DPRTV: Best Camera Backpacks of 2020

I know first hand how difficult camera backpack shopping can be so I decided to share DPRTV’s 2020 Best Camera Backpacks. It’s a pretty comprehensive list but they mixed small and large bags in the review and I think they should have split them up. I personally decided to go with the 31L Wandrd PRVKE when I needed a travel backpack but there are more great bags out there today and I might have picked the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L if I were buying today. Below is a list of the bags covered and their comments about them from above:

  • All of these bags are good for airline travel and more
  • Wandrd PRVKE 31 Photo Bundle at 1.5KG 3.6Lbs
    • Has a handy roll-top
    • Smallest of all the bags they used today with a hidden pouch
    • Uses a modular system that can be customized
    • This is definitely made for a mirrorless shooter
    • Great tripod holder and lots of secret pouches
    • The roll-top gives you the flexibility to fix extra clothes and food
    • One of the most comfortable bags to carry
    • Loaded out it is 32.5Lbs, but the straps are very well designed
    • There are a waist belt and rain cover that come with the photographer’s bundle
    • With the waist belt on you can flip it around to get access to things in the bag
    • You can also do one strap off and swing the bag around to get access to things insides
    • Might not want to grab it by the straps because it looks like a lot of weight goes on the back zippers when you do, but it is fine to grab the bag by the carry handle
    • Did a rain test and it looks like it should be the most weatherproof and everything inside was dry when testing
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and bone dry inside with a little bit of water on the bottom seem
    • Can do a lot with a small size
  • Shimoda Explore 40 w/ Starter Kit at 1.3KG 2.9Lbs
    • Nice leather zipper tassels
    • Generous side straps
    • Weatherproof expandable pouch with a drawstring
    • Front pouch has drain holes but is also good for putting your laptop
    • Lots of places to put a laptop
    • Modular camera bag
    • Very comfortable bag
    • Fully loaded 32.6Lbs
    • Can be adjusted for your frame height
    • Has a whistle on it
    • Generous waist belt, but you cant tuck it away
    • Distributes weight well
    • Good airflow and breathability
    • Little zipper pouches and D rings to clip ontop
    • Did a rain test and it the water beaded off and a few drops snuck inside
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and wet bottom like many other bags, but nice and dry in the camera cube
    • This is the bag that Jordan would pick because it carries like a hiking bag without looking like one
  • CosySpeed PhotoHiker 44 with cubes at 1.6KG 3.8Lbs
    • Looks like the most serious hiking bag
    • Looks like a full-on technical backpack
    • Tons of space
    • It’s a front access bag
    • Tall cameras are not a problem
    • This bag held the most and it took everything except for the drone
    • Incredible carrying capacity
    • Hiking designed
    • Most comfortable and effective bag
    • Everything is form-fitted well
    • Very breathable
    • Just under 36Lbs fully loaded
    • Laptop storage is limited and doesn’t fit fat laptops well
    • Have to put the bag on the ground to access things
    • Waist belt doesn’t tuck away
    • Affordable
    • Did a rain test and the material got soaked but inside is dry
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and water in the bottom of the bag, but the module has no issue
    • Very surprised at this bag because you can fit so much in it and its useful for a lot of different phogoraphers
  • Manfrotto Manhattan Mover 50 at 1.5KG 3.6Lbs
    • Most urban looking but not a lot of weather sealing
    • Tripod holder on the back but it blocks the laptop case
    • A pouch on the side
    • Back access on the bag
    • Lots of pouches
    • Can be used as a classic backpack
    • Great for urban shoots
    • Thin origami dividers
    • Very light bag that is 28Lbs when fully loaded
    • The straps arent very comfortable
    • The back access pouch you will feel in your back
    • Doesn’t quite fit right for them
    • Not great material used
    • Very easy to get into the bag
    • Affordable and convenient bag
    • Did a rain test and it and the bag got soaked like a wet dog and water was inside the bag
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and it is soaked so only put gear you want to lose in the bottom
    • This is the only bag you have to rush to get the rain cover on
    • Very low price point that might be a great urban bag
  • Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L with 2 cubes at 2KG 4.5Lbs
    • The stealth fighter jet of backpacks with a technological look
    • Holds an impressive amount of stuff with tons of space and they didn’t even have to expand it to fit their stuff
    • Two expansion zippers to get you another 10L
    • Excellent laptop pouch
    • Origami dividers
    • Fully loaded was 36Lbs and the straps are very nice and distribute the weight well
    • Very customizable
    • Waist belt is very thin so you cant flip the bag around and get access to things
    • You have to put it down to open it up
    • Not a lot of breathability
    • Distributes weight very very well
    • Did a rain test and nothing wet inside the bag during testing
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and some water soaked through the material, but the camera cubes give you a second level of protection
    • Does what Manfroto is trying to but much higher quality
  • Atlas Athlete Large Frame at 1.8KG 4Lbs $395
    • An interesting hybrid backpack that’s good for on the go
    • Very much a hybrid bag
    • Tons of space inside thanks to the drawstring seal
    • Has an H2O blatter pouch
    • Back access camera compartment
    • Not a modular bag
    • Can get quite a bit of gear in this bag, but the slot for the body isn’t very large so probably best to stick with mirrorless
    • Light backpack at 4Lbs
    • 32.5Lbs fully loaded
    • Generous waist belt
    • Very comfortable
    • Very easy to carry
    • Good breathability
    • Adjustable waist belt
    • Can trade out of the adventure series belts that give more support
    • Lots of storage beyond camera gear
    • Did a rain test and it wet on the outside, but nice and dry inside
    • The second water test was sitting a few minutes in 15cm of water in a kiddy pool and not bad with almost no water making it into the bag
    • Oozes quality and you will love it if it caries enough gear for you

Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies Breaks Ground For Advanced Therapies Innovation Center in Texas

Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies Breaks Ground For Advanced Therapies Innovation Center in Texas
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, August 19, 2020 – FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, a world leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for biologics, viral vaccines and gene therapies, held a virtual ground-breaking ceremony on August 19, 2020 to signal the start of its Advanced Therapies Innovation Center construction project. The $55M USD building is part of previously announced investments by FUJIFILM Corporation.

The 60,000 square foot building will house dedicated process development and innovation laboratories to support advanced therapy projects. The building will be part of a 22-acre land parcel acquired by FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies from Lake Walk in June 2020. The laboratories will have BSL-2 capabilities with state-of-the-art upstream, downstream and analytical development technologies. The building will triple the sites’ advanced therapies process development capabilities. It is expected that this new building will bring approximately 100 jobs to the College Station area.

The event was virtually attended by College Station Mayor Karl Mooney, County Judge Duane Peters, City of Bryan Mayor Andrew Nelson, developer Spencer Clements from William Cole Companies, and Mike Gentry, board chair for the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation.

“We remain committed to provide leading, future proofed end-to-end gene therapy solutions, from pre-clinical to commercial launch. This is aligned with core purpose to be a Partner for Life as we support our customers in the advancement of tomorrow’s medicines,” said Dr. Gerry Farrell, chief operating officer at FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, Texas.

The Advanced Therapies Innovation Center is expected to be operational by fall 2021.

Fuji Guys – Power Banks Explained

Power Banks are very useful for photographers/videographers and Fujifilm has fully embraced their usage allowing most of their latest cameras to recharge while being powered by a battery bank. I personally bought the Anker PowerCore+26800 PD as the largest battery bank recommended for the Fujifilm X-T3, instead of the alternative Anker PowerCore Speed 20000 PD. The Anker PowerCore+26800 PD is great for when you do not have time to charge your camera/s on the go and I highly recommend it. The above video is short and on point, but I will summarize it below:

