PDR: Fujifilm X-T3 vs Sony a6600 vs a6500 vs a6400

Photons to Photos just added the Sony a6600 to their PDR comparison tool and the results are interesting. Sony has taken the base PDR lead, but then largely falls behind Fujifilm throughout the ISO range except for between roughly 400-800 ISO. It’s interesting that Sony didn’t surpass the over year old X-T3 across the board in PDR results and that the X-T3 continues to have the best low light performance.

SteelsRing GFX Nikon AF Adapter Update and Fujifilm AF Improvements to Come

AF adapters are less than perfect so it is no surprise that the initial availability of the SteelsRing GFX Nikon AF on Amazon has had a mixed reception due to limited lens compatibility, but that should get better soon with firmware updates. There is an interesting statement on the website now though.

BTW: A high AF performace FW update will be available in Q1,2020 for FUJIFILM cameras , especailly for GFX 100s and latest FX cameras.

It’s hard to tell if SteelsRing is strictly talking about in relation to their products with the above statement, but performance improvements are always welcome.

FEATURES:
1) Contrast based AF support to F-mount compatible type G, E and AF-P lenses
2) Auto aperture control for type E lens
3) Manual aperture lever for type G lens, real-time aperture control , nonadjustable from camera body, only the current max aperture is displayed in camera.
4) Full EXIF recording for supported lenses
5) Type D lens is not supported, AF is impossible with this adapter,EXIF is recorded.
6) Lens VR/OIS support
7) Support 35mm format mode of GFX
8) F-mount lenses AF performs better than EF lenses on GFX due to different AF driving mode.

Best Lenses of 2019 by The Art of Photography

Ted Forbs seems to really enjoy Fujinon wide lenses because he often brings up the excellent Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4. So it should come as no surprise that its little brother the XF16mm f/2.8 made his best of 2019 lens list, but more lenses might have been included if Fujifilm did more outreach.

I’m surprised no GFX glass made Ted’s list, but he probably didn’t have many opportunities to use a GFX100 in 2019 with glass released this year. Ted based his picks on Optics, Feature, Price, and Size. All of which Fujifilm excels at, but few are aware of due to limited outreach.

I hope Fujifilm steps up their outreach in 2020 because a lot of there glass belongs on these kinds of lists. Especially with cameras like the X-T3 continuing to drive a large amount of interest.

Best Ultrawide
Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art – very sharp, but no filter threading
Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S – extremely sharp and hs filter threads

Best Wide
Fujinon XF16mm f/2.8 R WR – Very compact and you will get 90% of what you will get from the 16mm f/1.4 which is one of his favorites
Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM – Very practical and well priced for amazing optics

Best Normal
Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 – expensive but incredible reference lens

Best Short Telephoto
Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM – Incredible lens that lens rentals calls the sharpest lens they have ever tested

Best Long Telephoto
Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS – No lens compares including the Sony 400mm f/2.8

Best Lens of 2019
Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 – complete sleeper with great bokeh

Fujifilm GA645 The Ultimate Medium Format Point & Shoot Camera

Medium format really took off for Fujifilm in 2019 with the GFX100 and GFX50R, but many are waiting for a X100 style GFX camera at a reasonable price point (Maybe 3-4k). In the meantime, the Fujifilm GA645 has seen a resurgence with prices doubling year over year as film continues its comeback with some photographers. I could even be interesting to rotate the GFX 44x33mm sensor on its side to make it like a GA645 in its standard orientation being portrait.

I personally have never used a Fujifilm GA645, but I have heard a lot of good things from photographers I know and people online. There has even been an uptick in recent Fujifilm 654 videos on youtube as more photographers discover the classic camera. I personally will never go back to the trouble of film again, but I do think there is a place for these classic camera designs in our modern digital camera world. If you’re interested in picking a Fujifilm GA645 Amazon has one from a third party seller.
