Fujifilm TIPA 2022 Awards

Fujifilm didn’t release many cameras this year that could receive an award, but they did win best medium format camera for the Fujifilm GFX50SII.

Fujifilm GFX 50S II: B&H Photo / Amazon  / Moment / Adorama
Larger sensors offer the benefit of enhanced light gathering capability along with smooth color and tonal transitions, giving images what’s come to be characterized by many TIPA magazines as a special “medium format” look. This latest in Fujifilm’s medium format line holds a 51.4MP sensor and includes an in-body five-axis image stabilization system offering an impressive 6.5EV compensation, allowing for expanded low-light or slow shutter speed capture. For compositional freedom there’s a high resolution EVF and a 3-way tilting rear 3.2” 2.36m dot touchscreen LCD, plus numerous aspect ratio options ranging from 1:1 to 16×9. There’s 3 fps advance as well as Full HD 1080p video at various framing rates, plus a 117 point AF system with subject tracking, plus an improved algorithm for face and eye recognition.”

Tokina atx-m 56mm F1.4:  B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
With an equivalent focal length of 85mm on a full-frame camera, considered by many photographers as the prime “portrait” lens, this fast 56mm is also well suited to landscape, nature and candid street photography. TIPA editors remarked about how the F1.4 maximum aperture maximizes potential for low-light work, with the added bonus of the 9-bladed diaphragm yielding very pleasing bokeh effects, especially when images are made at the slightly under 2 ft (.60m) minimum focusing distance. For video, the lens provides very fast and silent AF operation, with a click-less aperture control. Another aspect of the lens that impressed the TIPA jury was how  well it matches up with the size and weight of APS-C camera bodies, weighing about 11 oz (315g) and 2.6 x 2.8 inches (65 x 72MM) in length, making it an excellent field companion.

Fujifilm Sigma Part 2: More X-mount Lenses to Come

Fujifilm posted X Talk #28 which is the second part of an interview that started here with  Sigma’s general manager Mr. Ozone and Fujifilm Manager Ueno. DC.life has covered it again so I do not have to rely on YouTube translate for this summary. I also watched the video and added some more myself. Below is a summary of the key points.

  • If you do not care about cost, size, and weight then increasing MTF resolution is not a problem
  • Fujifilm and Sigma have different special frequencies of MTF
  • In the MTF of APS-C lens, Sigma measures at 10 / mm 30 / mm, which is the same as full-frame lens, and Fujifilm measures at 15 / mm 45 / mm
  • Mr. Ueno says, “Fujifilm raises the hurdle and issues MFT at 15 and 45, so I think that Fujifilm is the cause of bad MTF.
  • On the other hand, Sigma says, “I have an image that 10 and 30 have become the world standard, so I’m taking over it for the time being,” said Mr. Ozone
  • Mr. Ueno wants sigma to release a compact lightweight standard zoom (24-70mm), telephoto zoom (70-200mm), and 40mm in 35mm equivalent
  • 40mm is very versatile and can be used for most shots
  • There is demand for anamorphic lenses, but they can have ghosting, distortion, lower resolution, and egg-shaped bokeh
  • Mr. Ueno thinks that resolution will become less of a priority and people will focus on their taste
  • Mr. Ozone wants more X-mount lenses and he wants X mount users to know that “I want them to enjoy the comparison between Sigma X lenses and Fujifilm X lenses.”
