Sony Doesn’t Have a Camera to Compete With The Fujifilm X-T2

amphophoto

Kimio Maki the Senior General Manager of the Digital Imaging Business Group at Sony made an interesting statement during his interview with Amateur Photographer.

“Are fast-focusing mirrorless cameras like the Fujifilm X-T2 a threat to Sony Alpha 7-series customers?
KM: Yes. In terms of speed we have learned a lot from Fujifilm, Canon and other competitors. There’s still a lot more to learn of course and we don’t have the same kind of weapon right now. We have to create something new.”

It’s a rare admission of defeat by Sony and lends weight to the claims that the Fujifilm X-T2 has the best autofocus performance in it’s class. I am not trying to slam Sony here and I look forward to the competition between the two companies because we will benefit the most.

Printable Fujifilm GFX Mount and Sensor: Updated!!! Meet The GFX 50S!

gfxunivprint_gfx_front

UPDATED: I worked with my measurements and now you can print your own Fujifilm GFX 50S at home in landscape. If you were able to get the previous image to print properly then you can get this image file to print. It looks like the dimensions of the Fujifilm GFX 50S will be roughly(144.75 x 93 x 75 mm) w/o vf (144.75 x 113 .71x 75 mm) w viewfinder compared to the Hasselblad X1D-50c (150 x 98 x 71 mm). It seems the Hasselblad doesn’t have much of a size advantage.

UPDATE 2: If you include the camera strap lugs the measurements become (152.4 x 93 x 75 mm) w/o vf (152.4 x 113.71 x 75 mm) w viewfinder. I am adding this update because I did some slight revisions to the Hasselblad X1D-50 comparison below to increase accuracy and realized that Hasselblad includes the camera strap mount points in their camera measurements. If I remove them from the measurement of the Hasselblad it becomes (140.8 x 98 x 71 mm)

Accurate Size Comparison between Fujifilm GFX 50S and Hasselblad X1D-50c

improveoverlugwg10

Previously I was unsure if I could make a printable sensor/mount to share with you, but I was able to create a compatible enough file to share. I tested the image above on 3 printers, 4 computers and 8 applications to see if the print lined up with my templates and they did universally. The only issue I had was a printers needing me to press ok to bypass a printing error, but the sensors/mount printed correctly. Since I measured this at 4 points it should be accurate.

Please let me know below if your print has problems and what kind of printer you are using so I can try to tweak my file in the future. The sizes are iPhone 7 (6.25×6.16mm), Four Thirds (18×13.5mm), Nikon APS-C (23.5×15.7), Full Frame (36x34mm), Fujifilm GFX 50S (43.8×32.9mm), and Phase One XF (53.7×40.4mm). You must print directly from the file (not from your web browser) for this to work and your print must properly interpret 300 dpi. I have included my photo’s of my printouts below with cut outs as a proof of concept. The yellow is Phase One XF, green Fujifilm GFX 50S, blue full frame, orange APS-C and all of them line up perfectly.

Savings Extension Photokina Edition

photoksalecont
It appears that Fujifilm decided to extend their discounts past Photokina while no one was looking, but only on the lenses. So if you have anything left to pick up now is the time. Also if you buy a XF or XC lens with a X-Pro 2 you get a Domke F-5XB bag and some Fujifilm X-Pro 2s have been in stock if you’re interested. I also have it on good authority that B&H Photo should be listing some used Fujifilm X-T2’s soon.

The Guys at DigitalRev Hands-On With The Fujifilm GFX 50S

DigitalRev go hands-on and they come away impressed. According to them the camera isn’t front heavy and the grip is very nice. They actually place the weight below the Nikon D5 and D800. If you like the feel of a Fujifilm camera than you will love the Fujifilm GFX 50S. They also proclaim that Full Frame video is over thanks to the ultra narrow depth of field when recording video so this is an indication that they aren’t cropping the sensor when recording video.

Fujifilm GFX 50S Interview With Mr. Toshihisa Iida by DPReview

In the Interview with DPReview Mr. Toshihisa Iida states that the difference between full frame and APS-C is too narrow and Fujifilm wanted a major difference in image quality. APS-C can handle the majority of photography needs but for those that want the ultimate image quality medium format is the way to go. Image quality is number one followed by the size and weight of the camera. The biggest challenge when designing this camera was capturing the light as strait as possible. X-Trans wasn’t necessary for this size format and reduces the complexity of the processing without reducing image quality. Of course other lenses can be use on the camera, but they don’t have plans to make adapters until the future. The camera will do “Full HD even not 4k” weird way of saying what it can do… but the depth of field will be very interesting for movies. The Fujifilm GFX 50s is for any photographer that needs high-resolution, wider dynamic range, better low light performance (should be the same). Great for fashion, photographers, portrait or commercial photographers and will be available early next year.
