Photons to Photos Preliminary Dynamic Range Results Are In Fujifilm GFX vs Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 vs Canon 5D Mark IV

Photons to Photos Preliminary dynamic range results have been released and they are certainly disappointing for Sony fans if you’re not familiar with the site, which always skews conservatively. You can expect the Sony a7RIII to perform slightly better when final results are available, but it’s unlikely it will surpass the GFX, which makes me wonder where Sony gets their 15 stops of dynamic range measurement from. It’s very interesting that Sony’s claimed dynamic range improvements are not showing up in initial testing. You can manipulate the results here.

This after we have had a very engaging discussion about photography techniques based on the flawed sharpness comparison test the other day. The Fujifilm GFX Owners group became filled with examples of eye crops better than image resources ranging from X-Series to GFX cameras. While I can appreciate the conditions under which Image Resource probably had to take these photos their technique was flawed and demonstrates why it’s important for bloggers to actually own and use the cameras they review. Not every camera does the work for you like the Sony a7RIII. The Fujifilm GFX 50S is a camera that takes fines to obtain maximum resolution.

First Fujifilm GFX vs Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 vs Canon 5D Mark IV Comparison

The comparison between the Fujifilm GFX vs Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 vs Canon 5D Mark IV was inevitable and while the results are very interesting they could have been a little more clinical. imaging-resource put this comparison together and they tried to match the four systems as closely as they could but used some slightly different settings that might have advantaged some systems and disadvantaged others. I compiled a list of the equipment used.

  • Fujifilm GFX – GF 63mm f/2.8 R WR
  • Sony a7RIII – FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS (Impressive results from the new lens)
  • Nikon D850 – Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 E VR
  • Canon 5D Mark IV – Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II

You can view the full photos for each camera from the following links and the settings for each

While these photos were taken on a tripod shooting the GFX at 1/20th and depending on AF compared to the a7RIII does put it at a disadvantage. Sony’s eye AF is world class and I am unsure how skilled the photographers were with the GFX because I know the 63mm can get better results than this. I also wish this test was performed without contacts because the pattern being captured is less impressive than iris detail. Sony also enjoys an advantage here because their auto white balance has been tweaked quite a bit since the Sony a9 and original a7RII came out. I can’t wait to see how the a7RIII compares to the GFX for dynamic range and I am sure photons on photos will be first to release the results. I will actually have access to all of these cameras except the Canon when the a7RIII launches because we use the cameras we write about.

Instax Square Marketing Videos released For instax SHARE Printer SP-3 and instax SQ10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqgq2wwwB0I

Fujifilm released some new Instax Square marketing material the other day that includes a 60-second and 30-second advertisement showing off the instax SHARE Printer SP-3 and instax SQ10, in addition to a product movie for the SP-3. It will be interesting to see where these videos show up. I am looking forward to receiving my printer, but I really can’t wait for Fujifilm to release a more serious instax Square camera. My ideal instax Square camera would be one that merges the SQ10 and current instax mini/wide design into one camera. Hopefully, Fujifilm makes it happen soon.

Lightroom Classic CC 7.0.1, Lightroom 6.13, and ACR 10 Released With Fujifilm X-E3 Support Plus Adobe Apology and Reinstall Lightroom 6

Lightroom
Adobe is jumping to add camera support and clean up the public relations nightmare that is Lightroom CC, but at least they added the Fujifilm X-E3 to Lightroom 6 and 7 even after saying the D850 would be the last camera they added to Lightroom 6.

New Camera Support

  • Fujifilm X-E3

Adobe screwed up pretty badly early in the week by auto-updating photographer to Lightroom CC Classic and they are trying to walk it back a little with their latest update, but it’s still not addressing the more serious issues. Hopefully camera profile updates continue while things are sorted out.

We understand we sent perpetual customers down a path of subscribing to a trial version of the new Lightroom Classic CC last week, replacing already installed versions of Lightroom 6.

The good news is we fixed this issue and wanted to get a quick release out to immediately address your concerns.  Now once you click on the “Update” button next to Lightroom Classic CC, you will see under the Advanced Options, the “Remove old versions” is unchecked by default.  As a result, you can try out Lightroom Classic CC for the trial period and still keep Lightroom 6 running in tandem on your desktop.

We sincerely apologize for not providing a better user experience for our perpetual customers to try out Lightroom Classic CC while still keeping Lightroom 6 in place.  This was a mistake on our end.  Please let us know if you are experiencing any additional issues with this process moving forward.

If you already deleted Lightroom 6 there is a solution

How can I download Lightroom 6 if it’s already been removed in the process of downloading Lightroom CC Classic before this release?

Please follow the steps referenced under “Reinstall Lightroom 6.

What happens if I attempt to update all apps that I am subscribed to?

Please click here to see which preferences are stored by default when updating apps.

Macphun The Creator of Luminar and Aurora HDR is Now Skylum Software

Macphun is Becoming Skylum Software, which is a more platform agnostic name that better represents the current position of their software. Luminar and Aurora HDR are both great applications for photographers that have become cross-platform and Luminar is one one of the very popular options for people looking to get away from Lightroom after the Lightroom CC Classic announcement.

Their DAM product, which will be a free update to Luminar in 2018 looks and it looks like a serious replacement for Lightroom and I can’t wait until it’s released. You can also get a discount if you use promo code FUJIADDICT at checkout on their website. Until then there is a teaser and their statement.

After recent Adobe news about Lightroom updates, we received a lot of questions about our plans for creating a photo manager, so we’d like to shed some light on this.

At the moment we’re working on the digital asset manager (“DAM”) which will work with both hard drives and cloud storage platforms. It’s going to be a perfect tool for organizing and managing images. Moreover, users will be able to run it along with LR library to compare both DAMs side by side and choose which fits them better.

The new DAM will be added to Luminar in 2018, and will be a free update to everyone who owns Luminar 2018. We’ll be releasing more details soon.

In the meanwhile here’s a short video about the new DAM from Macphun

instax Share SP-3 Coverage With The Fuji Guys

The Instax Share SP-3 looks like a big improvement over the SP-2, which was limited by its small format. The use of Instax Square format film in the SP-3 makes it a very attractive alternative to the SQ10, which was basically a digital point and shoot camera and printer in one.  The separation of the printer from the camera lets you bring a variety of cameras to the format, which is exciting. I will definitely be picking one of these up on November 17th.

thephoblographer – Review: Fujifilm Instax SP-3 Instax Square Printer

pcmag – Review

tomsguide – Review

Nothing really new from reviews, but the SP-3 is an improvement over the SP-2 in mainly because of software updates and the larger format. I barely use my Instax mini printer, but I hand out Instax Square photos like candy at various events so I am sure the printer will be even more popular than the Instax SQ10.
