Fujifilm GFX100 II Firmware 1.11 Released: Fixes EVF/Flash Compatibility

The Fujifilm GFX100 II launched with a bug that causes the GFX100II EVF to operate abnormally using some third-party flashes.

The firmware update Ver.1.11 from Ver.1.10 incorporates the following issue:
The firmware bug is fixed that the EVF display becomes abnormal using some other manufacturers’ flashes and commanders, such as Godox’s.

New BRIGHTIN STAR AF Large Aperture Lens Coming Soon

Xingyao Optics announced on their Weibo that they are working on a large aperture autofocus lens, but the mounts are unknown at this time. E/Z/X mounts have been pretty safe bets for Asian AF lenses though. BRIGHTIN STAR lenses can be found on their Amazon Store.

Fujifilm GFX50SII Discontinued Overseas, GFX100 Now Discontinued in US, and Thoughts About GFX

It looks like the Fujifilm GFX50II will be discontinued according to camera stores overseas and the GFX100 has been listed as discontinued in the US at B&H Photo and Adorama. This really isn’t surprising since the Fujifilm GFX100S has been very deeply discontinued, but it would have been nice to keep a 50MP medium format camera for $2,999 since Fujifilm will likely pivot back towards X-mount cameras in 2024.

We have seen the Fujifilm GFX50S, GFX50R, and now GFX50SII cease production pretty quickly compared to the Fujifilm GFX100 which has only recently started to show up as discontinued in US shops, which might be a bad sign for GFX fans. I know a lot of photographers loved the Fujifilm GFX50S, but the subsequent cameras lost a little something all the way up until the disappointing announcement of the GFX100 II.

I think Fujifilm needs to go back to the drawing board or risk killing the GFX line of cameras. The GFX50S was almost perfect and I sold all of my high-end full-frame gear to get one along with some excellent glass, but I haven’t bought much since the GFX100 because Fujifilm went in the wrong direction with the GFX100S and GFX100 II. Fujifilm needs an XT-style GFX camera to appease its core audience or they will risk losing users to other platforms.

Almost every major camera manufacturer now makes a retro camera or has one coming and these cameras are quite popular. If Fujifilm doubled down on the GFX50S I believe the medium format market would be a lot larger today, and Fujifilm would have a stronger argument against full-frame cameras. Fujifilm’s attempts to please every user to speed up the adoption of medium format has led to slowing growth, and no one being particularly happy or excited about GFX announcements.

There are only a few cameras that I have ever bought for a second time and the GFX50S will likely make that list if Fujifilm continues to disappoint GFX fans. I will keep my GFX100 until full frame or APS-C catch up and then I will likely downgrade my body to a used GFX50S since medium format sensors advance at a glacial pace and the GFX50S will provide me with most of the aspects that the GFX100 does in a format that I truly enjoy instead of one I have to fight with, but then I might be done with medium format, which will send me back to full frame cameras for my most demanding projects.
