships for 5 LAFF photographers and 5 Bronx photographers
  • A sponsorship of Bronx Documentary Center’s annual photo auction

We are proud to support these organizations in their efforts to increase access to photography for creators, no matter their background or circumstances. Make sure to check out their social media to see how you can get involved today.

Video IBIS Comparison: Fujifilm X-T4 vs Panasonic GH5 vs Olympus E-M1 III vs Sony a6600

Image source did a video IBIS comparison of 4 popular crop sensor cameras the Fujifilm X-T4, Panasonic GH5, Olympus E-M1 III, and Sony a6600 at 24p and 60p. For this comparison, they used 35mm equivalent and 50mm equivalent lenses. All footage is 1080p using a rig designed for all 4 cameras so that they experience the same motion/vibration. Above is the video and below is the summary:

Test 1 Handheld Panning at 35mm 24fps

  • All four handle it with relative ease (Sony looks like it is chugging a bit imo)

Test 2 Smooth Driving Vehicle at 50mm 24fps

  • All cameras hand this situation well, but there are a few hiccups (Again the Sony looks the worst to me)

Test 3 Strolling Down The Road at 35mm 24fps

  • Reasonably difficult test and GH5 does the best followed by E-M1 III (The GH5 almost looks like a gimbal is being used)

Test 4 Following a Bicycle From a Bicycle at 50mm 60fps

  • Both 4/3 cameras and the X-T4 do a good job here on this simple test (a6600 is really bumpy here while the others are pretty smooth)

Test 5 Bumpy Golf Cart on a Smooth Road at 35mm 24fps

  • Slightly tougher test GH5/a6600 are having problems while E-M1 III and X-T4 start smooth, but the last part of the test only the E-M1 III handles well, but the X-T4 does well in parts

Test 6 Bumpy Golf Cart on a Smooth Road II at 35mm 60fps

  • Similar test at 60fps, which the GH5/E-M1III/X-T4 all handle well, but the X-T4 has some hiccups and the a6600 can’t handle the situation at all

Test 7 Bumpy Golf Cart on Bumpy Bridge 50mm 60fps

  • Fairly difficult test for all of them with E-M1 III handling it the most smoothly and the X-T4/GH5 doing fairly well especially in the end

Test 8 Bumpy Golf Cart on Bumpy Bridge II 35mm 24fps

  • The rig is on the golf cart now and all of the cameras have some level of difficulty with the bumps with the E-M1 III doing the best followed by the X-T4/GH5

Conclusion and Ranking

  1. Olympus E-M1 III – Handled all of the tests quite well and performed the best in most of them especially the toughest tests with a very fluid IBIS system
  2. Panasonic GH5 – Best for walking which gives it #2 because it is a common use case and it handles drives quite well
  3. Fujifilm X-T4 – Handles handheld panning and smooth driving scenes well, but isn’t quite as good for walking, but still handles it well
  4. Sony a6600 – Can handle easy panning and smooth driving, but it jumps around when conditions get bumpy

Image resource didn’t have the latest firmware on the Fujifilm X-T4 (1.02), which improves IBIS performance considerably, so it should do even better today. Personally I would say the X-T4 matched the GH5, but I agree that the Olympus E-M1 III did the best in every respect except for the walking test, in which the GH5 offers gimbal-like performance. I am really impressed with Fujifilm’s IBIS and how it has improved since the Fujifilm X-H1. I am also a bit shocked at how bad the IBIS is on the Sony a6600.

Fujifilm X-T4 vs Nikon Z5 vs Sony a7III

Today Nikon released their Z5 camera, which is an incredibly affordable mirrorless full-frame camera, but it does have some shortcomings as you can see above. The only detail that is hidden in all the specs is that Nikon is using a slow readout sensor that is bad for video and electronic shutter.

Nikon has made some interesting choices with this camera and I think it will sell very well as an entry-level camera for Nikon, but is cheap full-frame more desirable than quality APS-C? Sony could probably push down the price of the Sony a7III to compete with the Nikon Z5, but the Sony a7III is a full-featured mirrorless camera with world-class AF.

The Fujifilm X-T4 is their current flagship camera and I am using it for comparison with the Nikon Z5 simply because some Full Frame snobs think that APS-C can’t compete with Full Frame cameras. It is a little more expensive, but if you want a matching price point you could get a Fujifilm X-T3 or X-T30 even.

Fujifilm and Sony both haven’t refreshed their entry-level cameras in a while now. Fujifilm should release an updated Fujifilm X-T40 and X-E4 soon, while the Sony a7III is getting pretty old and it will likely be replaced with a Sony a7IV soon too. The biggest question about the future models going forward is how will COVID-19 and any future inflation or taxes influence release dates and price points.

The Fujinon XF16-55mm f/2.8 was substantially discounted $300 last month as part of Fujifilm’s Spring Savings, but it looks like Amazon didn’t get the notice that the sale is over and it is not part of the Summer Savings. So if you wanted one of these lenses don’t miss out. Fujifilm generally only discounts then $100-200.
