Photography Has A New Home In London

Photography has a new home in London: Fujifilm announce development of experiential concept centre in Covent Garden
Photography experience centre will open to the public in Winter 2019

Fujifilm has today announced that they will open a new concept experience centre in the heart of Covent Garden, London. Spread over three floors, this new centre – a world’s first for the company – will celebrate and showcase all aspects of Fujifilm’s innovative photography and imaging brands, from picture taking to picture making.

Founded in 1934, photography is at the heart of Fujifilm’s heritage. The brand is renowned globally for its innovative X-Series, GFX and its iconic range of instax cameras and printers, as well as its award winning ‘Wonder Photo Shop’ stores and photo printing services.

Opening in Winter 2019, the new centre will be a permanent addition to Covent Garden, with the aim to inspire and encourage visitors to get creative and immerse themselves in the world of photography and experience all Fujifilm has to offer by integrating “touch and try” experiences with cameras, lenses and printers, to exploring the best ways to print photos on a wide range of materials using Fujifilm’s market leading software.

Zones in the new centre will feature the following experiences, with more to be confirmed in coming months:

  • Instax instant cameras and printers experience zone
  • GFX specialist area
  • X-Series spotlight
  • Wonder Photo Shop with photo printing and photo gifting inspiration

Fujifilm is passionate about the preservation of people’s memories and are committed to more than just keeping the spirit and culture of photography alive – we want it to thrive. This new experience centre, a Fujifilm first, will help us do just that, and I am proud that Fujifilm and photography will have a new home in London’s premier shopping, entertainment and cultural destination.

Yoshitaka Nakamura, Managing Director, FUJIFILM UK

From rewriting the rulebook on larger format cameras with the GFX100, to launching the smallest and most innovative instax instant camera to date– an incredibly exciting year for Fujifilm has just got even bigger. We have proven over decades that we are at the forefront of photographic technology, constantly evolving and innovating. Alongside this, our developments in paper and ink technology mean that we are unique in our abilities to bring images to life. Our new centre will put the customer at the heart of the experience as a place for everyone to completely immerse themselves in the world of photography, from picture taking to picture making.

Theo Georghiades, Project Leader, FUJIFILM Photography Experience Centre London, and General Manager of Electronic Imaging, FUJIFILM UK

Ronin-SC Launches With Very Limited X-H1, X-T2, and X-T3 Support

Ronin-SC: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

DJI released the new Ronin-SC Gimbal with limited Fujifilm support. Sony and other cameras allow for, Capture photo Start/stop recording video Zoom control(digital or optical) Trigger autofocus, Start/stop recording video Pull focus electronically Trigger autofocus, while Fujifilm is limited to Capture Photo and Trigger autofocus. It’s good to see DJI starting to add native support for Fujifilm cameras and their controls, but this solution is far from ideal for videographers. You can see a full list of supported cameras and lenses here and there are some videos of the lenses mounted on the cameras in the document that you can view.

Fujifilm Patent Hints At New Smart Dials

A Fujifilm Patent has recently surfaced hinting at smart dials that are very GFX100 like in design. This innovation could be useful to shrink the size of Fujifilm cameras, but I think many fans will not be satisfied by this design since the analog dials are a big draw for photographers looking for a more photographer-centric experience.

We will have to wait and see how this could be used in the future, but I think cameras like the X80 and X100V would benefit the most from this design, followed by the Fujifilm X-E4 and X-T40.

For The Fujifilm Film Fans

The popularity of analog film is often debated, but there is still enough demand to drive fraudulent production and even to save ACROS from being discontinued. That being said not many have taken the time to write about analog Fujifilm in recent years, but Lambdaandy posted an interesting analysis of many old forms of Fujifilm on weibo, which you can read here. Lambdaandy compiled all of his Fujifilm rolls and posted a brief analysis of each with some sample photos to demonstrate the film’s character.

It’s a very long post and the best way to read it is with Chrome’s translate feature if it doesn’t bug out and refuse to translate. I am going to post the translated text below, but be sure to check out the actual post/Updated post for the individual film samples if you are an analog film fan. Read More »
