OL: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DN DC Contemporary Review

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN:

B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Optical limits published its full review of the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DN DC Contemporary, which you can read in full here or you can check out the excerpt below:

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DN DC Contemporary is a pretty obvious choice if you want to have a lightweight, fast standard zoom lens without breaking your bank account. On Fujifilm’s 26-megapixel APS-C sensor, it is pretty sharp throughout the zoom range. However, it’s worth noting that the corner performance at 18mm is visibly worse when using the lens on 40 megapixels – this will apply to most zoom lenses, though. For the secondary image aspects (image distortions, CAs, vignetting), it relies heavily on digital corrections – probably due to the same compact design that makes the lens so appealing. The RAW figures aren’t overly impressive in these respects, especially with respect to vignetting. However, even so – from an end-user perspective, this isn’t overly relevant. While you may spot the effects of auto-correction when looking closely, the final quality of the image is still very fine. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good for a standard zoom lens, although you shouldn’t expect prime lens quality here.

The build quality is perfectly fine. The lens is tightly assembled without showing any wobbling when fully extended. Sigma’s TSC material feels nicer than other plastics that we have handled (I’m looking at you, Tamron). The dust- & moisture sealing is a bit on the basic side, but it’s better than nothing. As already mentioned before, it’s a tiny lens in the grand scheme of things, and we hope to see more Sigma lenses follow this design philosophy – after all, being smaller is a value proposition of APS-C format systems compared to full format. The AF is speedy and noiseless – no complaints here. For image stabilization, it relies on the camera. This is commendable because keeping a consistent lens alignment is difficult enough on standard zoom lenses.

While there are a few caveats, we really liked this small little fellow. It strikes a really nice balance between decent optical quality, solid construction and a very attractive price tag.

Irix Cine Lenses Coming to X-Mount

Irix release a new mount for all cine lenses

Irix, a high-class lens producer for the movie and photo industry enriches its Cine line by adding the Fujifilm X mount lenses.

Irix film optics are known, among other things, for a large selection of available mounts. Today, this already rich selection is expanded by one more system – Fujifilm X.

Lens choices for the Irix Cine set were dictated by the desire to create conditions for filmmakers to focus their efforts on the implementation of the material, not on the search for optics that will meet the requirements of all of the tasks. All the lenses are in the Irix Cine standard, which allows for the same effect throughout the range.faThey have unique bokeh but also they preserve colors and details to simplify work in post-production and give a unique character to the created material.

All the lenses have a unified design of the aperture and focusing rings and similar weight and size. Quick lens replacement without a rebalancing of the Steadicam or gimbal will allow You to quickly adapt to the current requirements of the filmed scene. When in need to add filters, most lenses come with 86mm filter thread and 95mm front diameter. They are also characterized by the ability to work in all weather conditions, the lenses have special sealings to protect them from dust, sand, or water.

The full lineup of Irix Cine lenses:

  • 11mm T4.3 lens
  • 15mm T2.6 lens
  • 21mm T.1.5 lens
  • 30mm T1.5 lens

Metabones Contax 645 to GFX and Canon FD to X-Mount Adapters Now Available From B&H Photo

B&H Photo listed the Metabones Contax 645 Mount to G-mount and Metabones Canon FD to X-Mount Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x. Both are special orders and the Canon FD adapter was announced a while ago, but the Contax 645 adapter is a pretty recent release. The specs are below:

Metabones Contax 645 Mount to G-mount

  • Contax C645 Lens to Fujifilm G-mount camera
  • Electronic control supported: Autofocus, Aperture control, and EXIF support,
  • LED indicator shows communication status.
  • PDAF camera support.
  • IBIS of camera support.
  • Aluminum alloy and brass construction with chromium plating.
  • Satin surface finish.
  • Detachable Arca-Type tripod foot compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins, and Photo Clam ball heads(clamp directly or attach to the quick-release plate by a 1/4″-20 screw).

Owners of legendary Carl Zeiss optics in Contax 645 Mount now have a trusted migration path to mirrorless cameras with Metabones® Contax 645 to Fujifilm GFX Smart Adapter and Metabones Contax 645 to Sony E-Mount Smart Adapter.

Get the ergonomic experience of the original Contax 645 camera by using the lens’ own aperture ring in aperture priority and manual exposure modes. Fully automatic exposure and shutter priority are also available. A customizable button on the E-Mount variant can be assigned to more than 50 different functions on many Sony cameras, including depth-of-field preview. A tripod foot compatible with Arca-Swiss-style quick release is included.

Metabones has a proven track record of firmware stability and timely firmware support. Firmware is user-upgradable via the Smart Adapters’ micro USB ports.

All Metabones Smart Adapters relay distance information from the lens to the camera body to enable 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The Contax 645 Makro-Planar 4/120 lens does not report distance information and supports only 3-axis in-body image stabilization.

When Contax 645 was launched in 1999 it was the most technologically advanced medium format camera at the time, and the first interchangeable lens medium format system with autofocus motors built into the lenses. These legendary Carl Zeiss lenses are now leveraging the latest and greatest mirrorless camera features and poised to benefit from further technological advances in the future.

Metabones Canon FD to X-Mount Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x

  • Parented 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass by Caldwell Photographic in the USA ;
  • Increase maximum aperture by 1 stop ;
  • Increase MTF ;
  • Makes lens 0.71x wider ;
  • Aluminum Alloy and Brass Construction with Chromium Plating ;
  • Satin Surface Finish ;
  • Detachable Arca-Type tripod foot compatible with Arca Swiss, Markins, and Photo Clam ball heads(clamp directly or attach to quick release plate by a 1/4″-20 screw).

Speed Booster ULTRA
Sharper corners, less distortion, reduced vignetting

New optical design:  advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tanatalum-based optical glass to achieve extraordinary optical performance with improved corner sharpness, distortion and reduced vignetting.

Like the revolutionary original Metabones Speed Booster announced in January 2013, the Speed Booster ULTRA has a magnification of 0.71x, and so it effectively reduces the crop factor of mirrorless cameras with DX-sized sensors, such as Sony E-mount and Fuji X-mount cameras, from 1.5x to 1.07x.  However, the new ULTRA design makes very effective use of exotic materials at the furthest limit of glassmaking technology, and as a result is well corrected for use with virtually all full-frame SLR lenses regardless of exit pupil distance. Thus, the Speed Booster ULTRA performs extremely well with professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses such as the 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms by Canon and Nikon to produce 17-50mm f/2.0 and 50-142mm f/2.0 high-speed zooms, respectively.  Similarly, high-speed fixed focal length lenses such as a 50mm f/1.2 will be transformed into a 35.5mm f/0.9 lens with excellent contrast and resolution from the center all the way to the edges of the image.