  • It’s always good to have extra batteries, but sometimes you run out when doing things like camping
  • A battery bank can help you greatly extend your camera’s battery life
  • There are many types of battery packs for charging your phone, which will also charge your camera, but they might be a little slow
  • What you really want is a power delivery battery bank like the Anker PowerCore Speed 20000 PD or Anker PowerCore+26800 PD that can provide beyond 5V of power
  • Some battery banks go up to 20V like the Anker PowerCore+26800 PD
  • Voltage beyond 5V and 1-2a allow you to power your camera while charging
  • You really want a USB-C connection on the PD power bank to take advantage of the higher power delivery standards
  • The wall chargers that come with the PD banks can be useful too because they deliver more power than standard wall charges and they can be used as an AC adapter for your camera too
  • Power Banks that can only deliver 5V won’t power the camera, but they will charge the internal battery

Fujifilm EF-60 and EF-W1 Shipping August 28th

Fujifilm informed retailers that the new Fujifilm EF-60 and EF-W1 will be shipping on August 28th.

Fujifilm EF-60 Key Features
  • X-Series and GFX System Wireless Control
  • Nissin Air System Wireless Compatibility
  • Recycle Time: 3 sec at Full Power
  • Guide Number: 197′ at 200mm Setting
  • Added versatility for those challenging situations – The EF-60 uses a Xenon flash tube as well as a high-luminance, white LED modeling light to achieve focus in dimly lit areas and help with aiming and positioning the light overall. For hybrid image makers, the EF-60’s modeling light can also be used as a continuous light source to create a catch light in a subject’s eyes when recording video.
  • Impressive power with multiple professional features to provide absolute creative control over an image – EF-60 is Fujifilm’s first wireless shoe mount flash that is radio-controlled. It provides X Series and GFX System users with impressively powerful output and professional features in a compact and portable design. With a zoom range of 24mm-200mm and a maximum guide number of 60 at 200mm, this flash is perfect for either TTL or manual applications and can be used on or off camera, when combined with the optional FUJIFILM EF-W1 Wireless Commander (sold separately).
  • Wirelessly control your creativity – The EF-60 can be optically triggered by the FUJIFILM EF-X500 Shoe Mount Flash (sold separately). When used in combination with the EF-W1 Wireless Commander, (also sold separately), users can control power output in ⅓ increments, group units into 1 of 3 groups, and assign 1 of 8 different channels for up to 30 wireless flashes. This 2.4 GHz remote functionality provides photographers with complete creative control over the lighting being used to create their images, while minimizing the amount of time needed to adjust settings for individual units overall.
  • Extended compatibility with NAS compatible units – Wireless remote functionality for the EF-60 Shoe Mount Flash has also been extended to the Nissin Air10s Remote product, which allows for integration with other NAS compatible flashes (i60A, Di700A, MG Series). This added compatibility allows users to use a variety of NAS products with the FUJIFILM EF-60 Flash, allowing photographers broad access to tools to help them make more creative lighting decisions. *NAS or Nissin Air System is a product of Nissin Japan Ltd.

  • Compatible with Nissin Air System
  • 8 Channels and 4 Groups
  • Flash Sync Speed up to 1/8000 Second
  • Wirelessly control your creativity – When used in combination with the FUJIFILMEF-60 Shoe Mount Flash, users can adjust the flash’s power output in ⅓ increments, group it into 1 of 3 groups, assign it 1 of 8 different channels, and trigger it wirelessly. This 2.4 GHz remote functionality can also be extended to up to thirty EF-60 Shoe Mount Flashes to provide an extensive opportunity to create stunning images.
  • Reliability and consistency at your fingertips – The EF-W1 Wireless Commander uses radio-controlled 2.4 GHz wireless communications to remotely trigger EF-60’s diverse functions, which include TTL mode, Manual mode and FP High-Speed Sync mode.
  • Extended compatibility with Nissin Air System compatible units Wireless remote functionality for the EF-60 Shoe Mount Flash has also been extended to the Nissin Air10s Remote, which allows for integration with other Nissin Air System (NAS)* compatible flashes (i60A, Di700A, MG Series). This added compatibility allows users to use a combination of Nissin products with FUJIFILM EF-60 Flashes, allowing photographers broader access to tools to help them make more creative lighting decisions. *NAS or Nissin Air System is a product of Nissin Japan Ltd.
