Fujifilm X-T4 vs Sony a7RIV: Is Full Frame a Trap‽

Georges cameras and Warwick Williams from Fujifilm Australia compare the Fujifilm X-T4 vs Sony a7RIV with similar lenses from Sony and Fujifilm. Below is a summary of the above video:

  • 61MP Full-Frame vs 26MP APSC
  • Comparing the Sony 85mm f/1.4 vs Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2 and Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 vs Fujifilm 16-55mm f/2.8
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has a flip screen and Sony a7RIV does not
  • Comparing via JPEG
  • Sony has some more clarity and punchy colors, but they used Provia in this comparison and could have switched profiles
  • The extra MP gives the Sony more clarity and they are pixel peeping
  • The depth of field is comparable at 85mm equivalent, but the Sony has slightly larger oval-shaped Bokeh
  • Warwick Williams feels that if they used the APD 56mm f/1.2 it would be more comparable
  • When stopping the 85mm equivalent down to f/2 they look very similar
  • Sony seems a little brighter in the shadows in their outdoor comparison and of course clarity from the 61MP sensor at f/5.6
  • The final comparison at f/8 they both look very similar
  • There is a difference between Full Frame and APS-C but it is a smaller difference than you would thing
  • About half the photos you would have a hard time guessing which camera shot the image
  • APS-C can hold its own and it is slighly smaller/ligher/cheaper
  • You arent saving much size/weight with the a7RIV plus no flip screen
  • Fujifilm sticks to APS-C to keep the camera small and X-Trans helps it to compete
  • Fujifilm’s film simulations will really help you to get what you’re looking for
  • Both cameras handle very well and can get the shot
  • If you want shallower depth of field you can always go with the GFX
