BlackMagic RAW and Fujifilm GFX100/GFX100S Plus ProRes RAW vs BRAW

Fujifilm only recently added support for the Blackmagic Video Assist 7″ 12G HDR and Blackmagic Video Assist 5″ 12G HDR, but there hasn’t been much said until now. For those interested Fujifilm added a brief video to its YouTube showing off some of the advantages of shooting 12-bit Blackmagic RAW with the Fujifilm GFX100S. The above video claims that  Blackmagic RAW is lightweight and very easy to work with, but I would have liked to have seen a true comparison with Apple ProRes so I included some videos below under the Make-up is session video.

I personally prefer ProRes RAW and Atomos Recorders which are currently on sale, but if your workflow includes DaVinci Resolve then BRAW might be best for you. There are some slight differences between the formats that will matter to pixel peepers, but pixel-peeping frames of video isn’t a good use of time for most since the motion of the frames hides a lot. If I were picking a RAW format of choice for a video my decision would be based on my chosen editor, which at this time is Final Cut Pro so ProRes RAW is ideal for me.

First Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 Review Posted: Delayed Until 2022 But Worth The Wait

The Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 has been a long time coming, but it looks like samples have gone out and reviewers have been given permission to publish their reviews. The video is full of still and video samples so be sure to check it out, but if your time is limited there are excerpts below:

  • Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 can be useful for vlogging
  • Well packed lens
  • Nice snap cap and lens hood
  • Solid mount with a USB-C firmware update port on the bottom
  • Nice manual focus ring and clicked aperture that sounds a little plastic
  • f/1.4 to f/16
  • 22cm minimum focus distance
  • 67mm filter thread
  • Little large but only 420g
  • Good mix of high-quality plastics and metal
  • A lot of people will want to compare this to the Samyang 12mm AF
  • This lens is a keeper and even though it is large it still feels good even when vlogging
  • Not sure if it would hold up to extreme weather, but it does hold up to abuse well
  • Very well made for the price point
  • AF is excellent and locks on quickly
  • This is close to STM focus throw quality for video
  • This lens is super sharp maybe even too sharp
  • This is Viltrox’s sharpest lens
  • Wide-open it is very usable unless you’re worried about the edges
  • Colors render well but a little cool maybe
  • Bokeh is ok in the foreground and background
  • Not a pixel peepers’ lens
  • There is noticeable vignetting wide open that cleans up quickly
  • Some distortion
  • The lens performs really well stopped down
  • The flaws of this lens are only really noticeable up close on the street
  • There is some chromatic aberration
  • None of this should stop you from buying this lens
  • If you’re clinical this lens is probably not for you, but it is a great lens for everyone else
  • The price will be about $429 USD but there is nothing that compares to this lens on the market
  • The Samyang 12mm f/2 AF is the closest lens to this one, but it Is a very different lens
  • Should be great for Astro
  • Release pushed back to 2022

Best Third-Party Lenses of 2021 For X and G Mount

I shot a lot of Astro in 2020 and was getting a bit bored with my large first-party glass collection so I tried a few dozen third-party lenses that interested me throughout 2021. I hope to post more lengthy reviews of each lens in the future but I am still sorting through everything I shot in 2021. You can find more samples on my Instagram.

Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is an amazing lens on the Fujifilm GFX100 with minimal vignetting without a focal reducer and none with. It can resolve an impressive amount of detail and most of my favorite Milkyway captures were made using it on the GFX.

TTartisan 7.5mm f/2 Fisheye
The TTArtisan 7.5mm f/2 fisheye is incredibly sharp and only a mild fisheye on X-mount cameras. It’s great for single-shot Milkyway photography, but it is also very good up close. The TTArtisan 7.5mm f/2 stands out as one of the easiest to focus third-party lenses I own due to how bitingly sharp the lens can be.

IRIX 45mm f/1.4
The IRIX 45mm f/1.4 is a great lens that vignettes a little if you have IBIS turned on, but very little with IBIS turned off on the GFX100. You won’t find a wider faster native G-mount lens for the GFX at this time so this lens is unique. I hope we see more lenses like this from IRIX in the future because I have heard good things about IRIX glass on GFX.

TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25
TTArtisan made some of my favorite lenses this year and the TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 is one of the more unique because it out Leica’s the Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH for a fraction of the price. The TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 vignettes on the GFX100 a little so it is best to turn IBIS off when using it, but the bokeh can be amazingly creamy and glass this fast can be a lot of fun for low light and astrophotography.

Venus Optics Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO
Venus Optics made some of my favorite lenses last year, but they didn’t release many impressive lenses this year. The Venus Optics Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO is a lens for photographers that like character and flare. While this lens isn’t perfect it is reliably imperfect and can be used to create some interesting effects with off-center light sources.

Fujifilm GFX 100S In Stock!

The Fujifilm GFX100S is in stock on Amazon, but it won’t be for long so hurry if you want to grab one before the year ends. The Fujifilm GFX100S has been sold-out since its announcement in February, with inventory showing up for a few hours here and there. It’s a combination of high demand and the parts shortage so if you want one do not delay.
