Fujifilm X-H2S Auto Focus Testing

Taylor Jackson has been posting a lot about the improved autofocus in the Fujifilm X-H2S and while I do not fully agree with how enthusiastic he is about the improvements they are certainly there to be seen in his footage. Judging autofocus above good enough is kind of hard to do because the times you’re going to be annoyed with the autofocus of your camera are largely going to be the times where it failed.

I watched all of his footage pretty closely and there were a few times that the camera misfocused, but not for long enough to lose acceptable focus on the subject. The Fujifilm X-H2S is a decent improvement over the X-T3/X-T4 autofocus system, but it does not appear to be Sony good yet. Maybe Fujifilm will be able to match Sony with some firmware updates, but we might have to wait for the Fujifilm X-T5 to see that level of AF.

If I need super fast snappy AF I am still going to grab a Sony camera for the time being because Sony outperforms my AF expectations in almost every way and it has for a while. I would concede that it does look like Fujifilm caught up to Nikon and Canon AF though because in my experience they do not match Sony.

While I personally do not mind the high price point of the Fujifilm X-H2S I believe it will be hard to justify over an X-T3/X-T4 unless you need some of the video features that the X-H2S adds. There is simply no reason to “upgrade” from competent enjoyable cameras to a less enjoyable camera that might track slightly better and comes with a lot of useful video features. It will be interesting to see if the X-H2S helps grow Fujifilm’s base or if it will be a flop like the X-H1.
