Cambo Actus-GFX Works With GFX100

Cambo made multiple statements about their Cambo Actus-GFX on Facebook the other day and how it works with GFX100. They machined a part for the GFX100 body that allows it to rotate between portrait and landscape since the camera is shaped a little differently than the GFX50S. You can use the Cambo Actus-GFX without the part, but only in portrait orientation.

During the last couple of weeks we received a lot of emails regarding the Fuji GFX-100. Will it fit on the Actus-GFX? The answer is yes.

The new GFX is substantially higher than the current 50mp models. We’ve just machined the parts required to fit the 100mp body to the Actus. And as demo cameras are still sparse in Europe, we took the opportunity to try the combination during the grand opening of Calumet’s new store in Frankfurt. Thank you Fujifilm Europe and Calumet Germany.

In that case you may prefer to use the current GFX mount instead. Thus you’ll be limited to use in portrait orientation. But the 100-mount will inevitably use this longer flange.

In portrait orientation you could actually use the Actus-GFX as it is. Only when used in landscape orientation the new GFX-100 requires more space.

Fujifilm GX100 Factory Tour and Eye AF: 12 Days Until Shipment

Above, The Straits Times was one of the many journalists to get a look inside Fujifilm’s factory. While they aren’t really a camera channel they do have some unique footage in their video in addition to stock footage if you’re into the small details. There isn’t a lot of footage, but you get a pretty decent look at the 110 piece GFX100 IBIS assembly and some new angles of the 900 piece body assembly, which is all done by hand. They also mention that the GFX100 has weather sealing at 95 points.

A lot of journalists and youtube influencers got tours of Fujifilm’s factory, but many of the videos that have been posted online from these tours have been extremely short or not informative at all. So far Cinima5D has the best look at the creation of the GFX100 out. Hopefully, we will see some more soon as the launch approaches.

Below an interesting GFX100 Eye AF video showing off Fujifilm’s Gen4.0 and Gen4.1 Eye/Face AF system. You can definitely see an improvement in Fujifilm’s tracking algorithm below and many have been impressed by the Fujifilm GFX100’s tracking ability. I am hopefully that Fujifilm will be the first camera company to really catch Sony with their Eye AF/Face Detection technology but Sony just keeps leaping ahead with Fujifilm closely following throughout their lineup.

Fujifilm Value Angle Explored and Misinformation Being Spread Again

Profifoto and Docma have taken Fujifilm’s value angle to heart from the Fujifilm X Summit by trying to uncover Fujifilm’s originally calculation with the following formula:

Value Angle = 2 × arctan ((2 × Pad Ratio) / (Port Diameter – Sensor Diagonal))

The problem is their calculations do not match with Fujifilm’s results any way beyond the flange back number.

If we look carefully at Fujifilm’s slide X-Mount has a flange back of 17.70 on both sides, but Fujifilm claims a value angle of 41.15 while Profifoto claims 48.08 and Docma rounds with a similar claim of 48.1, which is way off from Fujifilm’s slide. We can go on to look at the rest which are:

Fujifilm Calc VA 41.15 flange back 17.70
Other Calc VA 48.08 flange back 17.70

Mount A VA 24.62 flange back 20.00
Leica TL VA 54.47 flange back of 20.00

Mount B VA 33.83 flange back of 16.00
Nikon VA 40.26 flange back of 16.00

Mount C1 VA 5.50 flange back of 18.00
Sony FE VA 8.99 flange back of 18.00

Mount C2 VA 50.01 flange back of 18.00
Sony NEX VA 52.89 flange back of 18.00

It looks like Profifoto and Docma calculated their number incorrectly, but at least we now have a list of the mounts that Fujifilm was comparing themselves too, but there might be some kind of correlation between the two results. The take away is that Fujifilm always calculated themselves higher than the competition while Profifoto and Docma slanted their calculations towards the competition.

To summarize I do not believe any of these numbers should matter to photographers, but it might make engineers lives easier when trying to design extreme lenses with maximum image quality. It could also make optics more affordable if their designs are simpler. Digital camera have been more than good enough for years now and they still continue getting better by adding features today that we couldn’t have dreamed of in the past. At least we now know the exact cameras Fujifilm used in their Value Angle comparison.

DPRTV: Fujinon XF200mm The Great White Sharp Shot on GFX100

DPRTV created a short film about the Fujinon XF 200mm F2 R LM OIS WR while attending Fujikina in Japan using a pre-production Fujifilm GFX100. This is our first look at a video created with the GFX100 for those considering creating similar work. Below are excerpts from the quick look:

  • This is a heavy lens at almost 5lbs which is similar to a 300mm f/2.8
  • Custom focusing buttons and nice controls
  • Good IBIS they can do about 1/15th
  • Arca Swiss plate cut out of the foot
  • High price point at just under $6,000
  • Awesome optical performance
  • Hard to say anything negative about optical performance
  • Even with the supplied 1.4x teleconverter, it is very sharp
  • Nice bokeh fall off
  • Can be a beautiful portrait lens
  • Very well corrected lens
  • Great for action and wildlife
  • At home on Fujifilm X-T3
  • Very fast focusing
  • Min focus distance just under 2m
  • Manual focusing for stills isn’t great because it is a very long turn
  • Great lens for video and stability, but the focus ring is unusable for video
  • Reminds them of the quality of the XF8-16mm
  • Very comparable to Canon and Nikon 300mm f/2.8, which are great lenses

DPR: Fujifilm X100F vs Ricoh GR III

I am a long time fan of the Fujifilm X100 and Ricoh GR, with the X100 being one of the few cameras I have ever purchased multiple times. Both cameras are great and they are good for very different situations in my opinion, but DPR decided to compare them. Below is how DPR thinks they stack up:

  • 28mm Ricoh vs 35mm Fuji Tie
  • Fuji can use adapters for 28mm and 50mm, while Ricoh has just 21mm so Fuji Wins
  • Lens speed Ricoh is 2.8 Fuji 2.0 and there are many other variables so Tied again
  • Only Ricoh has stabilization Ricoh Wins
  • Ricoh bayer sensor vs Fujifilm X-Trans Ricoh Wins
  • Ricoh is actually pocketable so Ricoh Wins Size
  • GR has no VF so Fujifilm Wins Viewfinder
  • GR has no flash so Fujifilm Wins Flash
  • Fujifilm is more dial driven and Ricoh more touch screen Ricoh Has Best Touch Screen
  • Fuji X100’s are often mistaken as Leica cameras but the GR has effective controls DPR picks Ricoh Controls
  • The battery is easy Fujifilm has twice the performance as the Ricoh so Fujifilm wins battery
  • Neither are great for video, but Fujifilm wins video

As I said before I love both cameras and we should get an updated Fujifilm X100 soon, but I’m not sure I could pick just one. The GR really is a true pocket camera and it uses DNG which is more important than it being bayer.

In my experience, DNG RAW files are pretty much an automatic win for me over the whole bayer vs X-Trans debate that many dive into. I greatly prefer the image quality X-Trans can produce over Bayer, but DNG RAW files make life easier and I wish Fujifilm would implement DNG so that X-Trans becomes a non-issue.
