Fujifilm GFX 50S ePhotozine Overall Camera of 2017 and Fujifilm X-T20 is DSLR-Style Mirrorless Camera of 2017

This years picks for camera of the year across a variety of blogs/vlogs has largely been political with many wanting to congratulate Nikon for DSLR’s last hurrah, but ePhotozine had the courage to pick the Fujifilm GFX 50S as their camera of the year for 2017. Honestly, I would have a hard time picking between the Fujifilm GFX 50S and Sony a7RIII, which I have been using a lot lately, but the D850 wouldn’t be in the running for me even though it is the best DSLR yet.

The Sony a7RII and Fujifilm GFX 50S are fantastic and are the beginning of things to come in 2018, because the level the a7RIII is able to perform at without having a stacked sensor like the Sony a9 means that there is still a lot of room for Fujifilm to improve the X-H1 and X-T3. If Sony doesn’t share their stacked sensor technology with Fujifilm in 2018 then the Fujifilm X-T3 and X-H1 could still perform at Sony a9 levels, because the Sony a7RIII performs closely enough to the a9 to negate the need for the a9 for most.

The Fujifilm X-T20 also won best DSLR-Style Mirrorless Camera. The Fujifilm X-T20 has actually been on a few short lists for camera of the year since it performs almost as well as the Fujifilm X-T2 for a few hundred fewer dollars and in a smaller package. Fujifilm Makes Lensrentals Most Popular Gear Rented in 2017 List

Earlier this year Lens Rentals reported a dramatic increase in Fujifilm rentals, but as the end of the year rolled around none of the great Fujinon lenses made Lens Rentals top 20 lists. Instead, the Fujifilm X100F came in 5th place for most popular photo & video gear of 2017 and the Fujifilm GFX 50S came in 19th, which isn’t bad at all. Canon and Sony largely dominated the overall top 20 list this year, with Nikon almost nowhere to be found. You can find the complete article here if you are curious about all the winners and losers.

Fujifilm X-Pro2 Firmware 4.00 Bug Acknowledged by Fujifilm

Very few users meet the conditions below exactly, but those that do have experienced lockups that require the battery to be removed to reset the camera. Firmware 4.00 is a big step forward, so it might take Fujifilm a little while to fully figure out this bug, but if you change a few settings the bug shouldn’t occur at all.

Notice for customers
We have confirmed that X-Pro2 with the upgraded firmware (ver.4.00) released on Dec 22 2017 stops working in certain settings.
We deeply apologize for your inconvenience this may cause. The symptom will happen only when all three conditions below are set at the same time.

1) IMAGE QUALITY : FINE+RAW or NORMAL + RAW
2) RAW RECORDING : LOSSLESS COMPRESSED
3) DRIVE : any of ADVANCED FILTER
* This is not factory setting. If the symptom happens, please remove the battery once for recovery. We are preparing a revised firmware as a solution and plan to release it as soon as possible.

A Tale of 2 Cameras and 2 Photographers: Fujifilm X-Pro2 and X-T2 Compared

Fujifilm released an interesting video comparing the different advantages of the Fujifilm X-T2 and X-Pro2, which is, of course, the main selling point of Fujifilm cameras. You get the same great image quality regardless of camera, but the user experience changes from model to model.

Features Highlighted For The Fujifilm X-T2

  • Exposure Compensation Dial – Well positioned, there is no accidental rotation.
  • Dedicated ISO Dial and Dedicated Shutter Dial – This is very useful, as I change ISO all the time to keep up with the crazy club lights.
  • Articulated Flip Screen – I use the flip screen all the time. It’s good with long arms. Works vertically too.
  • Electronic Viewfinder – No optical viewfinder, but the electronic viewfinder is much bigger and brighter than the X-Pro2’s. At 0.77x magnifications, it’s night vision for old eyes in the dark.
  • Flemming Bo Jensen – Epic. That’s my working environment. Insain light, mad crowds, wild artists… for a crazy photographer. And the X-T2 keeps up with it all. It’s the perfect camera for me.

Features Highlighted For The Fujifilm X-Pro2

  • Exposure Compensation Dial – Adjusting exposure with one thumb is super easy, but it rotates on its own a lot.
  • Shutter & ISO Dial – Integrated shutter and ISO dials make changing the settings with one hand very easy. Respond quickly to changing light.
  • Hybrid View Finder, but no Flip Screen – I can anticipate action outside the frame, with the enhanced optical viewfinder. Or a flick of the lever, and use the electronic viewfinder to see the exact end results I want. I have the best of both worlds in one viewfinder.
  • Charlene Winfred – X-Pro2 makes you just another tourist. It’s perfect for the streets. It is a discreet, elegant camera. Intuitive to use, beautiful to look at. It’s more than ideal; the X-Pro2 is luxury.
